Home of our politicians and maybe the most well planned out city in the world. The story goes that when deciding on a National Capital, those in Sydney and Melbourne wouldn't give an inch, so decided to locate a city between them.
Arrived in Canberra by the red eye Thursday night. You could spend a week in Canberra just seeing exhibitions. You can visit the National Gallery, the National Museum, the National Library, the National Science and Technology Centre, Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, the Australian War Museum, the National film and sound archives, the national museum of erotica etc etc, I think you get the picture!
Canberra is the first location where a story has fallen through. I wanted to take a light hearted look at Canberra's sex and drug laws, which are the most liberal in Australia. I tried to set up an interview with a Mistress, but had great difficultly getting a response. Strange...
My back up story is on the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. Although you won't find it listed on any maps, it has been located at the front gardens of Old Parliament House for close on 50 years.
I spoke with Darren Bloomfield, the appointed keeper of the Sacred fire.

Aboriginal Tent Embassy - Canberra, ACT, Australia
Stock Footage of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy located on the lawn of Old Parliament House, Canberra, ACT, Australia.
The Aboriginal Tent Embassy was set up in 1972, and after moving to a number of locations around Canberra, remains out the front of Old Parliament House. The Embassy claims to represent the political interests of Australian Aborigines. The Australian Government does not recognise the Aboriginal Tent Embassy as an official embassy.
The rights which have typically been associated with protect at the site include:
- Land rights
- Mining rights
- Legal title of land
- Compensation for land taken from Aboriginals upon European settlement
- The preservation of sacred sites around Australia
The presence of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy at the Old Parliament House has been controversial, and there have been calls for its removal by Aboriginal and non-Aboroginal groups, which is highly contentious. There are currently activists living on the site.

The establishment of the Aboriginal Embassy on the lawns in front of Parliament House (now old parliament house) in 1972.
On 26 January 1972, four Aboriginal men (Ghillar, Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Tony Coorey and Bertie Williams) arrived in Canberra from Sydney to establish the Aboriginal Embassy by planting a beach umbrella on the lawn in front of Parliament House (now Old Parliament House) - Sadly, only Ghillar has survived to this day but the movement quickly escalated.

There are many issues colliding, Land and the economic struggle with Mining companies is among the hottest causing much economic grievance, uncertainty and fear among Indigenous Communities. While many people from the NT came to Canberra because of the NT Intervention, others from Perth, WA, Qld and SA came because of their fears about how the resources boom is playing out.
Land and it's relationship to Indigenous peoples sits at the underbelly of what is percolating at ground levels in different regions of Australia. Indigenous people call for Native Title Reform tover their access to land and profits over the way are being dealt.
