Exploring an Abandoned Soviet base in Latvia - Skrunda-1
Skrunda-1 was a base housing over 5000 people - families, scientists and soldiers to protect a 19 story radar station. It existed from the 1960s to the late 1990s, when the last Russians left. Once the radar station (used to detect missiles from the west) was blown up, the base was left to rot in the woods.

Skrunda is best known as the town nearest the former Soviet secret city, Skrunda-1, which housed two major radar installations during the Cold War period. Skrunda-1 is currently a ghost town, as the last remaining residents abandoned the town in 1998. The Soviet Union, when building secret installations, usually left the name of the settlement off the map and referred to them literally by the name of the nearest town, plus a number (usually a 1).

Footage of Soviet ghost town in Latvia
Known as the Soviet ghost town, Skrunda-1 in Latvia opened up to visitors recently.
Once a closed city home to 5,000 Soviet soldiers, technicians and their families, Skrunda-1 is now an empty town being destroyed by nature after it was abandoned in 1998.
Skrunda was one of the Soviet-era 'closed administrative territorial entities' or ZATO (Russian acronym) which were established during the Cold War to support sensitive military bases and research sites.
Brutalist apartment still tower over the ghost city while murals and instructional posters still adorn the gym.
These closed cities - more than a hundred according to estimates - were separated from the rest of the general population, surrounded by barbed wire and heavily guarded.

Roadtrip: Latvian Ghost Town 'Skrunda-1'
While driving through Latvia we made a stop in an abandoned town called 'Skrunda-1'. Constructed in the sixties, it was a sight for radio- and military-installations owned by the Soviet Union. However, after the radio-installations have been demolished in 1995 and 1998, the Russian troops and families vacated the area and it has been a ghost town ever since.

The Latvian Ministry of Defence has just started using a former secret Soviet town for urban contact training. Skrunda-1 used to be home to 5,000 Russians from the scientific and military community.
The site housed a radar building which was demolished once Latvia gained independence following the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Abandoned Military Base - Skrunda-1
Skrunda-1, also known as Skrunda-2, is a ghost town and former Soviet radar station located 5 km (3 mi) to the north of Skrunda, in Raņķi parish, Latvia. It was the site of two Dnepr radar (NATO Hen House) radar installations constructed in the 1960s. A Daryal radar was being built there before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Skrunda was strategically important to the Soviet Union as its radars covered Western Europe. The two barn-like radars were one of the most important Soviet early warning radar stations for listening to objects in space and for tracking possible incoming ICBMs.
