Abbey Caves, Whangarei - New Zealand
Day 293 - limestone caving in waist high water with eels, yabbies and the best glow worms we have seen!
Abbey Caves Adventure at Whangarei
The Abbey Caves are completely undeveloped and unguided. Entry is at your own risks.
The Organ Cave is the largest of the caves and is easy going to the 50ft high cavern. You will see large overhanging stalactites which look similar to church organ pipes and a “starry night of glow worms”. In the Organ Cave you must enter and exit from the same point.
The Middle Cave and Ivy Cave are smaller and it is possible to enter and exit at different points. Middle Cave is the shortest with a slightly tricky climb out at the end.
Ivy Cave has a short section of low ceiling after 60metres and you will see graffiti from the 1800s . In the last 15 metres of the journey the water gets deeper and the base is mud however, it is an easy climb out.
All of the caves have thousands of glow worms.
You'll need to set aside a few hours to do this properly, and you will need a torch, but that is all part of the adventure.
The caves are undeveloped, so all care and safety is required when exploring. Be sensible, bring appropriate footwear (closed in shoes) and all necessary precautions.
Firstly you'll park on the road-side, and the signs say it all lock it or lose it. The Abbey Caves are in a relatively remote area and you are unlikely to be back to your car in a hurry, so be sensible and lock anything valuable out of site.
You'll walk down a dirt farm path until you reach a boulder strewn farmland, technically sculptured limestone outcrops and bluffs to be precise! Follow your nose along a mowed grass path until you reach the Organ Cave and as the name suggests, you'll find musical-looking rock formations not far away. This particular cave has had a roof fall at the entrance, making it dangerous in places.
Many of the caves (including this one) are difficult to get to. You will need a good level of fitness and expect to get wet (water flows through most of these caves, albeit shallow).
Keep walking, climb a few wooden farm stiles and you'll come across two more caves signposted, Middle and Ivy Caves.
Eventually you'll be lead through a rock forest with huge and most beautiful rock formations, before looping back to the main path.

Halloween in Abbey Caves, Whangarei, NZ
Manfred Nossmann Nelson Abbey Caves near Whangarei
My absolute favourite spot around Whangarei. To discover the hidden grave of a 2-year old boy, who died in 1884, by the name Louis Clotworthy gave the place an almost sinister character - in spite of all the beauty surrounding the grave. Hopefully Vanessa Mae found the right tunes to frame the attached shots.

Abbey Caves & the Glow worms, Bay Of Islands, New Zealand [GoPro]
ABBEY CAVES
Abbey Caves Reserve is 18.7 hectares in area and comprises three significant caves, naturally sculptured limestone outcrops, bluffs, enclosed depressions and sink holes.
THE GLOW WORMS
So, what is a glow worm? The larva of NZ's most famous fly. The life cycle of a glow worm is about a year from larva to fly and during this period it casts the luminous glow for which it is named. Looking at a ceiling of glow worms is like gazing at stars on a clear night. Totally beautiful and surreal!

BAY OF ISLANDS
The Bay of Islands is an area in the Northland Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Located 60 km north-west of Whangarei, it is about 210 km by road to Cape Reinga at the northern tip of the country.
It is one of the most popular fishing, sailing and tourist destinations in the country, and has been renowned internationally for its big-game fishing since American author Zane Grey publicised it in the 1930s.

【紐西蘭】Abbey Glowworm Caves | 免費螢火蟲洞?! (Eng Sub) - NZ VLOG #8

【關於我 / About Me】
Hello! My name is Hio Wai, a traveller from Hong Kong.
I started backpacking Southeast Asia in 2012. Since then, I visited most of the countries in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, US, Peru, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet and got addicted to travelling. In 2017, I decided to start my blog, YouTube channel and Facebook page, hoping to share my trips and travel tips with you!
Whangarei Love it here!!!
I made this video to show off my own backyard of Whangarei . Ive been traveling all over the world and it really makes you appreciate how beautiful New Zealand is. I youtubed Whangarei at the start of summer and I was really unimpressed. Nothing really captured how beautiful this place is so me and some friends this summer got together and had some good times and made this video. Whangarei love it here enjoy!
