Reasons Why You Should Take A Tour Of The ATM Cave in Belize
Caverns and skeletons and mysteries, Oh, My! Experience an underworld you must see to believe.
Unless you’re an archaeology buff with a vested interest in Central American societies like the ancient Maya, you’ve probably never heard the name Dr. Jaime Awe. This homegrown archaeologist has become something of a legend in his homeland Belize, having been the first to seriously explore the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave in 1993.
Dr. Awe’s initial work so pleased the Belize government and authorities on primitive Mesoamerican societies, he was granted permission to helm the Western Belize Regional Cave Project between the years of 1993 and 2000. Today’s visitor can thank this archaeologist for the ground-breaking exploratory efforts he undertook at a sacred site that remains “a work in progress” to this day.

BELIZE & GUATEMALA: AMAZING TIKAL and ATM CAVE (MAYAN HISTORY) - REISVLOG #24
Crossing the border from Mexico to Belize went oh so smooth. After a 4 hour busdrive from Bacalar we arrived in Belize City. We were overwhelmed by our first impressions of this country.
Not at all what we expected. This is what we love about travel. Countries and people will always surprise you in a positive way.
From Belize City we went directly to San Ignacio were we visited the Mayan ATM cave and the Xunantunich temple. After that it was already time to leave Belize and travel into Guatemala.
Think the boarder-crossing Mexico Belize was easy? try the crossing between Belize and Guatemala. Never seen something like it.
In Guatemala we arrived in Flores after a 2 hour ride in a Collectivo (a shared mini van stuffed with locals, tourists, onions and potatoes).
There is a lot to see in and around Flores but the main attraction has to be the Mayan Ruins of Tikal. A beautiful sight in which we have wandered for hours and hours. The History of Tikal is just as incredible as its ruins.
Enough of the talking. Let's watch the video and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and LIKE the VIDEO

Crystal Maiden (human sacrifice) - ATM Cave - Belize - January 2011
Visiting ATM Cave in Belize
A trip to ATM (Actun Tunichil Muknal) cave, in Interior Belize, back in January. It was an interesting trip.
Adding to the drama, the river crossing required to get to the cave was at near flood stage, and was closed the day after this trip, so there is probably as much footage of those crossings as the cave. My GoPro camera doesn't like the low light very much, so interior footage is somewhat limited.
