Should you visit SOKCHO? South Korea + Abai Village & Sokcho Beach (WeWillNomad)
Sokcho is probably best known for the Seoraksan National Park, and although many people visit the park directly from Seoul, we can recommend spending a few days in Sokcho while visiting the park if your time allows. For more on Seoraksan National Park, read about our visit on wewillnomad.com or see the video at
Sokcho itself is a laid back town, with a lovely long stretch of beach and short coastal walkway linking the beach to the fishing ports
The small island that is home to Abai Village is in walking distance from most of Sokcho. You can reach the village either from the South via the Pink Seorakdaegyo Bridge (pedestrian access only), from the North via the Blue Geumgangdaegyo Bridge (pedestrian access only) or most traditionally via the hand drawn Gaetbae raft boat from downtown Sokcho. Abai Village was formed in 1950 when a group of around 6000 refugees from North Korea moved south and set up shelters on this sandbar in Sokcho. The name
Abai comes from the Refugee's local dialect and means Uncle or Aged Person and refers to the large percentage of the refugees who were of elderly age. Although the inhabitants of the island are much more diverse today, the nickname has stuck. Today, much of the island's tourism can also be attributed to the filming of a local Korean Drama Series which took place here in 2000. There is a small fee to ride the Gaetbae boat and you will be expected to take turns in assisting to pull the hand-drawn raft across the waterway. This is good fun and worth the small fee just for the novelty aspect!
Once in the village, we would say that you should prepare to be underwhelmed by the village itself. There is one alley lined with restaurants all trying to sell you the local speciality dish of Abai Sundae and if it is not yet peak season, then the area can feel rather abandoned. Abai Sundae is a squid stuffed with a mixture of clear noodles, tofu, vegetables, and squid. We chose to meander through and around the village for a bit and enjoy the small and peaceful beach on the East shore of the island. Be sure to climb to the top of the Pink Bridge (or take the elevator) to get an aerial view over the Village before leaving.
Sokcho beach is probably not the most beautiful beach you will visit, but it is a nice clean 1.2 km long stretch of sandy beach with soft lapping waves. You will also find a few photo art pieces that seem to change annually and in the summer there are water activities a plenty. At the South end of the beach, the Bada Hyang-giro Trail leads around the cliff point to the Oeongchihang Port. This short 850 m walkway is very scenic and we best enjoyed it just before sunset. And of course, Sokcho Beach is a great place to enjoy the sunrise!

Stuffed Squid (Squid Sundae) at Abai Village in Sokcho, Korea [Gangwondo w/ Michin Alex]
Check out Abai Village in Sokcho, Gangwondo Province, Korea!
The Abai Sundae (Abai Korean blood sausage) and the Squid (오징어) Sundae are both incredibly tasty, and the women who work the restaurants are so nice! After you're done, stop by the seaside and walk along the mural-filled alleys of the village.
Oh, and don't for get to go to the food area by taking that rope boat ;)
It's a small village by the seaside with a lot of character and tradition that is quite unique, especially considering that many of the people who lived there were North Koreans who were not able to return because of the 38th parallel drawn after the war.

[4 Angles] Abai Village in Sokcho
Abai Village in Sokcho 실향민들의 두 번째 고향, 속초 아바이마을
An estimated 1.23 million North Koreans fled to the South during the Korean War. With memories of the hometowns in their hearts, they rebuilt their lives here in the South at Abai Village, the only settlement of North Korean emigrants in the South. After some 70 years, the village is now known nationwide for offering an authentic taste of North Korea with many signature delicacies like abai sundae (blood sausage) and gajami sikhae (spicy fermented sole). From a village of yearning and pain, it is now becoming a symbol of the desire for reunification. Visit the town and learn more about life in this enclave.

