[4K] GHENT, BELGIUM WALKING TOUR - Historic Centre
How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
A walk through it's historic centre has to one of the top 10 things to do in Ghent Belgium. In this beautiful Ghent city walking tour, we start at the open air market by Sint Jacobskerk.
We see the wide Friday Market Square (Vrijdagmarkt) before heading up Serpentstraat with it's quirky independent shops and bars. We loop through the colourful Graffiti street (Werregarenstraat) and follow Schepenhuisstraat to see the Town Hall (Stadhuis Gent) appear before us.
A right at Botermarkt leads us to Het Belfort van Gent (the 14th century belfry and watchtower,) and Sint-Baafsplein - from where we see the magnificent entrance to Saint Bavo's Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal.)
Passing Sint Niklaaskerk, we arrive at the famous view over the River Leie on Sint Michiel bridge with Sint Michielskerk itself, perched on our left.
We meander through restaurant lined streets to Grasbrug - another bridge famed for it's views over the river, busy with boats and pleasure cruisers. We pass along to Kraanlei where we walk along the banks of the Leie to the vibrant cafes and restaurants of Oudburg.

BELGIUM: EXPLORING the medieval city of GHENT, what to see, top attractions
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the very historic (and very beautiful) city of Ghent which is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province and after Antwerp the largest municipality of Belgium. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It is a port and university city.
We are going to visit the most important sites in the centre of Ghent; I will show you where to go if you only have a few hours to spend in this beautiful city.
Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO. The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guildhalls at Grand-Place and elegant art-nouveau buildings.

BELGIUM, EXPLORING the famous GRAFFITI STREET ????, the historic city of GHENT (GENT)
Subscribe here: - Let's visit the famous graffiti alleyway in the historic city of Ghent, in Belgium.
It’s not something you expect to find in Ghent, especially when the rest of the city is so traditional, there’s castles, cathedrals, churches and all the usual stuff in between. What’s certainly not usual is the alleyway linking Hoogpoort and Onderstraat also known as Werregarenstraat.
Although graffiti is supposedly banned in Ghent there seem to be a few places where the authorities turn a blind eye and this is obviously one of them. Despite it’s central location the graffiti has been allowed to stay, presumably because it’s proving to be such a popular attraction with tourists.

Ghent's Political & Media Obstacles to Implementing the Traffic Circulation Plan
SUPPLEMENTAL CONTENT!
We had to cut out so much from our Ghent Streetfilm on The Circulation Plan and how wonderful it was for the country. We probably could have released a 30 minute version!!
But we had to take out over half of the section on the political obstacles and negative media sensationalism that led up to (and during) the first days. So this was important to retain more of this story in an additional release for those curious. After all, we all know the usual story that occurs when a city, state or country tries to implement an innovative transportation scheme: there are often community scare tactics, the opposing political party tries to take advantage or not support it and - usually standard - the media tries to drum up controversy and say the plans will not work and cause difficulty.
Thus it is a valuable tool to make this expanded story from Ghent as you will hear about some of these (including death threats to the Vice Mayor Filip Watteeuw and even Dutch planners, yes the Dutch(!) saying the plans were political suicide.
But as we know in most cases well-thought plans do work and the public ends up liking it more than the media ever assumes.

EATING Our Way Through GHENT. (Canadians Try Belgian Food)
We had so much fun in Ghent. What an amazing city. If you're looking for things to do in Ghent look no further. We try the best Belgian Food from fries, to waffles to delicious beer. Come explore the city with us.
In this vlog, we spent the day exploring Guent, a city full of history, culture, great food, and of course, Beer. The old city of Ghent (in Flemish Gent; in French Gand) is a picturesque muddle of alleyways rimmed by quaint steeple-roofed buildings running along pretty canals. Along with Bruges, Ghent is Belgium's star architectural attraction, but unlike Bruges, it comes without the tour bus hordes. A walk through town on a summer's evening, when most of the important buildings are illuminated, is an unforgettable experience, as is a canal boat ride down the many branches of the Scheldt and Leie Canals that intersect the city. For history-lovers and architecture fans, Ghent can't be beaten, plus its lack of tourists makes it a great place to get to grips with modern local Flemish culture.

Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor.
One of the great things about this city (the third most populous in Belgium, with 250,000 inhabitants) is that it’s managing to reinvent itself at the edges. Parts of the city centre are now awash with rib joints and places offering the waterzooi chicken soup – the famous local speciality that nobody actually makes at home – but young people are starting up new bars and clubs in outer neighbourhoods such as Sint-Amandsberg, Gentbrugge and Muide.
Mostly known for its key role in European Union administration, the small nation of Belgium might leave you surprised by its rich and gorgeous heritage. It boasts a number of fascinatingly historic cities packed with medieval and Art Nouveau architecture and famous for their long traditions in arts, fashion and fine dining. If you've seen the best of them, the Belgian countryside offers anything from sandy beaches to the densely forested hills and ridges of the Ardennes.
