The Gur Sikh Temple in Abbottsford, British Columbia, is the oldest standing Sikh Temple in North America, and a host of celebrations is being planned to celebrate its 100th birthday.
The temple was constructed in 1911 by a small group of Punjabi farm workers and labourers who had settled in the area a century ago.
Now, it is a Canadian National Historic site, the only Sikh Temple in the world to have been given heritage status of any kind.
A year of celebratory plans includes the construction of a museum in the temple's basement and the issue of a national stamp.

Abbostford Gurdwara turns 100
The Abbotsford Gurdawara, the oldest Sikh temple in North America, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Abbotsford mayor George Peary officially launched the celebrations on Monday by proclaiming 2011 Year of the Gurdwara.
He said a lot of sweat and dedication went into building the temple a century ago.
The original immigrants from India came here to work in the lumber industry ... and the owner of the mill actually donated the lumber, he said.
These fellows carried this lumber for this Gurdwara from the mill — about a kilometre, maybe a little more — on their backs literally and fashioned it into this Gurdwara.
Peary said the temple is Abbotsford's only National Historic site.
We're so proud of this building and it reflects the true spirit of the founders of the Gurdwara and the great people, our great citizens, whose home is Abbotsford but whose hearts still reside in the Punjab.
He said Abbotsford's Sikh community still plays a huge role in the city.
The Sikh community is a major contributor to our city. We have over 25,000 people whose roots trace back to the Punjab, he said.
There's an amazing spirit in the Sikh community ... and they contribute enormously to our community.
Construction of the Abbotsford Gurdwara was completed in 1911, and the building officially opened in 1912.
Peary said monthly celebrations are planned throughout the year to celebrate the historic event.
