AFFCAD Slum Awareness Walk
With its Slum Awareness Walk, Action for Fundamental Change and Development (AFFCAD) offers tourists as well as interested locals a guided tour through the slum of Bwaise, home of approximately 90’000 people. It is an eye-opening opportunity to both see and experience how life is like in one of the biggest and poorest slums in Kampala and at the same time witness the passionate work AFFCAD is doing in the area. The walk has been a great backbone and sustainable way to keep the organization moving forward with helping people who need it the most.
Affcad slum awareness walk
The slum awareness walk has been taking place since 2009, and has proved to be an important part of voluntourism and spreading awareness of life in the slum internationally.
our walk gives visitors an extraordinary insight into another world ,AFFCAD runs the slum awareness walk to do just that raise awareness .we draw attention to the plight of many who are living on or below the poverty line in Kampala’s slums . The slum walk also highlights our work as an organisation , which includes our endeavors to alleviate suffering and improve the education and health of our many local beneficiaries .

AFFCAD was founded in 2009 by a group of four young men in Bwaise, one of Kampala’s poorest slums. Muhammad, Brian, Jaffar, and Richard to transform living conditions in Kampala’s poorest slum areas by empowering the children, youth and young women through education, health, and economic empowerment programs.
Why we do what we do
Uganda is rapidly urbanizing, with many youths coming to Kampala to escape poverty, 85% of these will settle in slums because of the very cheap housing. More than 90,000 people live without basic services such as water, shelter, and sanitation. 65% of the residents are aged between 15 and 25.
In addition to this, slum communities in Kampala have been faced with an influx of refugees from various countries, case in point, Kisenyi slum which is home to many Somalis. These are youth full of dreams and aspirations yet the economy cannot create jobs for them. The reality of the slums they will settle in are characterized by poor temporary housing, poor water, and sanitation, poverty, unemployment, high crime rate, drug abuse among others. Such poor conditions, weak law, and order, grievances and marginalization can fuel conflict and despair-all a fertile ground for recruitment into radical groups.

Kampala markets remain empty as vendors fight to remain on the streets
While Kampala Capital City Authority grapples with the problem of street vendors, a number of markets in the city have empty stalls and lots of space. NTV took its cameras to the markets in Kampala to seek answers to what could be holding the vendors back from occupying the available space, even with reduction of stall fees.
