The Mall in Columbia - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of The Mall in Columbia in Columbia, MD from January 11, 2019. This is a big thriving mall in the suburbs of Baltimore. It is not dead nor hurting in the least, despite just losing Sears. It was developed by The Rouse Company, started by an architect named Jim Rouse, who pretty much came up with the look of the standard mall of the 1970s and 1980s.

Here is some history from Wikipedia:
The Mall in Columbia, also known as the Columbia Mall, is the central shopping mall for the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, United States. It has four anchor department stores and over 200 specialty stores. Restaurants include PF Chang's, Maggiano's Little Italy and Panera Bread. The mall includes a 14-screen AMC Theatres. It is located in the Town Center area of the city and attracts shoppers from surrounding counties in Maryland.
Architect Frank Gehry designed The Rouse Company Columbia exhibit building, and was initially selected to design the neighboring mall centerpiece. Gehry was later rejected by Rouse for lack of experience, and the firm of Cope, Linder, & Walmsley was contracted for the project.
The Mall opened in 1971 with two major anchor stores: Hochschild Kohn's (which was replaced by Hecht's in the mid-1970s) and Woodward & Lothrop (a.k.a. Woodies, which closed in late 1995 and was replaced by JCPenney in July 1996), as well as a McCrory's and Lerner's, which were minor anchors. Of the original 102 stores, those still in operation at the mall as of March 2017 include: Edward Arthur Jeweler, GNC, and Motherhood Maternity. The Mall has undergone several major expansions since its opening, with the Sears wing opening in 1981, along with an expansion of approximately 370,000 square feet and about 55 specialty stores. In 1997, the Hecht's store (now Macy's) added a third level. The Lord & Taylor wing opened in November 1998 (along with two new parking garages); the Nordstrom wing opened in September 1999. Also at this time, 20 to 30 stores opened in a new 60,000-square-foot wing near Hecht's. The interior was renovated by replacing the floors, lighting, skylights and air conditioning units by the end of 1998. A Cheesecake Factory restaurant opened on The Mall property near the movie theaters in late 2005. The Mall's Hecht's store became Macy's on September 9, 2006.
The Mall was sold to General Growth Properties by The Rouse Company in 2004. In early 2013, construction began on an addition to the outdoor Plaza at The Mall in Columbia to replace the L.L. Bean store (which closed in May 2013) with additional stores and restaurants. On April 28, 2015, Howard County Police announced an increased presence at village centers and malls following protests and riots the day before that affected GGP's Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore. In May 2018, a 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2) Main Event Entertainment facility opened on the south side of the mall, featuring 22 bowling lanes and over a hundred virtual reality video games.
On October 15, 2018, it was announced the Sears store would be closing as part of a plan to close 142 stores nationwide as a result of the retailer's filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
On January 25, 2014, at around 11:15 a.m., 19-year-old Darion Marcus Aguilar entered the Zumiez store on the second floor of the mall, armed with a Mossberg 500 12-gauge shotgun with a pistol grip, and fired six to nine shots, killing two employees—21-year-old Brianna Benlolo and 25-year-old Tyler Johnson—and injuring five others before committing suicide. Police arrived within two minutes to find an extensive amount of ammunition and crude explosive devices next to Aguilar's body, which were disabled safely. All of the injured were treated and later discharged from the Howard County General Hospital.
Former Jessup correctional officer Hong Young was arrested on March 2, 2015, on suspicion of shooting at the Columbia AMC theater building and gunfire incidents at the National Security Agency, Arundel Mills Costco, Inter-county Connector and Laurel Walmart.
Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

1950s STORY OF THE U.S. MAIL USPS PROMOTIONAL FILM LETTER SORTING & DELIVERY 64334
This 1950s color film is an educational public service announcement by the U.S. Postal Service. The film was produced by Lewis & Martin Films Inc. The focus of this film is to educate viewers on postal automation technology. The film begins with a vintage post office seal, followed by Arthur Summerfield, the Postmaster General from 1953-1961 under President Eisenhower, who speaks briefly about the mail service (0:42-1:30). Mail is dropped in and picked up from different mailboxes, including in a dual Local and Out of Town mailbox (1:31-1:58). Workers sort mail and boxes (1:59-2:17). New home construction is briefly showcased, including model homes (2:18-2:38). An aerial view shows a large factory and work trucks (2:39-2:54). Vintage illustrations show the U.S. map, as well as an overstuffed post office bursting at the seams and sending mail flying (2:55-3:30). A woman walks into a vintage “Victorian elegant” post office lobby (4:02-4:17). Men push carts and toss packages in a postal processing facility, letters are sorted into city boxes by hand, and packages from a mountain of boxes are tossed into hampers (4:18-5:00). The Transorma Letter Sorting Machine, the first implementation of a semiautomatic mail sorter, is operated by five clerks. Mail is shown being sorted by hand for contrast (5:01-5:43). An automated conveyor belt system is demonstrated, moving mail to different area (5:45-6:38). Boxes are moved down a conveyor belt where a keyboard operator punches in the address area for automatic sorting (6:39-7:14). A postman walks his route and delivers mail. 1950s post office trucks drop off packages (7:15-8:13). A carrier uses an experimental, three-wheeled post office truck (8:14-8:30). A postman pushes a postal cart down the sidewalk, delivering mail (8:31-8:40). The first version of a modern post office layout is shown, including the 24x7 lobby (8:41-9:13). Innovations such as early automated stamp machine, the post office lockbox, and the presence of ballpoint pens are briefly showcased (9:14-9:35). A woman prepares business mail and bundles mail with pressure-sensitive tape, dropping them into a triple-section mailbox (9:36-10:54). An experimental automatic culling machine, an automatic canceling machine, an electronic scanner that reads typed and printed addresses, and a code control machine are demonstrated. Researchers experiment with different mail automation ideas (10:55-13:10). Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield speaks to the camera to conclude the film (13:11-14:33).

