Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, is a large, mainly Gothic abbey church in the City of Westminster, London, England, just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is one of the United Kingdom's most notable religious buildings and the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and, later, British monarchs. The building itself was a Benedictine monastic church until the monastery was dissolved in 1539. Between 1540 and 1556, the abbey had the status of a cathedral. Since 1560, the building is no longer an abbey or a cathedral, having instead the status of a Church of England Royal Peculiar—a church responsible directly to the sovereign. According to a tradition first reported by Sulcard in about 1080, a church was founded at the site in the seventh century, at the time of Mellitus, a Bishop of London. Construction of the present church began in 1245, on the orders of King Henry III.Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all coronations of English and British monarchs have been in Westminster Abbey. There have been 16 royal weddings at the abbey since 1100.

What is the Sicilian Avenue? an interesting thing about this street is the monumental nee-classical or Edwardian style arches that borders the two ends of the street. The street is pedestrian shopping parade, although there aren't actually that many shops in the street. As the street is in a mainly business district of London, the shops/restaurants are mostly mid to high end, but pleasant nevertheless. It's kind of quiet during the weekends.

This charming street called Sicilian Avenue it's probably the most wonderful pedestrian little street in London. It is just off Bloomsbury Sq and is lined with small boutiques & several places to eat & drink. Many eateries have outdoor seating which is perfect on a sunny day. Crossrail skeletons shed light on London 450 years ago

Human remains unearthed during Crossrail, Britain's largest construction project, have revealed the fates of migrants to London up to 450 years ago.More than 3,000 skeletons were brought to light at one site, the former New Churchyard burial ground used by the 'Bedlam' hospital.Expert analysis found many of the bodies belonged to people who had moved to the capital from the countryside.Disease and dirt lead to their untimely demises while in their late teens or early adulthood.Researchers at the the Museum of London Archaeology (Mola) will release their findings in a study to be published later this month, according to reports in the Times.The remains were uncovered at the new Elizabeth line station at Liverpool Street, which was used as a burial ground between 1569 and 1739.Archaeologists believe many of the buried dead were youngsters who came to London seeking work, or to meet and marry other young people.Instead, they would succumb to the city's 'bad hygiene, pollution, foul water, poor waste disposal and exposure to urban diseases,' including tuberculosis, syphilis and the plague.Experts examining the teeth of the deceased also found that plaque, which formed as a result of poor dental hygiene, revealed the use of medicinal plants to treat illnesses.They include borage, also known as starflower, which was used for the treatment of stomach issues and other disorders.Speaking to The Times, Don Walker, Mola's senior human osteologist and co-author of the study, said: 'This gives us the first proof that there were a large number of people coming into the city.'To get people in that [young] age range dying was a real surprise. 'Tuberculosis was a typical kind of disease that spreads in a crowded environment.'These people were dying because they weren't born in London. 'Engineers working on the Crossrail transport link cut tunnels running east to west through the heart of the city.Layers of the city's history spanning more 55 million years have been uncovered in the process.Due to open in 2018, the 73 mile (118km) trans-London Crossrail line is Britain's biggest construction project, and its largest archaeological dig for decades.The central 13 mile (21km) section runs underground, which has meant tunnelling beneath some of the oldest and most densely populated parts of the city.The Bedlam site was used during a period of devastating plague, fire and civil war, even as London boomed to become the largest city in Europe, containing nearly 10 per cent of England’s population.Isotope studies identified unique isotopic signatures within the skeleton, or variants of a chemical element with a different number of neutrons in its nucleus.They were undertaken on samples from the teeth of 20 skeletons that had been excavated from the burial ground.They showed that nearly half of them had migrated into London from elsewhere in England, with one person coming from a different country with a much warmer climate.All of the skeletons appear to have been exposed to high levels of lead during childhood, perhaps from lead water pipes and glazed ceramics which would have been used for preparing and serving food.This could have led to delinquent behaviours and even compromised intelligence. Experts examining the teeth of the deceased also found that plaquerevealed the use of medicinal plants to treat illnesses.Don Walker, takes a tooth sample (left). Severe calculus deposits on the teeth of a male skeleton are represented on the graphic (right) Dental calculus analysis examines traces of DNA and microscopic material trapped in the hardened plaque of the teeth.This revealed the common bacteria carried in their mouths and throats, and included flu, pneumoniae and dental disease.Evidence of the treatments they used was also found in the form of pollen grains from medicinal plants such as borage, which was used to treat everything from ‘putrid and pestilential fevers’ to ‘expelling pensiveness and melancholy’.The dental analysis also provided insight into the everyday activities that people were engaging in.The remains of chicken feather barbules, likely to be from plucking birds; fibres of flax, hemp and wool, probably the result of exposure to dust from the textile industry; and evidence of exposure to smoke and soot from domestic fires.When they arrived they were greeted by increasingly crowded conditions. The results from the site shed light on what jobs migrants had and where they came from, what they ate, what illnesses they suffered

George IV (George Augustus Frederick; 12 August 1762 – 26 June 1830) was king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and king of Hanover following the death of his father, George III, on 29 January 1820, until his own death ten years later. From 1811 until his accession, he served as Prince Regent during his father's final mental illness.
George IV led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to the fashions of the Regency era. He was a patron of new forms of leisure, style and taste. He commissioned John Nash to build the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and remodel Buckingham Palace, and Sir Jeffry Wyattville to rebuild Windsor Castle. He was instrumental in the foundation of the National Gallery and King's College London.

