A Quick Tour of Interesting Abashiri Prison -- Japan's Alcatraz
(Please don't forget to Share, Like and Subscribe! Thanks.)
Abashiri Prison Museum is by far one of the most interesting sights in Hokkaido. It was constructed in the 1890s to hold over 1,000 dangerous criminals; think of it as Japan's Alcatraz.
Very few prisoners ever escaped or even tried to escape because of Hokkaido's isolation and brutal winters. Where could they go with no food or clothing even though conditions inside the prison were not the best?
A modern prison still functions in Abashiri a few miles away but these are the original buildings.
What Japanese Prison Food is Like ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan has some amazing prison food, which should be no surprise. Inmates are served healthy, nutritious meals of grilled fish, salads, rice and soup - which are actually healthier than most school lunches around the world! Would you like to try what prisoners eat? There's a prison in Hokkaido that serves authentic meals to the public and that is where I went -- Abashiri.
Abashiri is in the very north of Hokkaido and is famous for its prison. Their Bangaichi Shokudo Diner is the only restaurant that serves authentic prison food in Japan, the ingredients the same as the penitentiary nearby. The meals will probably surprise you!
Prison Food Menu:
SET A: Pacific Saury, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (780 yen / $7.00)
SET B: Atka Mackerel, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (820 yen / $7.50)
It's called the secret meal because Japanese Prisons are very restrictive with access to the outside world. However, Abashiri is dfferent and they've opened up prison life to the public and it's worth a visit.
We also get a tour of today's prison cells in Japan. They have tatami mats, futons, TV, toilet and window. There are private cells and cells for 6 or more inmates. Japanese inmates typically eat their meals in their cells.
The Japanese prison life is regimented, the schedule the same everyday. Wake up at 6:40am and lights out at 9:00pm.
Meal time is three times a day for 20 minutes.
Where is Abashiri, Japan?
It's in Hokkaido's north, a 90 plane ride from Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

Abashiri Prison Hokkaido Japan
The Abashiri Prison and Abashiri
This is a story that took place about 115 years ago. The Edo era ended and the Meiji era began. Around that time, Men cropped their topknots and wore their hair bobbed. Less and less people wore swords. This story took place in this desolate fishing village at the edge of Japan Island 20 years after the Meiji Restoration. In winter, the ocean near the village was frozen. So the life was hard for the pioneers. Ten years passed, and the number of people who remain in the village in winter finally started to increase. That was what Abashiri was like at that time.
One day, a government official with a fine beard came to the village. The official walked around the village and then climbed a mountain. And the found a spot he was looking for. On the north here was the Sea of Okhotsk, and Lake Abashiri was on the south. Lake Notori lied on the Westland a big river drifted at the foot of the mountain.
“Oh, great. This is it! It is hard to escape from here. And it is easy for us to keep an eye on them.”
Abashiri Prison (1965) by Teruo Ishii
Abashiri Prison is located in the coldest place in Japan. Two men, handcuffed together have escaped from the prison, one a yakuza, the other a petty criminal, and although they hate each other they must work together if they are to evade capture in this harshest of climates.

[The Incredible Japanese Prison Break]
Aomori, Japan. 1936. Prisoner Yoshie Shiratori had had enough.
He was forced to confess to a murder he did not commit, falsely imprisoned in Aomori Prison, beaten and tortured every night by prison guards, and, now worse, prosecutors were seeking the death penalty. In his mind, it was time to go; but Aomori Prison wasn’t the easiest to escape.
Regardless, Yoshie Shiratori had nothing to lose, and so at 5:30 am he made his move. He knew there would be a 15 minute gap in the patrol time as he had studied the guards’ routine for months; and when the coast was clear, he pulled out a metal wire (which he had smuggled in from the bathhouse) and started to pick the lock. (This was originally the metal support ring that was wrapped around the bathing buckets inmates used to wash themselves).
His hands were stiff from the wintry cold, but after a few minutes of picking, he had success, and his cell door swung open. But he wasn’t out of the woods yet, because there were more locked doors ahead. He knew he only had a few minutes left before the guards would return, and so he wasted no time attempting to pick his way through the remaining security doors.
Now fortunately for him, he was able to make it out of the facility, but the bad news was that he was only halfway to freedom. You see, he was still well within the search perimeter, which meant at any moment the alarm could go off and he’d still be caught.
At 5:45am the guards returned, peering into his cell; and this is what they saw - Shiratori sound asleep in his futon bed. ...

If you clicked on this, I assume you’ve already watched the “The Incredible Japanese Prison Break”, and as it turns out, many of you had some lingering questions that needed answering, like:
- Where did all the dirt go?
- How can anyone break handcuffs with their bare hands?
- Why didn’t anyone see the rust after using the miso soup?
- How can you add three more years to a life sentence?
- What exactly was Shiratori’s initial crime that led to his first arrest?
- What happened to him after being released from prison?
- Was this whole video just an ad, bro?
- And, as a bonus, what’s the next Kento Bento video going to be about?
I answer all these questions in the video.
