Australian Aboriginal art is art made by the Indigenous peoples of Australia
Dot painting consists of various paint colours like yellow (the sun), brown (the soil), red (desert sand) and white (the clouds and the sky). These are traditional Aboriginal colors. Dot paintings can be painted on anything though in aboriginal times they used to paint dot pictures on rocks, caves etc. Mostly Indigenous Australians painted nature like animals or lakes and of course, the dreamtime.
Aboriginal people in australia used to paint stories and legends on caves and rocks to represent their religion.
Rock art, including painting and engraving or carving, can be found at sites around Australia. Rock paintings appear on caves in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Aboriginal rock art has been around for a long period of time, with the oldest examples, in Western Australia's Pilbara region, and the Olary district of South Australia, estimated to be up to around 40,000 years old.
Bark paintings are regarded as fine art, and the finest art command high prices on the international art markets. The best artists are recognized annually in the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award.

Story:
Thomas 'first contact' story is extraordinary. A group of nine Pintupi people who had lived a traditional lifestyle near Lake Mackay in the Gibson Desert, dramatically made contact in 1984 with their relatives near Kiwirrkurra. The community quickly realised that the group were relatives who had been left behind in the desert twenty years earlier. The family group were four brothers, three sisters and two mothers. The boys were in their teens - one subsequently returned to the desert, and three have gone on to become well known artists - Walimpirrnga, Walala, and Thomas Tjapaltjarri. This is his story.

About artist
Lily Kelly Napangardi (Napangati) was born in approximately 1948 at Haasts Bluff in Central Australia. Lily Kelly is a Luritja and Warlpiri speaker and a highly distinguished Aboriginal artist. Lily grew up living in the bush until in the 1960's where as a young girl her family moved to the settlement of Papunya, several hours from Alice Springs in Central Australia. As an adult she then later moved to Watiyawanu (Mount Liebig) approximately 3 hours west of Alice Springs.
She is a highly respected senior law woman in her community and the custodian over the Women's Dreaming stories associated with her traditional country around Kunajarrayi (Mount Nicker). Lily began painting in 1986 and worked closely with Papunya Tula Artists for several years. Her paintings are very innovative interpretations of her country. She later then worked closely with Watiyawanu Artists of Yamunturrngu.
In 2006 she was named as one of Australia's 50 most collectable artists by the Australia Art Collector Magazine which further cemented her as one of Australia's most sought after and collectable Aboriginal artists. The Australian Indigenous Art Market has her rated as the 77th most collectable aboriginal artist of all time.
Lily's paintings portray the depiction of the Tali (sand hills) located near her homelands. The microscopic dots show the impact of the rain and the wind as it moves across the countryside. This story was passed to her by her father and the sand hills (Tali) are a site of significance for the artist and her family.

Video Transcript:
Fish in Australian Art is a little bit of an unconventional look at Australian art history. It brings together an amazing selection of Australian artists through indigenous rock paintings to contemporary multimedia artists, and they are all linked by fish, which I think for me is one of the most fascinating aspects of this exhibition.
I'm loving it. It's very exciting. You work on something like this for a year and I think it's rich and people are saying they are going to come back and there's a lot of stories here.
So when people come to see this exhibition, they will begin by seeing indigenous art, seeing the way that indigenous people have connected with fish and the importance that fish and fishing have been to their culture. And it takes it through to modern art, artists like William Dobell, Arthur Boyd, Margaret Olley; really amazing artists.
For me it's the stories, there are just wonderfully humorous and engaging stories that are human stories within the exhibition, and I am hoping people go and share those and more people will come as a result.
I think a lot of people when they look at the museum think that it's just about ships and boats, and the reality is it's very different, we have a range of exhibitions, and art and maritime heritage in art is just one of those fascinating areas that we explore.
