Marahau Travel Guide - New Zealand Magical Moments
Marahau Travel Guide - New Zealand Magical Moments
Marahau (Maori: Mārahau) is a very small settlement in the Tasman Region of the South Island of New Zealand, approximately 19 kilometres (12 mi) north of Motueka. Its location on Tasman Bay and at the southern entrance of Abel Tasman National Park makes it a popular holiday destination for those keen on outdoor activities. People access the Abel Tasman from Marahau by tramping, kayaking and water taxi. In Marahau itself, the beach offers sheltered and safe swimming, and horse trekking is popular throughout the busy summer season.
Marahau guards the eastern entrance to the Abel Tasman National Park. From the Abel Tasman Centre in Marahu you can book water taxis, hire kayaks, embark on a canyoning adventure or set off on the Coastal Walking Track. The sleepy settlement is the perfect place to get away from it all. Choose from a range of backpacker and self-contained accommodation, or the camping grounds which are popular over the summer holiday season.
Marahau's sprawling beach offers safe swimming and at low tide you can even see people wiggling their toes in the sand – but really, they are just digging for shellfish and cockles. For a memorable meal, make yourself comfortable at Hooked on Marahu, the sunny waterfront café and beer garden, with grand views of the beach and delicious local, organic dishes. For a casual lunch or dinner, you can't miss Fat Tui Burger, serving up world famous burgers from a caravan.
Abel Tasman National Park is a wilderness reserve at the north end of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for the Abel Tasman Coast Track, a long trail winding over beaches and across ridges between Marahau in the south and Wainui in the north. The headland at Separation Point is home to New Zealand fur seal colonies. Little blue penguins, bottlenose dolphins and seals inhabit the Tonga Island Marine Reserve.
Tokangawhā / Split Apple Rock is a geological rock formation in Tasman Bay off the northern coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Made of granite from the cretaceous, it is in the shape of an apple which has been cut in half. The cleft to produce two sides of the 'apple' was a naturally occurring joint.
The Abel Tasman Coast Track is a 60 kilometres long walking track within the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand. It extends from Marahau in the south to Wainui in the north, with many side tracks. The Ngarua Caves are a series of limestone caves in the Takaka Hill range south of Abel Tasman National Park. The caves are located close to Takaka Hill's summit, adjacent to State Highway 60 as it winds its way over the Takaka Hill between Motueka and Upper Takaka.
Tinline Bay is a cove and beach located within The Abel Tasman National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is located approximately 2 kilometres from the entrance to the park near Marahau and is the southern start of The Abel Tasman Inland Track. The town of Motueka in the South Island of New Zealand lies close to the mouth of the Motueka River, on the western shore of Tasman Bay. It is, after Richmond, the second largest centre in the Tasman Region

Nelson Lakes Angelus Hut Tramp & Able Tasman Coastal Walk - South Island New Zealand
Join Kiwi Princess Wears Hiking Boots on our spectacular Nelson Lakes Angelus Hut Tramp & Able Tasman Coastal Walk - in the South Island of New Zealand. Nelson Lakes offers superb walking opportunities for all.
We decided on a New Zealand Backcountry Tramp (navigational experience etc. required) in the Nelson Lakes National Park. starting from the picturesque Lake Rotoiti to Angelus Hut and Lake Angelus (1 of 5 glacial basins you'll pass) and exting down the uber steep Cedric Track to tranquil Lake Rotoroa and out by water taxi!!
From St Arnaud head up to Robert Ridge Carpark for a fabulous hike along Robert Ridge to the Angelus Basin and delightfully situated Angelus Hut (bookings essential in peak season) run by DOC.
The weather was changeable & moody. Whilst mist was our constant companion it loaned a mystical feel to this rugged New Zealand Landscape. It was a thrilling backcountry tramp and our most glam exit yet!
Nelson Lakes National Park is an attractive outdoor playground for boating, swimming, fishing and hunting.
We also hiked in the nearby Able Tasman National Park. The Able Tasman Coastal Walk (a formatted NZ Great Walk) requires average fittness & preparation. The track's well marked and distances between campsites/accomodation are relatively short. We decided on a single day return hike on the Able Tasman Coastal Track (due to the aftermath of Cyclone Gita). Day One - Marahau to Anchorage is 3.5 - 4 hours each way. Drop down to Appletree Bay on the way for a toilet stop, or a picnic and a swim (weather permitting).

Check out this amazing feeding frenzy! Sea birds, kahawai, barracuda and Hector's dolphins feasting on schools of anchovies right under the boat.
The Best Abel Tasman Day Trip
If you only have one day to spend in the Abel Tasman then you don't have to choose between walking the beautiful coastline, taking a bush walk or kayaking - you can do a little of it all by taking a cruise on one of Abel Tasman Charters' boats. You can enjoy the wildlife, snorkel, swim, go for a walk or take one of the kayaks for a ride. Lunch is served on board, so you'll really enjoy your day exploring the Abel Tasman. If you have more time, you could enjoy an overnight or multi day private charter.
ScenicNZ Abel Tasman Bus Services
ScenicNZ makes it easy to travel as a group, or on your own, anywhere within the Abel Tasman National Park.
Keep your schedule flexible and explore all of the top spots yourself with our simple timetabled bus service, or book a day trip package for a more guided experience of the region. We also have a charter option if you’re travelling in a large group.
Pick-up and drop-off hubs include the towns of Motueka, Kaiteriteri and Marahau. Services connect with water taxis, kayak operators, accommodation providers and several points along the Abel Tasman Coast Track.
Bark Bay camping
Bark Bay, an excellent campsite, is in the middle of the Abel Tasman. It's an easy walk to the Falls River Swing Bridge and a bunch of other cool spots. The walk from Marahau to Bark Bay is around 7 hours. The return to Marahau on an AquaTaxi takes about 45 minutes.
