Windsurfing Soma Bay - Surfmotion (Red Sea, Egypt)
Windsurfing - Soma Bay – Surfmotion, Red Sea - Egypt , Africa
Back in February I went to Surfmotion, Soma Bay (Red Sea, Egypt) for a good week of windsurfing. Soma Bay is a fantastic spot and Peter Müller runs his surfstation Surfmotion with passion and quality! He saluted me with ‘MOIN’ and my heart made some jumps, because this is how to greet friends in the part of Germany where I was born. Beautify that all his staff speaks English and they even wish you ‘viel spass’ on the water in German! Just great to feel the family spirit at the station. I love the surfboys helping you to bring your gear to the water and taking it over after some good runs of windsurf…. Yes, ladies like this!
There is a big sail house where you can rig/tune your gear on carpet in the shadow. They even vacuum clean it every day. There is room to stall your own gear for a good price and good gear to rent. And they have a taxi service to pick you up from the airport at a fee lower than that of the travel organisation. But most of all, I enjoyed the company and that Peter joins with windsurfing. In summary, it is the best surf station that I have visited so far! Relaxed, good quality, good service.
The spot is excellent for slalom / speed / light wind / foil / formula on flat water / small chop. In the bay you feel safe, I haven’t thought of sharks at all. So, I could enjoy surfing and looking out for some great turtles instead of hearing the scary shark tune in my head. There is good variation to surf, in the bay with shorter runs and jibes, and trips to a great speed strip, and also out of the reef. I haven’t seen it all during one week.
We surfed every day! Especially early in the mornings there is good wind!
Surfmotion has housephotografers! They are out every day and taking lots of picture, in really good quality. At the end of the day you can watch all pictures and for a FANTASTIC price you can put all your pics on your own stick. One day we had a photographer in the parachute taking pictures from above. Need I say more??? Just Awesome.
We stayed in Palm Royale Soma Bay, the hotel near the surfstation. This place is nice, clean and friendly. Nice to not have to ware an all-inclusive tag around your wrist.
I tested the new GUNSAILS BOW 8,7 and my new wetsuit by Soöruz Surfwear Benelux. Just perfect! What more can I say.
If you are looking for a relaxed windsurf vacation, also with your family, and you want to make new friends, I can absolutely recommend Soma Bay and Surfmotion!! For beginners and advanced level.
Have fun in life and windsurfing!

Liveaboard in Red Sea (Classic North / Sinai: Egypt)
NORTHERN LIVEABOARD ROUTE in the South Moon : dive the best sites in Ras Mohamed and Tiran including the Thistlegorm and Dunraven
Day 0: Embarkation in Sharm el Sheikh
Day 1: Check dive at Temple or Ras Katy, Ras Mohamed, Beacon Rock, Night Dive
Day 2: Dunraven, Small Crack, Wreck of the Thistlegorm, Night Dive
Day 3: Thistlegorm, Shag Rock, Alternatives, Night Dive
Day 4: Ras Mohamed: Shark & Yolanda Reef, Jackfish Alley, Gordon Reef, Night Dive
Day 5: Straights of Tiran: Jackson, Woodhouse, Laguna, Night Dive
Day 6: Thomas Reef, Gordon, Ras Um Sid
Day 7: Disembarkation in Sharm el Sheikh
DIVE SITES:
Ras Katy
Ras Katy is located at only few minutes from Travco Jetty, the main harbor of Sharm el Sheikh, and from where all our boats in Sharm are departing.
Is a very nice and easy shallow dive, ideal for the first dive in the Red Sea. It is ideal as well for night dives.
Temple
Just around the promontory of Ras Um Seid lies Temple dive site. Temple is so-named because here you will find three coral pillars resembling the columns of a classical temple. The pillars descend to a depth of 30m. Reef fauna commonly seen here include butterfly fish, parrot fish, bat fish and lionfish. You may also see a Napoleon Wrasse.
Ras Um Sid
Ras Umm Sid is the name of the promontory with a high lighthouse that marks the beginning of the Strait of Tiran on the western coast. The diving site, easily accessible by land, is immediately east of the lighthouse, opposite the famous Italian restaurant El-Fanar and the African Divers centre. It is renowned for the extraordinary proliferation of gorgonians (Subergorgia hicksoni) that create a veritable forest here, the most beautiful in all the northern Red Sea.
Shark & Jolanda Reef
Ras Mohammed is a peninsula of land jutting out into the Red Sea at the southernmost point of the Sinai Peninsula. Most of the Ras Mohammed Peninsula is, in fact, a raised reef plate, indicating that the sea level was once higher than it is today. In 1983 Ras Mohammed was given National Park status, the area the park covers was increased in 1989 to include much of the surrounding seas. There are some 1,000 species of fish and 150 species of coral to be found in the waters here, hence the need for preservation.