This will be a multi-part UK Road Trip series as we drive from London over to Wales, up to Scotland and back down again.

In Part 6 we traveled to Glenfinnan, Scotland to see the real-life Hogwarts Express cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct! Then, we went on a Coo Safari in Scotland’s Highlands! After spotting a few furry Highland cows, we made our way to Edinburgh. There, we went on a Harry Potter walking tour where we visited many places that were instrumental in influencing J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter books!

In Part 5, we made our way to Scotland for the first time, stopping in Glasgow and ending our video with a cheeky whisky tasting at the Oban Distillery in Oban, Scotland! We tasted and reviewed four Oban whiskeys, including the Oban Little Bay, Oban 14 Year Old, Oban Distiller’s Edition and the Oban Distillery Exclusive Bottling!

In Part 4, we explored Liverpool, the Lake District in England, including gorgeous Keswick, and magical standing stones as old as Stonehenge! We also ate some homemade gingerbread at the famous Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread shop, and hiked to the waterfall at Aira Force.

In Part 3, we explored the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Ironbridge, England! Then, we spent a few days exploring Northern Wales, including Conwy, Anglesey, Snowdonia National Park and Newborough Beach!

In Part 2, we explored the charming villages of the Cotswolds in England, Cardiff, Wales, and Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon, England!

In Part 1, we explored Bath, England and the mysterious, ancient site of Stonehenge. We also traveled to Glastonbury, England, which is known for its quirkiness and historic abbey ruins.

How to See the Hogwarts Express, aka Jacobite Train, cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct:

Step 1 – Reference this Google Maps walking route
(Note: there is free parking 200 meters NW of the Glenfinnan Monument Parking lot, where you turn right on A830, but you’ll need to get there early to get a space):

Step 2 – Check the dates & times the Jacobite train runs:

Step 3 – Plan ahead and arrive early!
The train passes the viaduct approximately 30 minutes after departing from Fort William station. The train will pass around 10:45am if departing from Fort William at 10:15am and pass around 3:10pm if leaving Fort William at 2:40pm. The walk from the parking lot will take you 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 4 – Find your favorite spot to view the train
When the train departs Fort William for Mallaig, it will be heading West. We recommend finding a spot on the far left (West) and South of the viaduct to get the best views. You’ll want to give yourself 15 minutes to find your favorite spot before the train arrives.

Step 5 – Capture the moment with photos and videos!
Final advice, plan to arrive at least one hour before the train passes the viaduct to give you plenty of time to secure a parking space, walk to the viaduct and locate your favorite position to watch the train.

London walk: St James's Park on a summer's evening, via St James's Square, Pall Mall and The Mall

St James’s Park on a summer’s evening with the sun starting to set is the focus of this walk. I start at Piccadilly Arcade making my way along Jermyn Street and then past Christie’s to arrive at St James’s Square (the gardens were closed by the time I arrived). From there I headed down to Pall Mall, the route of a previous walk I had done in the winter, and onto Waterloo Place before crossing The Mall into St James’s Park. Everyone was out enjoying the August sunshine as it started setting providing shadowy views across St James’s Park Lake across to Buckingham Palace from the vantage point of Duck Island Cottage. With Horse Guards Parade to my left and Birdcage Walk to my right, I passed the Churchill War Rooms and headed towards HM Treasury before turning into Birdcage Walk ending the walk at Westminster and Big Ben all covered in scaffolding. At the end of the video, I have included a couple of extra sections – one of the view from Westminster Bridge along the Thames towards the London Eye and the other taking a very quick peek inside Fortnum and Mason. Finally, if you look carefully to the right around 15:40 in St James's Park, you will see some pretty impressive gymnastic moves.

Honestly I’m not that happy with the footage I shot for this video, I seem to be back to my old habits of moving the camera too much. I thought the Pocket had put an end to that, so I’m not quite sure why it came out super-swingy. I’ll try harder next time; I find I work better with the Pocket attached to a phone, so will go back to that again.

Driving in London: Paddington - St John's Wood

On my way to pick up a fare in leafy St John's Wood in London.

The area of St John's Wood was made famous by The Beatles on the cover of their album Abbey Road in 1969. The iconic image of them crossing the road has been replicated millions of times by tourists for their own photo collections.

Crossrail's giant tunnelling machine breaks through to Whitechapel

Crossrail's 150-metre long, 1,000 tonne tunnel boring machine, nicknamed Elizabeth breaks through to Whitechapel station

Another milestone in a £14.8 billion rail scheme was reached today with the breakthrough to Whitechapel station of a 1,000-tonne tunnel boring machine.

The giant tunnelling machines, nicknamed Elizabeth was launched from the Limmo site near Canning Town towards the end of last year digging its way from Canary Wharf towards Stepney Green and then on to Whitechapel and Liverpool Street.

Its final destination is Farringdon by the end of 2014.
