2015 Annual Archives lecture: Whither business history? Memory, message and meaning
The past 25 years has seen marked shifts in both the demand for and supply of business history. What are the consequences for specialist archives such as the Noel Butlin Archives Centre? On a positive note, the demand for information about business is very high. However, the demand from the current audience of investors, analysts, regulators and those looking for salacious gossip want up to the minute information rather than whole of life histories.
Firms are increasingly reluctant to commission such works about themselves or to donate confidential materials to archives which raise issues for a repository with an ageing collection. The response of firms to globalisation has had profound implications for the ways in which they operate. Firms have broadened their geographic scope, combined their activities with foreign partners in global supply chains, undertake R&D, use new technologies and marketing techniques.
The changing nature of business practice provides new challenges for authors who now require a wider set of skills to write their histories. Business school academics have the requisite set of technical skills but most are poor historians. Moreover, their employers actively discourage them from writing monographs. Can business history and the archives that support it overcome these challenges? The starting place is to convince business that scholarly business history is in its interest.
