The Tiny House in Downtown Asheville, North Carolina | Small House Design
Since our last three featured homes were all tiny houses that cater to single-level living, we decided it was time for something different. Today’s home is also tiny, but this one is a three-storey tall and skinny house with the kitchen, living room and bedroom each occupying one of the three floors.
The tiny house has just 401 ft2 (37.3 m2) spread over the three storeys. We estimate the outside dimensions as roughly 10’ wide by 15’ long. With three tiny floors, stairs and other circulation space eat up a very large portion of the floor area. Normally with so little floor space, it would hardly be worth having even two storeys. Besides the space they take up, stairs are fairly expensive to build. However this tiny house is an expansion of a garage that likely dates back to 1920, when the adjacent house was built. Our guess is that the owners were allowed to build upwards but were not allowed to expand outside the original garage footprint.
You enter the home at the middle level, where the living room and bathroom are. Calling it a living “room” is actually a bit of a stretch, as there isn’t room for much more than a pair of upholstered chairs and a small table. Those sit along the right wall, next to a grouping of three windows, while the bathroom is along the left side of the house. The bathroom is so tiny that there is space for only the toilet and shower. The sink vanity had to be placed outside the bathroom, in a nook by the front door. The front door does swing out, saving a bit of space inside and keeping it from hitting your backside as you brush your teeth.
A circulation corridor leads from the front door to the back of the house, where stairs lead up to the bedroom and down to the kitchen. Notice that the stair down is a steep spiral staircase while the one going up is a regular staircase. People often suggest the use of a spiral stair to save space, but be aware that most building codes do not allow them to be used as a fire escape. It was likely allowed here because the kitchen and living room both have direct access to the outside, so occupants can escape the house without using the stairs. That is not true of the top-level bedroom, so a regular stair was required there.
The bedroom is certainly snug but it does at least provide enough room for the required furniture and clothes storage. There is even a washer and dryer hidden away in a curtained alcove.
Down on the ground floor, the kitchen is compact but complete with the usual appliances. There is also a small dining space, next to a pair of swing-out double doors that replaced the original garage door.
We found this tiny house on Airbnb. It is just a block from downtown Asheville, North Carolina, so keep it in mind if you plan to attend the Tiny House Conference being held there in early April.

North Carolina: Biltmore Estate
Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet (16,622.8 m2) of floor space (135,280 square feet of living area). Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions.
In the 1880s, at the height of the Gilded Age, George Washington Vanderbilt II began to make regular visits with his mother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt, to the Asheville area. He loved the scenery and climate so much that he decided to build his own summer house in the area, which he called his little mountain escape. His older brothers and sisters had built luxurious summer houses in places such as Newport, Rhode Island, and Hyde Park, New York. Vanderbilt named his estate Biltmore, derived from De Bilt, Vanderbilt's ancestors' place of origin in the Netherlands, and More, Anglo-Saxon for open, rolling land. Vanderbilt bought almost 700 parcels of land, including over 50 farms and at least five cemeteries; a portion of the estate was once the community of Shiloh. A spokesperson for the estate said in 2017 that archives show much of the land was in very poor condition, and many of the farmers and other landowners were glad to sell.
Construction of the house began in 1889. George Vanderbilt opened his opulent estate on Christmas Eve of 1895.
In an attempt to bolster the estate's financial situation during the Great Depression, Cornelia and her husband opened Biltmore to the public in March 1930 at the request of the City of Asheville, which hoped the attraction would revitalize the area with tourism.
After the divorce of the Cecils in 1934, Cornelia left the estate never to return; however, John Cecil maintained his residence in the Bachelors' Wing until his death in 1954. Their eldest son, George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil, occupied rooms in the wing until 1956. At that point Biltmore House ceased to be a family residence and continued to be operated as a historic house museum.
The Biltmore Company is privately held. Of the 4,306.86 acres that make up Biltmore Estate.
Vanderbilt commissioned prominent New York architect Richard Morris Hunt, who had previously designed houses for various Vanderbilt family members, to design the house in the Châteauesque style. Hunt used French Renaissance chateaus as inspiration.
The Banquet Hall is the largest room in the house, measuring 42 feet wide and 72 feet long, with a 70-foot-high barrel-vaulted ceiling. The table could seat 64 guests surrounded by rare Flemish tapestries and a triple fireplace that spans one end of the hall. On the opposite end of the hall is an organ gallery that houses a 1916 Skinner pipe organ. Left unfinished with bare brick walls, the Music Room was not completed and opened to the public until 1976. It showcases a mantle designed by Hunt, and a large engraving by Albrecht Dürer called the Triumphal Arch commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The mantle had been stored in the stable for over 80 years.
The basement level featured activity rooms including an indoor 70,000-gallon (265,000-litre and 265-cubic meter) heated swimming pool with underwater lighting, a bowling alley, and a gymnasium with once state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The service hub of the house is also found in the largest basement in the US, as the location for the main kitchen, pastry kitchen, rotisserie kitchen, walk-in refrigerators that provided an early form of mechanical refrigeration, the servants' dining hall, laundry rooms and additional bedrooms for staff.
There is an Italian formal garden, a walled garden, a shrub and rose garden, fountains, and a conservatory with individual rooms for palms and orchids. There was also a bowling green, an outdoor tea room, and a terrace to incorporate the European statuary that Vanderbilt had brought back from his travels. At the opposite end of the Esplanade is the Rampe Douce, a graduated stairway zigzagging along a rough-cut limestone wall that leads to the grassy slope known as the Vista, topped with a statue of Diana, the goddess of the hunt.

Ice storm leaves North Carolina drivers stranded
Freezing rain and ice brought traffic to a halt in Raleigh, N.C., as workers waited too late to escape downtown before the storm made roads impassable. Gov. Pat McCrory has asked citizens to stay off the roads, and the state is sending out rescue vehicles to help drivers stranded by the storm. Wyatt Andrews reports.
