Прогулка в г. Турку, культурной столице Европы 2011.mpg
Cultural shock! This is what Turku - European Capital of Culture this year offers creative people! Such a number of interesting art objects per square meter should still be looked for! Visiting all of them requires more than one day. Turku destroys the stereotype of Finns being distant and antisocial. Here we were faced with unusual frankness, cordiality and hospitality. This applies both to employees of the organizing committee, and citizens, who were always ready to help perplexed tourists. On our first evening we went to jazz club, where we met remarkable woman, Gretta. When she found out that it was our first visit to Turku, she gladly volunteered to be our guide. We started оur walk through the cultural capital of Europe with the Central Library quarter. This quarter combines antiquety and modernity and is filled with the culture in many forms and there you can spend your time reading, studying art or just a distract from the city fuss. In one of the premises of this quarter, we found a very interesting exhibition - retrospective of the famous Finnish architect, who is specialized on modern art - Alvar Aalto. Library café takes the tables out in the courtyard when the weather is fine, and , surprisingly, has a range of alcohol drinks! Indeed, it is so nice to spend your time reading a good book or disputing about art while drinking mild wine! Visitors are surprised by conceptually of Yards of Turku. In summer almost all these yards turn into cafes, we even found a wooden stage for summer performances in one. It is said that the atmosphere and the mentality of Turku are similar to Odessa. But there is no way you can see a bicycle, parked in the middle of icy river in Odessa. People who likes shopping also won't be disappointed. Huge shopping center with lots of cafes and restaurants, as well as the famous STOKMANN, may divert you attention from cultural and intellectual state of mind. One of the most interesting art objects of the city consists of two parts: the historical and archaeological museum and the Museum of Modern Art ABOA VETUS & ARS NOVA. We have visited the first one and it seemed like a time travel to the ruins of the medieval Monastery quarter of Turku. Then, going up higher, we saw the real image of citizens' life at that time on a huge model created by artists with great sense of humor. A large modern building of The Art Museum WAM is located in a large modern building on the bank of the river Aura. It is famous for its bold experimental art projects. It is also a Center of Photography, which frankly did not surprise me at all. But the vast space of the museum is shoking, because of its exposition named MULTIFACED DEATH. Time frames of the exhibited pieces of art extends from the end of the 19th century till modern days. When Turku is covered by twilight, it becomes especially beautiful! It was time to walk around and ... visit the nearest pub. People have very special and even unusual attitude to these pubs. Three of most famous among them were located in former bank, post and ... School! We visited this former school. The proximity of student desks and teacher's board on the wall did not bother visitors. Perhaps some of them had even attended this school. And now enjoy high-quality beer, reminiscing adolescence. It was very to stay at the hotel, which is close to the places of interest. It's time to rest a bit before evening adventures. There is a Hotel in Turku which is still not well-known among Russian tourists. «Park Hotel» which is situated in the central but quiet part of the city and is considered to be the best designed hotel in Finland. But the night has not come yet! And on our way to a jazz club MONK, we were looking at luminous photo exhibition, displayed in the street! Such a great idea! Nice atmosphere, friendly faces and acquaintance with Finnish jazz displayed by charismatic leading singers of DIRTY HARRY SEXTET was waiting for us in the jazz-club.

Turku Travel Guide - Finland Memorable Experience
Turku Travel Guide - Finland Memorable Experience
Turku (Swedish: Åbo) is a city in the Southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of Aura River. It is within the region of Finland Proper in the Province of Western Finland. It is believed that Turku came into existence during the end of 13th century which makes it the oldest city in Finland.
Turku was for a long time the most important population center in Finland: it was the first capital city of Finland from 1809 to 1812 and continued to be the largest city by population in Finland until the end of the 1840s. Nowadays its significance nationwide is not the same as it used to be, but Turku is a regional capital and important location for business and culture in Northern Europe.
Turku has approximately 175 000 inhabitants, and was the most important city in Finland from the 1300s until 1812, until the Russians moved the capital to Helsinki (closer to Russia and further from Sweden). Turku remained Finland's main city for a while after, but its ambitions were dealt a death blow in 1827, when a raging fire destroyed most of the city.
Today's Turku remains the third largest city in Finland, after the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area and Tampere. Some of the main attractions of Turku are its history and the great natural beauty of the neighboring archipelago. Turku is at its best during the summertime, and hosts a great number of festivals, including rock festivals, chamber music festivals and a faire.
Turku has an excellent public transportation system called Föli, and its buses can reach nearly every corner of the city. The city centre and nearby suburbs have also Föli city bikes. The vast majority of the city's sights are within two kilometres of the Kauppatori market square that is considered as the heart of the city. The river Aura passes through the center of the city, and its banks are very popular for walking along on, allowing for a pleasant stroll from, say, the city centre to the Turku Castle.
For proper restaurant meals, expect to pay €10-€30 - lower end with some simple pasta or soup with water or a soft drink, and the higher end with a high-grade steak meal with good wine. For fast food or pizzeria meals, you will generally need to pay under €10. Burger meals are around €5-€8 (including drink and fries), kebabs and pizzas are about the same.
Generally, proper restaurants are open until 10-11PM, on weekends maybe an hour longer. There are no proper restaurants open in Turku after midnight. Fast food chains, pizzerias and other such places are open later at night, some as late as 3-5AM. In some establishments, the bar may remain open for drinks even though the kitchen has closed and no food is available.
Contemporary Turku is even more enticing, a hotbed of experimental art and vibrant music festivals, designer boutiques and innovative restaurants. University students populate the cafes and clubs, keeping the place buzzing. Through the age-old network of bustling streets and squares, the Aurajoki meanders picturesquely, heading out to sea. For nature lovers, Turku is the gateway to the glorious Turku Archipelago. As one of the country's main ports of entry (many visitors arrive by ferry from Sweden and Åland), it's a fabulous introduction to mainland Finland.