???? About Sokcho-si (속초시)
Sokcho(Korean pronunciation: [sok̚.tɕʰo]) is an ideal location for vacationing, where Koreans flock to immediately as summer approaches. The destination is located on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula and occupies a large portion of Gangwon-do, where people come to enjoy sunbathing on long golden beaches as they gaze over the East Sea’s horizon.
Besides relaxing in the shade of the many pine trees, Sokcho is also famous for its food. Before heading out for water sports, make sure to fill yourself up with some various delectable seafood morsels you can only find at Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. Various delights found at dozens of food stalls, carts, and street vendors are addictively delicious and will cause you to come back for more.
° Places to visit in Sokcho-si (속초 가볼만한 곳)
╰ Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market (속초 관광 수산시장)
Sockho’s traditional market is full of things to see, buy, and eat. Formed in 1953 as the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, it was included on the Korea Tourism Organization’s list of “Best Traditional Markets for Foreign Tourists” last year. From fresh fishes caught off the coast in the Donghae Sea (East Sea) to dried fish and various vegetables, you can find fun in just looking around and watching the fishmongers bargaining with local market-goers. The best part is that it allows you to really taste and experience the true folk atmosphere of Korea.
╰ Seoraksan National Park (설악산 국립공원)
The area of Sokcho includes what is considered to be the most beautiful mountain in Korea, Seoraksan Mountain. Its natural sights are so beautiful that the mountain was designated a natural monument preservation area in 1965. Although the slopes are very steep, many professional and amateur climbers come to test their ability throughout all the seasons.
╰ Seorak Waterpia (설악 워터피아)
Seorak Waterpia is one of Korea's largest theme parks, offering a wide variety of outdoor leisure activities and hot spring facilities. Facilities at this waterpark include a spa, a wave pool, a stream pool where you can follow the current of the water, as well as exciting waterslides.
But what makes Seorak Waterpia special is the fact that they only use pure mineral water originating from Cheoksan Mountain, and is maintained at a temperature of 49℃.

2010년 8월23일 오후. 속초시외버스터미널에서 10분남짓 걸리는 선착장에서 갯배를 타고 도착한 함경도 피난민촌 아바이마을 풍경. A village in Socho City, South Korea, where refugees from Hamgyung-do province during the Korean War had settled down expecting to return home as soon as possible when the reunification comes. Abai means daddy in Hamgyung-do dialect.

ENDLESS LOVE: AUTUMN IN MY HEART | BEAUTIFUL ABAI VILLAGE
You’re not a legit Korean drama fan if you haven’t watched “Endless Love: Autumn In My Heart.” Haha. And guess what, I just visited this famous drama’s filming site: the beautiful Abai Village! This is where the character of Song Hye Kyo died in the drama. The village is soooo beautiful and clean! Visiting Abai Village was one of my most favorite memories of South Korea. I love the clean port, the beautiful beach, and the delicious food. We had Ojingo Sundae (stuffed squid), Abai Sundae (North Korean-style sausage), and Abai Sundaeguk (blood sausage soup). Thank you Brayne and Hubby for letting me tag along with you guys!
Sokcho is famous for its beautiful beaches, mountains, seafood, and North Korean-style food. It’s also a well-known fishing hub (the primary reason why we went there) but for a Korean drama fan like me, I was more thrilled to know that this beautiful city is one of the filming sites of the hit Korean dramas “Endless Love: Autumn In My Heart,” and “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.”
My Awesome Hiking Weekend Trip in Sokcho, South Korea | heyytheredalila
Hi guys!! Sorry for not posting in literally a month, but school has been stressful lately D: But on the brightside, here's a new vlog (yayy!!, lol) So my cool Aussie friends and I went to Sokcho and I literally had THE BEST TIME EVER! I had never hiked before, because I tend to avoid anything exercise related and also there's like no mountains in Texas, but even though I was like almost dying, I actually ended up loving to hike. If you're an outdoors type of person who loves hiking and beautiful beaches, I highly recommend visiting Sokcho when you're in Korea... plus it's not that far from Seoul (probably like an hour and a half in bus), and the bus tickets are super cheap, lol Also, I actually had a mini incident (I had a nosebleed... you see!!! It's a sign to not exercise, lol) while hiking, but even though it happened, I still had the best time everrrrr! xD
But yeah, thanks so much for watching!!! and I'm officially back to my usual weekly uploads, lol
