Ryuhyo - Japanese Drift Ice in the Sea of Okhotsk Abirishi, Hokkaido
Ryuhyo is drift ice that appears along the northern coast of Hokkaido (in northern Japan) in the Sea of Okhotsk from about late January to early April. Visitors can take hour-long cruises on ice-breaking ships from northern coastal towns like Abashiri. Drift ice is important to the region's ecosystem because it helps plankton grow which are the base of the food chain for the region. Unfortunately in recent years Global Warming has reduced the amount of drift ice.
This footage is from about 2 years ago that I just now got around to editing. I was in Hokkaido for the Yuki Matsuri/Snow Festival and decided to go to Abashiri to see the drift ice. This was actually my second time having gone before a few years earlier. I was lucky on both occasions to see the drift ice because some days you can't see it as it depends on the weather and wind conditions.
Abashiri Prison Hokkaido Japan
The Abashiri Prison and Abashiri
This is a story that took place about 115 years ago. The Edo era ended and the Meiji era began. Around that time, Men cropped their topknots and wore their hair bobbed. Less and less people wore swords. This story took place in this desolate fishing village at the edge of Japan Island 20 years after the Meiji Restoration. In winter, the ocean near the village was frozen. So the life was hard for the pioneers. Ten years passed, and the number of people who remain in the village in winter finally started to increase. That was what Abashiri was like at that time.
One day, a government official with a fine beard came to the village. The official walked around the village and then climbed a mountain. And the found a spot he was looking for. On the north here was the Sea of Okhotsk, and Lake Abashiri was on the south. Lake Notori lied on the Westland a big river drifted at the foot of the mountain.
“Oh, great. This is it! It is hard to escape from here. And it is easy for us to keep an eye on them.”
Japan Hokkaido Ice Breaker Ship Experience @ Abashiri Drift-Ice Sea
The most attractive and adventurous trip to Hokkaido during winter is the ice breaker cruise. They only sail on fine weather so it really depends on your luck. It takes about two hours for a return trip. Our ship name was Aurora II. When we started sailing from Aurora terminal, we saw a lot of drift ice along the horizon. They were small and thin and floating in the water. Many seagulls flew above us as someone started to feed them until the announcement was made asking them to stop feeding the wilds. As we sailed further towards south, the drift ice becomes larger and thicker. We saw sea eagles resting on the drift ice in the middle of the sea. Our ship breaks the ice grinding them as we sailed along. It was such a wonderful sight, cold wind blowing, fresh air and a wonderful experience to try the ice breaker cruise.

Frosty reception - The Japan News
A white sheet of drifting ice covers waters in the coastal area of Abashiri, Hokkaido. The ice finally reached the coast on the Sea of Okhotsk on Monday.
Sailing out to see Abashiri Drift Ice (Ryuhyo).
So yesterday I went out on an ice-breaker ship into the frozen sea where the temperature apparently dropped to -14.
Wearing many layers, I actually never felt cold at all. (grateful to my skier friend who advised me so well on how to do the layers)
I actually planned to just have a restful day today, so decided to wander through Abashiri which in fact doesn’t seem to have much of interest to see, other than to make me marvel at how people live with so much snow! Somehow I arrived at the port and there was a big ship, and it was indeed the one you go out on to see the ice-floes in the sea, and it seemed sensible as I was already there to do it.
I must say these ships are well designed so that you can sit inside on comfortable couches looking out through large windows, which means you don’t actually have to spend 70 minutes freezing. So it was that for the most part I sat in the warmth, having peeled off most of the layers, and enjoyed the view without any heroics required on my part. Here and there I put the layers back on and went out to the observation deck to get a closer view, and to hear the sound of the ice cracking, returning inside before the cold could seep in. All very civilised.
Before this, I had had a very pleasant walk to the ship. I found myself on what I believe is the main street of this one-horse town. And what caught my eye? An ice-sculpture and yes, behind it was an igloo. This time I was invited inside!
So I have now been inside an igloo. Or as they call them here in Japan, a Kamakura.
We’ll draw a veil over the creaking and groaning to get myself in and out of that low entrance. Suffice it to say it wasn’t very elegant.
Spotting the ubiquitous little snow-men, (Yuki Daruma) I asked the young guys who seemed to be in charge if I could possibly make one. To my delight the answer was in the affirmative. Somehow I managed to give my snowman a tummy button instead of a nose, and the red paint has not come off my hand, in spite of a lovely soak in the hot tub back at the hotel, but I had fun so who cares?
You can see the little snow men (Yuki Daruma) featured here

HOKKAIDO Tour _Yuki Monogatari Ice breaking tour.
Yuki is a homonym for 'snow'
monogatari: Japanese for legend / story/ narrative.
So this is a tour through the legendary Iceland Akan _ snow forrest in eastern Hokkaido.
Flew from KLIA to Narita.
Took domestic flight from Haneda to Kushiro .
First stop in Akan National Park was Lake Mashu, a caldera lake. Lake Mashu is also one of the country's deepest lakes and although it is usually appreciated for its clear blue water, it is also famously and frequently blanketed in heavy fog.
Stayed in New Akan Shangrila Hotel , a ryokan hotel with onsen. It was beside a frozen Lake Akan and at night we visited the Ainu lIce Festival “Fuyukabi” on the frozen lake., complete with fireworks.
Next morning was a short visit again to the frozen lake to see ice fishing and snow- mobile rides.
Left Lake Akan for the Iozan Sulfur Mountain_ an active volcano in the vicinity of Kawayu Onsen. Its yellow, sulfurous vents can be viewed from a close proximity as visitors are free to walk around the steaming, smoking area. Eggs, cooked by the natural heat of the mountain, are usually on sale near the vents.
Lake Kussharo (Kussharoko)
_ the park's largest lake.
Whooper swans return to Lake Kussharo every winter as if to fulfill an age old promise. The surface of the lake freezes in the winter, but along its sandy beach geothermal springs prevent any ice from forming. There you will find some 300 whooper swans.
Monbetsu , on the Sea of Okhotsk.
a) the Okhotsk Tokkari Centerwhere seals (tokkari) from the Okhotsk Sea are raised and cared for. Chance to pat the seals.
b) boarded the icebreaker, the Garinko II, to view the drift ice.
Non existent that morning.
c)the Okhotsk Tower _ to observe sea ice from both high above, and from below the ocean. It is complete with an information center and aquarium.
Sōunkyō
A touristy hot spring resort town in the north of Daisetsuzan National Park.
a) Saw two frozen waterfalls, Ginga no Taki (Milky Way Falls) and Ryusei no Taki (Shooting Star Falls), which cascade down the 100 meter high cliffside.
b)Rode the Kurodake Ropeway(gondola) to the higher parts of Daisetsuzan National Park fo a panoramic view.
c) Sounkyo Ice festival_(Sounkyo Onsen Hyobaku Matsuri), featuring large, multi-story ice and snow structures with interior caverns and maze-like tunnels running through them. Although the layout of the festival changes from year to year, it usually includes large snow domes, ice sculptures, a snow tubing run (small fee required to rent tubes) and an event stage.
