What To Expect At Muay Thai Class At AKA Thailand
One of the most common questions we get from new students is what can they expect from our Muay Thai classes. Hard training is the obvious answer, but our coaches are all highly experienced, professional and friendly too. They will guide you through our daily program under the leadership of Head Trainer, Kru Lamsongkram Chuwattana, to ensure that you leave each class feeling confidant with what you learned that day and excited to return for the next session.
Every class starts with a 10 minute run around our large matted facility followed by 5 minutes of jumping rope to warm up your calves and increase your heart rate. If you like to run, you can also join our fighters on their road run before class. After every one breaks a sweat our trainers will take you through a dynamic stretch to loosen the body, then lead right into wrapping hands to prepare for the session. Our trainers move from student to student to make sure everyone wraps their hands correctly, and for beginners, they will wrap them for you until you are comfortable doing it yourself.
Following the warm-up, we move into shadow boxing. This is a great time to think about the techniques you learned during previous sessions and run through them to refresh your memory, while also working on fluidity and becoming more confidant in your movements.
Once everyone is geared up with their gloves and shin guards, Kru Lam and our trainers display the techniques you'll be working on during that session, demonstrating in front of the class, then pairing students to practice together. Some of our trainers pair up with students while others monitor to ensure that everyone is using proper technique.
Finally we move into the heart of the program: Muay Thai or (depending on the day) boxing sparring, clinching, pad work and bag work. This is where our program runs like clockwork. The trainers will assign you a station, either on the bag, hitting pads with a trainer, or in the ring to spar or clinch with other students. Our trainers will spar with you in between coaching too. For all partnered activities, you will be paired with a student around your size and skill level and the trainers keep a close eye on everyone to monitor the pace and make corrections and suggestions. Sparring is always optional but highly encouraged!
At the end of class you will be taken through some conditioning exercises: ab work, bodyweight drills and cardio drills like speed punching on the bags. These are all great for improving your cardio and stamina, and lead right into the final cool-down segment of the class. You'll be taken through a final stretch to lower your heart rate and catch your breath, then you can head off to eat, sleep and/or prepare for your next session.
Our trainers speak English and can accommodate all skill and fitness levels. They can also work around injuries and tailor your individual training to make sure you get the most out of each class.
