Old Photographs Of Abernethy Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Abernethy, Scottish Gaelic: Obar Neithich, a village in Perthshire, situated 8 miles south east of Perth.Abernethy may have been the seat of an early Pictish bishopric, its diocese extending westward along Strathearn. In the 12th century the bishop's seat was moved to Muthill, then Dunblane, but Abernethy remained the site of a small priory of Augustinian canons, founded 1272. This priory was suppressed in favour of a collegiate church under the patronage of the Douglas Earls of Angus, in the 15th century. Remains of the collegiate church survived until 1802. Abernethy was the site of the Treaty of Abernethy in 1072 between William the Conqueror and King Malcolm III of Scotland. The village has one of Scotland's two surviving Irish style round towers. Initially Abernethy railway station opened concurrently with the Edinburgh and Northern Railway on 18 May 1848. When the line was extended this first station was replaced by Abernethy on 18 July 1848. It became part of the North British Railway in 1865, and so into the London and North Eastern Railway. The line then passed on to the Scottish Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. The station was closed by the British Transport Commission on 19 September 1955. Although the line through the station site is still open for trains, as part of the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line between Perth and Ladybank, the station at Abernethy is closed
