This abbey has well-preserved buildings and is an example of how impressive can be a Romanesque architectural style. When you visit the abbey you will find out how in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries monks lived and worked. Together with the abbeys of Sénanque and Silvacane it creates a set of three major monasteries in Provence.

ABBAYE DU THORONET -THE THORONET ABBEY
L'abbaye du Thoronet est une abbaye cistercienne située sur la commune du Thoronet, dans le département français du Var et la région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
Classée au titre des monuments historiques l’abbaye du Thoronet est une des « trois sœurs provençales », les deux autres étant Sénanque (Vaucluse) et Silvacane (Bouches-du-Rhône).
Les Cisterciens rejettent la richesse et le luxe. Ils prônent une architecture dépouillée de tout superflu.
La raison d’être des communautés cisterciennes est la gloire de Dieu qu’elles célèbrent par la liturgie (chants et paroles). Les églises sont donc bâties pour avoir la meilleure acoustique possible : une seule voix peut emplir la voûte. La qualité de la pierre est primordiale (rôle joué par le calcaire dans la qualité acoustique de l’abbatiale du Thoronet).
L’église du Thoronet a été construite suivant des règles précises qui répondent à sa destination, notamment pour favoriser la relation entre la terre et le ciel.
Les bâtisseurs ont intégré dans le tracé des fondements de l’abbaye les figures géométriques symbolisant le cheminement du profane au sacré : cercle, triangle, carré, rectangle.... Ces figures mises en relation avec des nombres induisent un message symbolique, des sentiments, une atmosphère :
- 1 et le cercle : Dieu, le ciel, l’éternité
- 3 et le triangle : la Trinité (les trois baies de l’abside de l’église)
- 4 et le carré : le monde matériel (la création), les 4 éléments, le nombre de saisons, les points cardinaux…
L’église du Thoronet est bâtie sur un plan en forme de croix latine, son tracé correspond au principe du nombre d’or. Ce dernier était l’une des manières des bâtisseurs d’exprimer leur foi à l’époque romane. Il servait à donner des proportions harmonieuses à leurs constructions.
Les proportions de l’église sont à l’origine de son acoustique
exceptionnelle, celle-ci étant particulièrement propice à l’exécution du chant grégorien.
Le nombre d’or est un rapport entre deux dimensions de grandeurs
différentes. Il a une valeur égale à 1,618… On trouve ce rapport dans la nature, dans des oeuvres réalisées par les hommes : monuments, sculptures…
Dans une église, on trouve sa présence dans son plan par exemple. Il est égal au rapport longueur/largeur.
Le nombre d’or rejoint la symbolique en ceci qu’il est lié aux proportions qui régissent le corps humain. Les mesures prises sur le corps jusqu’à l’invention du système métrique étaient proportionnées selon le nombre d’or : coudée, pied, empan, palme, paume sont en rapport les unes avec les autres selon le nombre 1,618.
Prosper Mérimée la considère comme un monument majeur de l’architecture romane. En 1840, l’abbaye fait partie
de la première liste des monuments français devant être sauvés de l’abandon et de la ruine et nécessitant une restauration.

In 2014 some of the brethren visited the Abbey of Thoronet, in France. It is an old Cistercian Abbey, founded in 1176. The Abbey was closed during the French Revolution and is now a museum. The chapel has the most amazing acoustic — an echo of 9 seconds!

The Abbey of Fontenay is a former Cistercian abbey located in the commune of Marmagne, near Montbard, in the département of Côte-d'Or in France. It was founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1118, and built in the Romanesque style. It is one of the oldest and most complete Cistercian abbeys in Europe, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Of the original complex comprising church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, refectory, dovecote and forge, all remain intact except the refectory and are well maintained. The Abbey of Fontenay, along with other Cistercian abbeys, forms a connecting link between Romanesque and Gothic architectures.
La Thoronet Abbey (Abbaye du Thoronet)
A short film, made of photos taken with my Canon 30D, showing some of the moments that struck me during an unfortunately short visit to this wonderful Abbey (one of the three Cistercian sister abbeys from the 12th and early thirteenth centuries in Provence) in August 2009. The place had a strong influence on Le Corbusier, culminating in the realisation of the sublime La Tourette monestary designed by him for the Domincan Order. I will be going back at some point in the not too distant future to spend a day there, and hopefully an evening, in order to get a better understanding of its appeal. For more see:

THORONET ABBEY
Monks from the Ardèche region of France traveled in the 11th c. to what is now the Var département in Provence, not far from the Mediterranean sea, and built this Cistercian abbey in only about 15 years. There is no main door to the nave in the church, because this was not a public place -- there were no visitors. Some of the dormitory for the monks is shown here -- each stone square on the floor, beneath one of the bays, marks where a monk put his straw mattress. This was a silent order, Benedictine.
The acoustics in the church are perfect. The simplicity of the style is striking -- note the lack of elaborate ornamentation on the columns in the cloister.
I climbed up some steps and visited the cell lived in by the abbot -- sort of the overseer of the monks. They were buried here with no markers on their graves, wrapped only in linen, taking their vows of poverty to the end.
This is quite a large complex and not a far drive from Cotignac, where I rented a troglodyte house for a week. The sense of peace and austerity in this place is strong and pleasant. This part of France is called Green Provence (Provence Verte) and really is very green. A mountainous region thick with flora.
Considered one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in France, this had long been on my list for holy places to visit.

The Thoronet abbey, a Cisterian monastery founded in 1146 by the Tourtour monks in a wild setting in the Var region, gathers its monastery buildings around a cloister which is protected by sturdy arcatures from the Romanesque period. Apart from the palm tree vault in the chapter house, the barrel vault predominates; its majestic volumes round out everywhere, from the church to the storeroom without forgetting the dormitory, which rose from the ruins brought about by the 18th century improvements. The state purchased the abbey progressively from 1854 onwards and it recovered its original appearance thanks to important renovation works.

THORONET ABBEY, NAVE
There are no great doors to the nave, as there were never visitors here. This was a secluded order of Benedictine monks in a Cistercian order, in the Var département of France.
Founded in the 11th c. by monks who walked down from Ardèche, another wild and mountainous region of France, this was a silent order and they made money by making wine and olive oil.
This is a really pleasant place and the vibe here was very agreeable.
This was in May.
The South of France is full of wonders. I really recommend Provence and the Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera.

I love the peace and special energy of L' Abbaye de Thoronet which can be felt especially on the stones of the Monks' Graveyard.
Whenever I come to visit I meditate on one of the stones, where the remains of the monks found during reconstruction works are buried.
Inside the Abbey you have an incredible arcustic when you walk up and down the aisle.
Whenever I come sing and are impressed how it seems as if a hidden choir is singing.I love the peace and special energy of L' Abbaye de Thoronet.

L'abbaye du Thoronet (Var) est à l'instar de ses deux soeurs (Sénanque et Silvacane) un édifice cistercien du XII e siècle. Le Thoronet outre le style roman d'une grande pureté présente en plus, quelques éléments de fortifications, en outre son cloître s'agrémente d'un lavabo très achevé... à visiter!!!