Dunraven - Beacon Rock
Built in Newcastle in 1873, this British steamer met her end in 1876 while bound for Bombay with a cargo of timber and cotton, which were lost in the ship wreck when the ship caught fire. She lies upside-down in 15 – 29.5 metres depth. The dive starts at the stern and takes you inside the hull where you can see Crocodilefish. You can also expect to see some groupers, Lionfish and schools of Glassfish. Above the bow you can enjoy a coral garden at 10 – 5 metres as you ascend from your dive.
Small Crack
Small Crack is a small break in the Sha’ab Mahmud reef system and is navigable by small dive boats only. The passage is 6m deep and 2-3m across with reef walls on both sides. Both hard and soft corals abound here – you can see Gorgonian fans, porites, salad coral and Acropora as well as anemones and their omni-present anemonefish. There is also a small eel garden at a depth of 19m and many species of reef fauna. Pelagic fish also frequent the site.
Wreck of the Thistlegorm
Lying some 31 miles from Sharm El Sheikh, the Thistlegorm is a popular site often visited by divers on day trips as well as liveaboard boats. Built in 1940, the Thistlegorm was a sizeable British transport ship. Early one morning in October 1941 while moored at Sha’ab Ali, she was struck by German bombers and sank. She was carrying a cargo of munitions, anti-tank mines, motorcycles, Bedford trucks, spare parts, tyres and medicines amongst other things for the British troops in North Africa. She lies at depths of between 16 and 33 metres and both the ship and her cargo are very well preserved, making her arguably the best wreck dive in the Red Sea. Not only you will you enjoy seeing a ship and cargo so amazingly intact, you will also see plenty of marine life in and around the vessel making the Thistlegorm, effectively, an artificial reef!
Thomas Reef
Believed to be one of the best dive sites in the northern Red Sea, only drift dives are possible here as there are no moorings. Here you will see a variety of corals including gorgonians, colonies of black coral and large Alcyonarians. It is possible to circumnavigate the entire reef on your dive, weather and currents, permitting. You can expect to see many reef fish including Angelfish and groupers as well as pelagic fish e.g. barracuda and the Whitetip Reef Shark.

Sinai Classic Red sea liveaboard safari on Snefro Pearl: Temple, Jackfish Alley, Beacon Rock Day 1&2
Music: epidemicsound.com
We finish off our last day in Dahab with snorkeling and relaxing until our shuttle collects us at 3pm, then head off to the marina in Sharm el-Sheikh. Because boats may not sail at night, we spend the first evening in the marina, before heading out for our first three dives of the trip. We did the Sinai classic route with the King Snefro fleet on the Snefro Pearl.
Our dives on the first day were Temple, Jackfish Alley and Beacon rock Coral Garden
We did return to shore for 2 hours with a fellow diver suffering severe tooth ache during a dive, this was due to a filling coming undone. Following medication the issue didn't arise again.
The boat has four levels. The lowest level has cabins, above being the living room, kitchen and dive deck. Above the dive deck are more cabins as well as a relaxation area. The top deck is a sun deck. Both the dive deck and relaxation deck has a full bathroom facility outside (enclosed).
BATHROOM TIPS:
The bathrooms are limited with a basin, toilet, shower head and bidet in a 1.5m x 0.5m room. This means showering wets everything. My room mate and I circumvented this problem by using the showers on the outer decks at night or after our last dive, this keeps the cabin bathroom dry and only for brushing teeth and using the toilet.
Speaking of the toilet, NO toilet paper may be FLUSHED. Best get used to using a bidet, dabbing dry with paper and throwing it in the bin to avoid bad smells. Flushing the paper can clog the sewerage system of the boat.
The cabins are cleaned and made up during each dive and they also empty the toilet paper bin during this time.
One Day In Ras Mohamed - South Sinai, Egypt
Ras Mohamed is definitely one of my favourite places in Sharm el Sheikh!
Stunning views all around, an out-of-this-world experience both above and below sea level, peace and tranquility to calm even the busiest mind…
Scuba diving, snorkelling or just a picnic by the sea, it seems to offer a fantastic experience on every front!
Here’s a short video showing a bit of the magical beauty of this incredible place! Special thanks to Andrew Mackenzie for some of the awesome shots!

Winter rain brings spring flowers and a return of nomads to the desert
It's been a wet winter in Sinai, with heavy rain falling over much of the southern part of the peninsula.
Now its spring and the rare plants are blooming once again.
Good news for both goats and bedouin.
Mostly settled in towns, the rain allows them to return to the desert and their traditional lifestyle.
Families pack up their pick up trucks with rugs, tents and the all important goats and head into the desert.
Fresh green shoots await the goats and that means extra rich milk for their owners.
This year God provided us with rain and we will go to stay in the spring so that our goats can eat explains Eid Abu Aouda, a Bedouin from Dahab.
The nomadic tradition was under threat of extinction, as many bedouin settled in towns and found work in the tourism industry.
However tourism has suffered in recent years due to unrest in Egypt, bringing financial hardship to many, but the return of the rains after several years of drought, means the bedouin are only too happy to pack up and return to their nomadic life, free from money concerns.
There is no tourism and work is halted for everybody. We can't feed our flocks, we can hardly feed our children so we can't feed our goats adds Abu Aouda.
