'Museum Reborn' - The Story of the Abbey Museum
This is story of John Ward and the Abbey Museum, from its genesis in England as the Abbey Folk Park, to it's re-emergence in Caboolture QLD, as the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology.
It's a remarkable story that started with a childhood passion for history and a kindly curator at the British Museum that led to the establishment of Britain’s first social history museum, the Abbey Folk Park. The story includes a war, a devastating court case, a translocation to Cyprus, the EOKA movement, a future journey on the high seas to Australia, settlement in the Blue Mountains and the final move to Caboolture.
Many thanks to the Regional Arts Development Fund - Moreton Bay committee for seeing the value of this project.
Additional thanks to Dr Geoff Ginn, author of the biography of John Ward, Michael Strong, the Museum’s Senior Curator, and George Cuffe from the Abbey Community for their involvement and contribution to this project.

The Abbey Museum, with the support of the Moreton Bay Regional Council, Regional Development Australia (RDA) Moreton Bay and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) have created a conceptualised scope of Abbeystowe Medieval Life Experience, a unique tourism attraction that would immerse visitors, from throughout the world, into medieval life and times.
The Abbeystowe Medieval Life Experience is a proposed living museum concept located at Caboolture in the Moreton Bay Region, ideally situated between Brisbane; Queensland’s capital city and the Sunshine Coast.
2017 TV ad 1
In 2018, the 29th Abbey Medieval Festival brings you an extended program with more engaging personal experiences, more immersive family-fun and more active learning than ever-before.
This spectacular event serves as a vital fund-raiser for the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, in Caboolture, North Brisbane in fulfilling its vision of ‘enriching people’s lives through the stories created from our collection’.
The Middle Ages (7th-17th century) saw the flowering of art, architecture, science, and the dawning of the era of exploration. Through this unique annual celebration, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology enables visitors across Australia and Queensland to co-create their own medieval experience in a highly engaging and immersive event that is proudly the most authentic in the southern hemisphere. Re-enactors, musicians and street performers from across Australia join in a dynamic display of life, pageantry and the drama of medieval Europe. The Festival includes two banquets, a week of children-focused activities at the ‘Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun’ week and a tournament weekend with displays of iron-clad warriors locked in battle and jousting knights on their magnificent horses. There is archery, dancing, music, games, crafts and a large medieval market. Visitors are encouraged to wear period costume to deepen their own personal medieval experience.

The Medieval Trebuchet
The trebuchet was the most frightening of the weapons early European warriors employed in siege warfare. They also relied on battering rams, siege towers, tunnels - anything to gain access to a castle. Defenders, meanwhile, had a few tricks of their own...

HUZZAH!! Abbey Medieval Festival Vlog || July 2017
This week I am taking you with me on a little adventure to the Abbey Medieval Festival! My friend Averil and I thought it might be nice to film a little bit of our day to share with you because we had so much fun, and thought it would be a shame not to share the experience. This time last year I had just started my channel and took my camera with me to try and vlog but the footage was so shaky, my talking was non-existent, and nothing went to plan, so while it’s not perfect, I still think it’s a pretty big step up! I hope you like this video and I look forward to filming a few vlogs here and there in the future! If you enjoyed our little adventure vlog, head over to my instagram and check out some of the other things I have been up to. And of course, be sure to check out the video from last week!

Height's link to identifying missing persons | Kristy Winter | TEDxQUT
More than 500 bodies in morgues around Australia are unidentified missing persons. At the Skeletal Biology and Forensic Anthropology Research Laboratory (QUT), Kristy Winter and the laboratory use various imaging techniques to measure bones for the development of equations that can assist with identifying missing persons from their height. The task is daunting, but there something you can do to help. (May contain upsetting material.) Kristy Winter is a researcher with the Skeletal Biology and Forensic Anthropology Research Laboratory (QUT) working towards developing equations to assist with the identification of Australian missing persons from their skeletons. With current research focusing on the estimation of sex and height for Queensland's Coronal system based on the upper arm bone (humerus). Winter's work has lead to active opportunities with researchers and practitioners filtering water in Qunicha Colombia, cataloguing in the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, and casework with the Odyssey Field School in Limassol, Cyprus. During the down time Winter is a Senior Field Operator for Queensland's State Emergency Services, assisting local police and the community with mass disasters, public events and missing persons searchers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
