Sorde-l'Abbaye est une commune française située dans le département des Landes en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Rattachée au canton de Peyrehorade, la commune de Sorde est limitrophe du département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Le Monastère de l’abbaye de Sorde

Découverte du monastère de l'abbaye Saint Jean de Sorde en Pays d'Orthe, à la croisée des Landes, du Béarn et du Pays Basque. Monastère bénédictin plusieurs fois détruit par les guerres de religions. Les derniers moines ont été chassés après la révolution, puis l’édifice a été transformé en hôpital militaire par les troupes napoléoniennes. Il a une configuration unique au monde, reflétant la grande richesse des moines dont l'un des trésors était le saumon sauvage. Après avoir frôlé la ruine, le monastère est peu à peu restauré. Il est inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

Camino 2019 - The French Chapter - Day 48 - Sorde-l’Abbaye to Saint-Palais

We left Sorde-l’Abbaye without knowing our destination for the day. All our attempts at booking two beds for the night had met with failure - we couldn’t understand how everywhere for 35km was full when we had only seen two other pilgrims walking the route.
Clive has previously offered to help us out if we were in a bind so we took him up on his kind offer. He found out there was the biggest medieval festival of the year happening this week and that’s why all beds are booked, he also got us a bed in Saint-Palais so we had somewhere to aim for (even though it was quite far away). If Mary and Joseph has Clive’s help the Christmas nativity scene would look very different because Clive would have got them a room. Thanks mate!
It was beautiful scenery with the mountains in the distance and the way was quite varied. Our feet were suffering in the latter part of the walk after yesterday’s marathon! We actually covered two stages in one day today and walked 36km.
The accomodation is great - only for pilgrims with a shared shower and toilets but we got our own room. Breakfast included at €9! They even have a washing machine!

Día 50 (Sorde l’Abbaye - Bergouey)

Día 50 entrando en el prepirineo, País Vasco. Maravilloso paisaje del que te enamoras mires donde mires, y creo que lo mejor aún está por llegar. Etapa de toboganes arriba y abajo, bonita y entretenida. Parada en Bergouey, un pueblecito muy pequeño con un albergue en el Ayuntamiento que tiene todo lo necesario para una estancia más que cómoda. ¡Y wifi! (No lo suficientemente potente para subir el vídeo) Porque por según que zonas, lo del 4G es un mito jajaja.
¡Mañana más y mejor!

Camino 2019 - The French Chapter - Day 47 - Saint-Paul-lès-Dax to Sorde-l’Abbaye

Walking again! It was a little strange but the weather was good for walking. We followed the shell markers out of Dax and into the foothills of the Pyrenees. We sheltered from a couple of squalls and walked and walked. We bumped into Philippe and Claudine, the pilgrims we met yesterday. We somehow ended up too far south and had to go north to get to Sorde-l’Abbaye which added some km’s to the day. We walked 37.5km!
