Abisko on Snowshoes (Best Hike!) – Swedish Nature
Our second day in Abisko, in Swedish Lapland, couldn’t start any better. We go to the tourist station to ask some advice on possible day-long hikes with snowshoes in Abisko National Park and the guide suggests us his favourite: taking the chair lift to the top of Mount Nuolja, then following a trail that descends in the valley for about 4 km before turning back towards Abisko along the Kungsleden. The chair lift to Aurora Sky Station is quite expensive (190 SEK per person – about 18€ – in March 2019), but it is worth it, because it is the only way to reach the start of this beautiful trail in winter and the view from the top station is unique. This hike is quite easy, but either snowshoes or cross-country skis are necessary, as the snow can be quite deep in some parts, and you don’t want to ruin the paths for the skiers making asteroid-size holes with your boots ???? The only “tricky” passage is a river crossing, which may be feasible or not depending on ice conditions. We didn’t have any problems, but it was rather creepy to hear the water flowing just under our feet! The crossing can be avoided by taking a detour a few hundred metres before, so you can easily go to the river, check the ice and then go back if not safe.

Sweden Lapland Tree Hotel - Northern Lights & Dogsledding
???? P L E A S E • S U B S C R I B E - ???? ????
If you're interested in seeing the northern lights, visiting beautiful Lapland, or dog sledding in Sweden, then this is your guide to a trip of a lifetime.
This is your complete guide to the Arctic adventures in Swedish Lapland complete with dog sledding, Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), snowmobiling, & a trip to the iconic Tree Hotel (aka the treehouse hotel). Our adventure began as we flew through the main Swedish hub of Stockholm and up to Luleå, a city with a population of 80,000 that borders the Arctic Circle. As we stepped outside of Luleå airport, the crisp sub-zero temperatures made us gasp for air. Little did we know that the Arctic adventures ahead of us would be the thing that would truly take our breath away. We arrived at the Treehotel - which is very close to the Ice Hotel and just south of Abisko , a destination in itself, about an 80-minute drive from Luleå in the snow. After a gourmet dinner of arctic char and fresh blueberry dessert, it was time to check into our tree house. We hiked 800 meters up the wintery white path, following the little lanterns that illuminated the snowy hillside. We passed various tree houses of varying shapes and sizes until we arrived at our unique tree house, the UFO. The flying saucer nestled itself in the trees, 20 feet up above ground. Just as though we were in a Star Trek flick, the bottom of the UFO opened up and a staircase dropped down to the ground as if to say, “beam me up, Scotty.” We climbed the staircase and opened the doors to our flying Swedish saucer. From the moment we touched down in Swedish Lapland to our very last day, it snowed. While this may have been beautiful for photos, it’s horrible for viewing the Northern Lights. On our last day, there were rumors that we may get to see the dancing green fairy in the skies. We checked our Aurora app religiously and found out that we may be able to see the Northern Lights between the hours of 9 pm and 11 pm.
As we waited for the Aurora Borealis to flare, we stayed warm by doing push-ups and air squats, forcing our heart rates to soar. All of a sudden, Mother Nature opened her green eyes and pirouetted through the Arctic sky and our hearts seemed to stop. There they were – the Northern Lights – right before our very eyes. The world suddenly seemed to stop rotating, time seemed to slow, and we were there – present with our surroundings and connected to the universe. Scott and I immediately embraced, cognizant of the rarity of the moment and grateful for the opportunity to witness Mother Nature at her finest.
Thanks for watching! You guys rock :)

Abisko, Sweden V-log, 2017
This v-log will take you through glimpses of our trip to two small towns in northern Sweden, Kiruna & Abisko. Abisko has a total population of over 200 and lies within the Arctic Circle. This is one of the world's best places to catch the Northern Lights.
Most of our Swedish itinerary revolved around one central point, the little town of Abisko. Apparently, it was our best bet to catch the lights, and we did! Alongside, we got our daily dose of snowstorms, with a pinch of frozen waterfalls and streams. The best part was to share all these experiences with fellow travelers. We owe you big time, Abisko!
Video clips were recorded using the iPhone 7.
Sweden Summer Road Trip Episode 1: Abisko
Dreaming of heading north - really, really far north? Our friends Marina and Bowen headed north of the Arctic Circle to experience the midnight sun and breathtaking nature of Abisko National Park.
This is episode 1 of Sweden Summer Road Trip: a tour of all that Sweden has to offer to students over the summer, hosted by international students Marina from Brazil and Bowen from China. Check back for new episodes every Friday in July at 16:00 CET!
Abisko travel facts:
- Reach Abisko by night train (book via SJ) or flight to Kiruna followed by a bus or train transfer.
- Hiking is best during the summer season (June-August). The rest of the year, conditions will be cold and often snowy (though you can ski or snowshoe then!).
- Kungsleden, arguably Sweden’s most famous hiking trail, starts in Abisko. It’s easy to plan a trip starting in Abisko, staying overnight in inexpensive cabins or camping along the trail. STF Abisko Mountain Station’s website has all the practical info you need on planning your visit and hike.
- Every year, the Fjällräven Classic takes place starting in Abisko: a group of thousands of hikers hiking the first section of Kungsleden together. Joining in is an unforgettable experience!
