Kumamoto City, situated roughly in the center of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the government and economic center of the prefecture. It has a population of over 730,000 and holds the largest-scale shopping arcade in western Japan. With a length of over 1 kilometer, the arcade is located at the foot of Kumamoto Castle in the city center. In the shopping arcade, there is a wide variety of shops, such as department stores, electronic shops, drugstores, and boutiques. There are also a variety of restaurants and bars where tourists can enjoy local delicacies.
The area is also rich in history, with sites such as Kumamoto Castle, built over 400 years ago and considered one of the three most magnificent castles in Japan. On top of everything else, Kumamoto is blessed with abundant hot springs.
As you can see, Kumamoto is filled with invaluable historical heritage, unique culture, magnificent nature, and refreshing hot springs, as well as outstanding food.
The city is only a 40min Shinkansen Bullet Train ride away from Fukuoka and you can spend there the whole day experiencing various things.

Kumamoto Station (熊本駅 Kumamoto-eki) is the main railway terminal of the city of Kumamoto, Japan. It is located in Nishi-ku, Kumamoto, and is operated by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu).
In front of the station is a tram stop of the tram operated by Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau named Kumamoto-Ekimae Station.
The Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau (熊本市交通局 Kumamoto-shi Kōtsūkyoku) is a public transportation authority of Kumamoto City, Japan. The bureau operates 2 tram lines within the city. The fare is a flat 170 yen for adults, 90 yen for children, payable by cash or public transit card (including Nimoca, ICOCA, Suica, and Pasmo). Bus lines in the city were formerly operated by the agency, but have since been privatized.
The city government has operated tram lines since 1924 and bus lines since 1927, but the current transportation bureau was formed in 1944.
Kumamoto (熊本市 Kumamoto-shi) is the capital city of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan.
As of April 1, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 737,812[3] and a population density of 1,900 persons per km2. The total area is 389.53 km2.
Greater Kumamoto (熊本都市圏) had a population of 1,461,000, as of the 2000 census. As of 2010, Kumamoto Metropolitan Employment Area has a GDP of US$39.8 billion. It is not considered part of the Fukuoka–Kitakyushu metropolitan area, despite their shared border. The city was designated on April 1, 2012 by government ordinance.

Nozomi のぞみ is the fastest train service running on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen lines in Japan. The service stops at only the largest stations, and along the stretch between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, Nozomi services using N700 series equipment reach speeds of 300 km/h.

Kumamoto, Japan - Go! Waku Waku Trip with Mickey Shinkansen at Kumamoto Station (2019)
Mickey Mouse is popular the world over and JR have taken note with the revealing of a new themed series 800 bullet train service inspired by the Disney mascot. The new Go! Waku Waku Trip with Mickey is a Mickey Mouse Shinkansen bullet train experience which is coming to JR this spring from May 17th and is sure to be a big hit with mouse fans.
As part of Mickey’s 90th-anniversary celebrations, Disney and JR have teamed up to create a specially decorated 6 carriage Shinkansen train which will run on the Island of Kyushu between May and November (although the end date may change). This new service will carry on the tradition of previous JR campaigns featuring beloved animation characters like the Hello Kitty Shinkansen and Pikachu train.
This new seasonal service will be fully available to Japan Rail Pass holders and offers a fantastic way to enjoy the sights of Kyushu in style.

Japan Rail Shinkansen Trains - Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
This video shows the JR Rail N700 and 500 Series high-speed trains that run between Fukuoka and Tokyo.
The N700 series consists of either 8 or 16 car sets and has a maximum speed of 186 mph. The N700 is shown in the flybys and is the sleek, white train, with the blue stripe. This is the newest and most advanced train.
The 500 series is the white train with the gray and blue stripes and the very streamlined nose. This is the older, less-advanced model and has a maximum speed of 186 mph. It consists of either 8 or 16 car sets.
Both the 500 and N700 series are built by Hitachi and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
