This is one of the most impressive entrances to an art museum that I have ever seen. It was very cool and comfortable in the Arizona desert.
Letting the light in: James Turrell, ASU partner on artwork | Arizona State University
One of the most important large-scale artworks in the world sits in the desert of northern Arizona, where artist James Turrell has spent decades shaping the landscape into an immersive observatory. His creation, Roden Crater, is a masterwork of light and perception inside a dormant volcano, now only seen by a few hundred people every year. A new and innovative partnership between Turrell and Arizona State University will help complete the artist’s magnum opus on the edge of the Painted Desert, making it accessible to many more people and developing an academic component for Turrell to share his artistic vision and inspire transdisciplinary approaches to creativity.

Living in Metro Phoenix | Arizona State University
As an Arizona State University student, you’ll never run out of things to do in Phoenix, the fifth-largest city in the nation. Phoenix ranks as a top 10 places to live for new graduates, and the busy social scene and affordable lifestyle attracts students from all over the country.
With nearly 300 days of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 75 degrees, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities in the fall, winter and spring months. Choose from 60+ hiking trails to explore in the Valley of the Sun such as South Mountain Park or Camelback Mountain. If you’re looking to stay cool, try paddle boarding at Tempe Town Lake or head out to one of the big lakes on the outskirts of town. We don't get snow here in the valley, but just a short drive will get you to colder temperatures. Arizona truly is a unique place!
Phoenix has plenty to offer the creative types, with its murals, galleries, museums and First Friday Art Walk. You can taste world class cuisine, too. Downtown Phoenix, Old Town Scottsdale and Tempe’s Mill Avenue offer some of the most notable restaurants. Places like Pizzeria Bianco, named the best pizza in the nation. (Take that Chicago and New York!) Or Los Olivos, an outstanding Mexican restaurant that’s been around for decades.
Experience any of the big-time pro sports. The Arizona Cardinals, the Phoenix Suns, the Phoenix Mercury, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Coyotes all call this place home. We definitely recommend watching ASU’s 25 Pac-12 teams (all ASU games are free for students, by the way).

Redefining Indigenous Perspectives Through Art and Dialogue with Bob Haozous
The ASU Library Channel presents the ninth installment of The Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture, and Community with Redefining Indigenous Perspectives Through Art and Dialogue. Sculptor Bob Haozous discusses his life and art.
Bob Haozous is one of the most important Native sculptors of the Native American Fine Art Movement. His innovation and experimentation with materials push the boundaries of Indian art -- the boundaries that his father, Allan Houser, helped to define. He is best known for his monumental cut steel pieces which often deal with poignant topical issues. He approaches these issues with a bit of a bite and a good dose of humor. His injection of humor allows the serious issues to be more palatable and to have a universal presence.
Haozous has chosen to take back his Apache family name to reject the Anglo version -- Houser. This name was given to his father as a child in an Oklahoma Indian boarding school. Together Haozous and Houser represent the breadth and depth of Native American sculpture. Haozous has been able to establish himself as a leading artist because of his father's encouragement and nurturing. As well, Haozous has encouraged and supported his father's work.
