Το project Interviewing Dog World

Hero Rats at Apopo Visitor Center
Hero Rate (វិរបុរសកណ្តុរកម្ពុជា) are rats who have the ability to save the land around the world by removing the mine from the lands. The story of APOPO began when Bart Weetjens, founder of the organization wondered if the rodents he used to keep as pets could be taught to find landmines and other explosives.

Hero rat who detects land mines in Cambodia
APOPO Cambodia - Landmine detecting HeroRATs
Cambodia is still one of the most landmine-affected countries in the world. At least 26 million explosive sub-munitions were dropped on Cambodia during the Vietnam War, mostly in eastern and north-eastern areas bordering the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam. The bombing is estimated to have left between 1.9 million and 5.8 million cluster munitions remnants.
HeroRAT Demonstration - Siem Reap, Cambodia
Demonstration of a Gambian pouched rat trained to detect land mines in Siem Reap, Cambodia. APOPO, a Belgian NGO, trains these large rodents to sniff out land mines in former war zones in Cambodia, Angola, and Mozambique. Their acute sense of smell combined with their small size - too small to trigger the mines - means they can work much more efficiently than dogs or humans, clearing in half an hour what takes a human 4 days to sweep. They have also been used to detect tuberculosis in Tanzania, Mozambique, and Ethiopia; in 20 minutes, they can check as many samples as human technicians can process in four days. Their nickname - herorats - says it all.
Hero rats finding land mins in Cambodia left over from the Vietnam war.
Siem Reap - vom Denguefieber erfasst.

APOPO - Giving Tuesday - Clearing Landmines in Cambodia
Right now, we’re making a big push to clear Cambodia of as many landmines as possible. To date APOPO has returned over 15 million m2 of safe land back to local communities so that people can get their lives back on track. APOPO raised $75,000 in matching funds for Giving Tuesday and any support you can give us would be a huge help.

Cambodian Landmine Museum - Things to do in Siem Reap
The Cambodian Landmine Museum is a must-see place to visit when you come to Siem Reap, Cambodia. There are many things to do in Siem Reap, but if you want to learn about an organisation who is really helping Cambodians to escape their tragic past, then you must stop at the Landmine Museum.
The museum strives to educate their visitors about the importance of clearing mines. There are millions still in the ground and these mines continue to destroy families and communities.
The museum tells the story of Aki Ra who started clearing up landmines on his own.
Moreover, the museum also educates and supports more than two dozen Khmer children at their relief center (not open to the public) where they live on the property.
All proceeds go to running the relief centre and clearing up landmines.

Aki Ra - the Real Hero of Cambodia | Bousra
Aki Ra (sometimes written Akira) is a former Khmer Rouge conscripted child soldier who works as a deminer and museum curator in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He has devoted his life to removing landmines in Cambodia and to caring for young landmine victims. Aki Ra states that since 1992 he has personally removed and destroyed as many as 50,000 landmines, and is the founder of the Cambodian Landmine Museum.
Early life
Aki Ra is unsure of his age, but believes he was born in 1970 or 1973. His parents were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Orphaned in a Khmer Rouge camp, he was taken in by a woman named Yourn who raised him and several other orphaned children. Like many others, he soon became a child soldier once his strength became sufficient to make him useful to local Khmer Rouge military commanders. When the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia with the intention of toppling the Khmer Rouge political regime, he was taken into the custody of Vietnamese soldiers.Later he enlisted with the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Armed Forces formed by the new government, the People's Republic of Kampuchea. His duties included placing landmines along the mined area on Cambodia's border with Thailand. The name Aki Ra was given to him by a Japanese acquaintance and is not his birth name. He was born Eoun Yeak, but one of his supervisors once compared his efficiency to AKIRA, a heavy-duty appliance company in Japan.
