Murals of the Abelardo Rodriguez Market, Mexico City, Mexico
The Mercado Abelardo Rodriguez, located in downtown Mexico City, about six blocks from the main plaza, was inaugurated in 1934, becoming at that time the best market in the capital. Its distinctive characteristic is the extensive collection of murals, which cover 1450 square meters of walls and ceilings, painted by students of famed muralist Diego Rivera under his direction. Although the original theme of the murals was the production of food, the result, reflecting the turbulence of the times, consisted of murals with a pointed revolutionary message. The painters were the Mexicans Ramon Alva, Angel Bracho, Raul Gamboa, Miguel Tzab, Antonio Pujol, and Pedro Rendon, and their American colleagues Pablo O'Higgins, Grace and Marion Greenwood, and Isamu Noguchi.
Pablo O’Higgins was born in the state of Utah (USA) in 1904. At the early age of 18, he traveled to Mexico to work under the famed muralist Diego Rivera, spending the rest of his life in Mexico, with occasional stints in the United States. In 1961, in recognition of O’Higgins’ extensive contributions to art and education, the Mexican government awarded him honorary Mexican citizenship. The murals of the Abelardo Rodriguez market, to be admired to this date, were accomplished under the able supervision of O’Higgins, as attested to by the Pablo O’Higgins Gallery of the People, located inside the Rodriguez market.
Isamu Noguchi in the Abelardo Rodriguez Market, Mexico City, Mexico
The Abelardo L. Rodriguez Market is a traditional public market located in the historic center of Mexico City, northeast of the main plaza, or Zocalo. It was built in 1934 as a prototype for a new, more modern marketplace. However, the market's most distinctive feature is the approximately 1,450 square meters of wall and ceiling space covered in murals. These murals were painted by students of famed artist Diego Rivera under his supervision. A significant feature of the mural work is the large-size wall sculpture by Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American artist, entitled History of Mexico, or also History as seen from Mexico in 1936.
Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was a Japanese-American artist and landscape architect whose artistic career spanned six decades, from the 1920’s onwards. Early in his career, he worked as an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum, the creator of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. In 1927, he signed up as an assistant to Constantin Brâncuși, one of the most influential sculptors of his time.
In 1936 Noguchi was hired by Diego Rivera to work on the murals
of the Abelardo Rodriguez market, where he produced a sculpture
22-m long and 2-m high, entitled History of Mexico. In its obituary for Noguchi, The New York Times called him “A versatile and prolific sculptor whose earthy stones and meditative gardens bridging East and West have become landmarks of 20th-century art.
