Cong Abbey - County Mayo - Ireland

CONG ABBEY - Cong South, Co. Mayo, Ireland
The monastery of Cong, founded in the early 7th century, was destroyed by fire in the early 12th century. Turlough O’Conor, the High-King of Ireland, refounded the abbey around 1135 AD, and his son Rory constructed new buildings. The community adopted the Augustinian rule several years later. Soon after, in 1203 AD, the attacked the town, and again the monastery had to be rebuilt. Very little remains of the abbey.
The present church, and possibly also the fragmentary cloister, where the monks once worked and prayed, belong to the rebuilding of the early 13th century. The north doorway of the church, and the elaborate doorways that open onto the cloister from the east range of the monastery, might pre-date the destruction by William de Burgo. The doorway with two fine windows on either side of it belongs to the chapter house, where the monastery’s business was conducted and a chapter of the rule read every day. This was also where the community gathered to confess their sins publicly. The sculpture in the abbey, which suggests links with western France, is some of the finest in Ireland.
The monastery kitchen had a bell with a line that went all the way to the Fishing House. When the monks caught fish they would pull on the line to ring the bell so the cook would know that fresh fish would be available.

Cong Abbey (From The 7th Century)
Achill Historical Society visit to Cong Abbey 06.09.2015.
In the early 7th century, a church was built at this site, reportedly by Saint Feichin. A later building was destroyed by fire in 1114. Within the next twenty years or so, Turlough Mor O’Connor, the High King of Ireland, refounded the abbey. Raiders from Munster destroyed the buildings in 1137 but they were rebuilt by King Turlough.
In 1198, his son, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (Rory O'Connor), Ireland's last High King, constructed new buildings and also lived the last 15 years of his life at the abbey. He died here and was reportedly briefly buried in the abbey before being exhumed and re-interred at Clonmacnoise.[1] The monastery adopted the Augustinian rule some years later.[citation needed]
Cong Abbey was also closely associated with the O'Duffy family at least from 1097 to 1501. The Annals of the Four Masters record that in 1150, Muireadhach Ua Dubhthaigh, Archbishop of Connacht, died at Cong aged 75. His name is inscribed upon the processional Cross of Cong.
The Norman knight, William de Burgh, attacked Cong in 1203, and again the abbey was rebuilt.
In the 13th century the abbey was reconstructed and dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Cong Abbey was suppressed in 1542 during the reign of Henry VIII. Although it was at times used by monks after that point, it later fell into ruins.
The last (nominal) abbot was Father Patrick Prendergast, parish priest of Cong from 1795 until his death in 1829. He was the preserver of the Cross of Cong. After his death, the cross was bought by James MacCullagh for the Royal Irish Academy.
The first restoration of the abbey was started by Benjamin Guinness in 1855, soon after he had bought nearby Ashford Castle in 1852.

Out & About Northern Ireland Visits Cong - Setting for 1951 Film The Quiet Man
In 1951 John Ford's greatest movie The Quiet Man starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald was made. It was set in the beautiful west of Ireland with filming being centered in the village of Cong on the Mayo-Galway border.
Much of the film was filmed on the grounds of Ashford Castle - the town and castle area remain little changed since 1951. Cong's connection with the movie make it a tourist attraction.
Quiet Man Cottage Museum is a must visit for the Quiet Man enthusiast which will give the visitor a total Quiet Man experience as if they were actually 'on-set'. Located by the river at Circular Road, Cong, between actual locations used for the filming, the ground floor of the cottage has been designed as an exact replica of 'White-o-Mornin' Cottage.
A beautiful village with a very interesting connection!

Cong Abbey - Irland

Cong, Connemara, and Galway City
Here's Paddywagon tour number 3! We went to a quiet little town called Cong, which is where the movie Quiet Man was filmed. On our way to Galway City we stopped at a few places in Connemara to admire the majestic mountains and Lough Corrib. In Galway City I was delighted to find that one of the family flags contained the crest of Morris, which was my Grami's surname before she married.

Kylemore Abbey in Ireland
Author/speaker Charlie Adams takes you to the lush emerald isle of Ireland to Kylemore Abbey, an intensely romantic place, an enchanted fairy-tale castle in the neo-Gothic style. It stands dramatically at the foot of a barren mountain in a remote and beautiful part of Connemara - its numerous battlemented and machicolated towers and turrets reflected in the waters of the lake below. For years this amazing house, now a convent, has been the most admired and photographed building in the West of Ireland. For ten years the Henrys and their nine children lived at Kylemore, entertaining on a lavish scale. Tragedy struck in I875 when Margaret died on a visit to Egypt. She was buried in a mausoleum at Kylemore, but afterwards her husband could no longer bear to spend much time there.
Charlie is the author of 2013's 'How to Build a Positive Attitude and KEEP the Darn Thing!!' He delivers keynotes and seminars on the power of the positive attitude to companies, colleges and schools, and churches. To order this book
