The city of Abashiri in Hokkaido is of little interest in terms of tourist site, however in winter which is probably the most interesting of all, the aurora icebreaker which is only available in winter during the period when the Okhotsk Sea freezes and turns into ice. the cruise lasts about 1 hour and had 3300 yen, quite expensive but that will be worth it.

The most attractive and adventurous trip to Hokkaido during winter is the ice breaker cruise. They only sail on fine weather so it really depends on your luck. It takes about two hours for a return trip. Our ship name was Aurora II. When we started sailing from Aurora terminal, we saw a lot of drift ice along the horizon. They were small and thin and floating in the water. Many seagulls flew above us as someone started to feed them until the announcement was made asking them to stop feeding the wilds. As we sailed further towards south, the drift ice becomes larger and thicker. We saw sea eagles resting on the drift ice in the middle of the sea. Our ship breaks the ice grinding them as we sailed along. It was such a wonderful sight, cold wind blowing, fresh air and a wonderful experience to try the ice breaker cruise.

This one-hour cruise on a sight-seeing boat is a non-event in our opinion. Labeled as an Icebreaker, I would guess ice strengthened hull is more like it since it does not crunch through ice. A trip to Abashiri in Hokkaido – Enjoy the drift ice aboard an icebreaker and Abashiri specialties
An icebreaker boat departs Michi-no-eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri every day from the end of January to the end of March. It's impressive to watch the boat break apart blocks of drift ice as it moves forward. Visitors are sure to be stunned by the power of nature. After seeing the drift ice, visitors can enjoy local specialty cuisine at a restaurant overlooking the sea.

In this video, we catch an ANA Flight from Haneda Airport to Memanbetsu Airport. Then, we catch a bus to Abashiri Train Station where we catch a Drift Ice Sightseeing train called the Ryuho Monogatari (Drift Ice Story). Following this, we go to the Northern-most Prison now turned museum in Japan, then hop onboard the Aurora Ice Breaking cruise.