In towns like Dahab, there is nowhere for the goats to graze, the Bedouin feed their goats with fruit and vegetable scraps and buy stacks of Alfalfa which arrives from the Nile delta in a truck.
The word spring, in Arabic Rabea, is also used to describe areas of the desert where plants flourish, mostly at an altitude of 1000-1500 meters above sea level, where the weather remains cool enough for the plants to thrive.
The Bedouin camp in settlements of three or four families.
In the early morning, the women of the village take the flocks of sheep and goats to the grazing spots.
The animals eat plenty of fresh desert shrubs and in turn provide the Bedouin with milk.
Salah Abu Eissa is a Bedouin from Dahab. He originally works as a desert guide but with the lack of work, he and his family are living off the land in the desert, just as their ancestors did.
He says it is a chance to remember the old ways:
We come to the spring (the green areas) because, first of all, the goats in towns require a lot of food and we exhaust ourselves in town to get food for the goats. So in the spring, firstly, the plants are great for the milk, ghee and butter and also so we Bedouin don't forget our old culture and tradition.
They are not entirely self-sufficient, bringing staples like rice with them from town and occasional visits from relatives stock up their supplies.
At sunset, the flocks return to the settlement and the Bedouin milk them before enclosing them in their pen for the night.
Some of the milk is consumed immediately and the rest is stored in a saan, a goat stomach.
The rennet from the lining of the goat stomach curdles the milk and the Bedouin make cheese and butter from it.
A Bedouin woman churns a goat stomach full of milk to obtain butter.
After a few minutes she extracts a little bit of butter. We put milk in this goat stomach and churn it until it makes butter. The butter separates from the milk. After we've extracted the butter we're left with milk called 'rayeb milk'. It's sour but it's great, says Salah Abu Eissa before drinking a few small glasses of rayeb milk.
Now there are some plants that people don't recognise or they have forgotten about them because in Sinai there was no rain and therefore few plants. But this year, thank God, adds Abu Eissa.
Evidence of a rainy winter is visible in the landscape.
From a distance, shrubs growing in the mountains give a green tint to the rocks and flowers like wild chamomile and cotton thistle are blooming amongst sand and stones.

Ocean Blue Holes of Andros Bahamas - Best Travel Destination
Divers explore an underwater cave system on Andros Island in the Bahamas. Offshore flooded caves, called ocean blue holes, are extensions of the sea, subject to the same heavy tides and host to many of the same species found in the surrounding waters. The blue holes of the Bahamas yield a scientific trove that may even shed light on life beyond Earth. Different from many, it is an opening in the Andros wall, a spot where the wall has collapsed into a cavern/cave system. This huge system can be approached on many levels. Two primary openings at 60 feet lead into one cavern. Another tunnel leads into a massive room with the ceiling at 140 feet and the floor at 320 feet. For very advanced or professional divers, the Level III dive enters a fracture in the wall at 190 feet, well above the system's maximum depth, and leads into the most complex portion of the system. Hike to Mt. Sinai's Summit | Sinai Peninsula | Egypt | We.Are.Wanderful
Retracing Moses' Steps In A Once-In-A-Lifetime Spiritual Journey
NOVEMBER 11, 2010—AT ONE o’clock in the morning about 3 dozens of us from our group of 50+ Filipino pilgrims started our attempt to hike to the summit of Mt. Sinai (2,640+ MASL) from the St. Catherine Monastery in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Unknown to us until a few hours later, at least a thousand other people from all over the world were hiking to the summit that very same morning. It was, after all, a typical day in Mt. Sinai.
The Sinai Peninsula is for most parts, a desert. Mount Sinai, at 2,640+ meters above sea level, is quite a high-altitude place. Between 1am to 5am, temperatures can go down to 5-10 degrees Celsius. It was a long and chilly hike.
It was pitch black, too. Although some of us had flashlights and head lamps, we could see only a few meters in any direction. We didn’t know how wide a trail we were walking on, or how high the cliffs beside the trail are.
We could see other groups of hikers ahead of us and behind through the faint light from their flashlights and headlamps. They were like fireflies moving together in small groups following a seemingly invisible path up the mountain.
There are basically two ways to hike to the summit of Mt. Sinai. You can walk, or you can hire a local Bedouin guide with his camel and ride to the summit in style.
We opted to walk to fully experience the hike. Hiring a Bedouin guide and his camel was not really that expensive, but we needed to stay together with our group at all times. Also we were told that if you are not used to it, riding a camel, especially in a high-altitude hike, could be a very dizzying experience.
To most Christians like us, a hike to Mount Sinai’s summit is more than just an ordinary mountain hike. It is a spiritual experience. When we hear of Sinai we automatically associate it with the biblical Moses and the story of the Ten Commandments.
Our hike to Mount Sinai on November 11, 2010 WAS one such spiritual experience. I’m not very good at articulating spiritual experiences but I can tell you that it was one of the most profound spiritual experiences I ever had.
This is a short slideshow video of our photos during our hike to MT. SINAI. Enjoy watching.