The Nightmare World of Gang Stalking
More than 10,000 people worldwide claim they're the victims of a vast organized surveillance effort designed to ruin their lives, a phenomenon known as gang stalking. Mental health experts see gang stalking as a symptom of paranoia, but the self-identified victims who insist what they're experiencing is real have come together online and in support groups to share their stories.
VICE met up with a handful of Americans who claim their lives have been derailed by gang stalking to understand what serious consequences the phenomenon presents. Then we hear from Dr. Josh Bazell, one of many physicians who believes the victims of gang stalking are experiencing dangerous delusions that could be treated by mental health professionals.

This video focuses more on Lowe's, specifically how they've grown, how they've competed with The Home Depot over the years, and their potential to take back that #1 spot.

Movies That Theaters Refused To Show
There are plenty of ways that filmmakers and studios curb the content of their work to appeal to as large an audience as possible. Regardless, there are still some theaters that choose not to show certain films for a variety of reasons, whether they be moral, fiscal, or logistical. Here are a just a few examples of times theaters backed out from showing a film.
Perhaps the most popular of the recent films to be refused by a movie theater is 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. A small theater in Iowa decided not to screen this entry in the Star Wars franchise, but not because its owners objected to the content of the film. Instead, it was because of an issue with Disney's terms. As part of their distribution deal, Disney required theaters to screen The Last Jedi in their largest auditoriums for a minimum of four weeks, and took a cut of 65% of ticket revenue from those screenings.
That's a high price to pay for any small-town movie theater, especially in recent years, when plenty of potential audience members have ditched the big screen for lots of smaller screens that stream entertainment at home. Of course, The Last Jedi still went on to grab an international box office total of more than $1 billion, even without being shown in the Keystone of Northeast Iowa.

DC Department of Parks and Recreation's Tennis Program, USTA Member Org of the Year, 2015
United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced it presented the DC Department of Parks and Recreation with the USTA Organization Member of the Year Award. The award is given annually to an organization that provides outstanding service to its members and to the local community. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) was honored at the USTA Annual Meeting and Conference on April 11, 2015, at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton, Florida.
Jeri has enhanced our tennis infrastructure with the implementation of 36’ courts, 60’ court blended lines and over 130 well maintained tennis courts located throughout 40 sites. Pictured from left to right are Jennifer Green – Director of Athletics, Jeri Ingram – Director of Tennis, Malcolm Greene – Head Tennis Coach and John Stokes – Chief of Staff.
DPR’s tennis department offers programmatic and competitive opportunities for youth and adults regardless of their age, skill level or economic status through instructional programs, play days, tournaments, competitive leagues and social tennis events. DPR’s tennis division is responsible for the oversight of more than 140 tennis courts throughout the District of Columbia as well as a multitude of citywide tennis programs, tennis trainings and tennis events annually on local, regional and national levels.
DPR’s tennis program offers classes for adults (19 & over), juniors (7-18) and Tiny Tots (3-6) at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. It also offers a summer tennis camp and tennis enhancements within the various summer camps at 40 additional locations.
Programming is available in all eight wards of the city for juniors and adults. Ninety percent of the programs are free to individuals. In addition, DPR hosts 14 after-school tennis programs annually, 10 after-summer camp programs seasonally, all-day tennis summer camps, 40 tennis enhancement summer programs, special needs tennis programs and senior tennis programs. In 2014, more than 1,000 kids were exposed to tennis through DPR summer camps and programming. Kids in the summer programming regularly receive free breakfast and lunch.
In 2014, DPR started the “Tennis Under the Lights” program to bring the community together through tennis. The free tennis socials were held every Tuesday and Thursday during the summer for adults and juniors. “Tennis Under the Lights” featured match play, drills run by DPR staff, music and a pot luck. Around 70 people attend each social, and the program was so successful it will be continued through the fall.
“The DC Department of Parks and Recreation epitomizes ‘tennis for everyone’ as it offers ample play opportunities for players of all ages and abilities,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “It’s a model organization that showcases community engagement through grass-roots programming.”
The USTA Annual Meeting and Conference brings together USTA leadership, national staff, national committee members and section volunteers and staff in pursuit of the USTA mission: to promote and develop the growth of tennis. Along with leadership and committee meetings, the AMC provides educational opportunities for all attendees to develop and enhance their personal and professional skills and learn new ways to promote the game.
