Description
Abraham Lake has a surface area of 53.7 km2 (20.7 sq mi) and a length of 32 km (20 mi). Although man-made, the lake has the blue color of other glacial lakes in the Rocky Mountains, which is caused by rock flour as in other glacial lakes.
Abraham Mountain, Elliott Peak, and the Cline River Heliport are located on the western shore of the lake. Mount Michener is situated on the eastern shore. Mount Ernest Ross lies at the southern tip of the lake.
History
Abraham Lake was created by the former Calgary Power Company, now called TransAlta, in 1972, with the construction of the Bighorn Dam.The lake was built on the upper course of the North Saskatchewan River, in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, and lines David Thompson Highway between Saskatchewan River Crossing and Nordegg.
The Government of Alberta sponsored a contest to name the lake in February 1972, during the final stages of construction of the Bighorn Dam. Students across the province were asked to submit names taking into consideration historical significance, prominent persons, geography and topography, and the value of the lake. It was named for Silas Abraham, an inhabitant of the Saskatchewan River valley in the nineteenth century.
Phenomenon
Bubbles on frozen Abraham Lake
Trapped methane causes frozen bubbles to form under the ice on the lake's surface. This phenomenon results when decaying plants on the lake bed release methane gas, which creates bubbles that become trapped within the ice, in suspended animation, just below the surface as the lake begins to freeze. The visual effects formed by the resulting stacks of bubbles, frozen while rising toward the surface, combined with the clear blue water, have made Abraham Lake a popular destination for photographers and nature observers.

The Nordegg Mine site very brief
This was the guided tour of the Mine, over years of vandalism they closed it off so you can't roam around alone. this history of Nordegg dates back to 1911 when a small camp was established and coal production started in 1912. Out of 5 coal seams only 2 were mined, No 2 and No 3 mine, they averaged 7.75 feet and 15.92 feet thick respectively. they were separated by about 123 feet of rock. they dipped at an angle of 12 degrees and were worked by underground room and pillar methods. Production peaked at 500000 tons in 1923.
on Oct 31, 1941 a large underground explosion in the No3 mine killed 29 miners, the mine operated until 1955 due to the decrease in coal, the reserves at Nordegg had not been exhausted

Frozen Air Bubbles in Abraham Lake:
Lake Abraham is an artificial lake on North Saskatchewan River in western Alberta, Canada. The lake was created in 1972, with the construction of the Bighorn Dam, and named after Silas Abraham, an inhabitant of the Saskatchewan River valley in the nineteenth century.
Abraham Lake is home to a rare phenomenon where bubbles get frozen right underneath its surface. They're often referred to as ice bubbles or frozen bubbles. This has made the lake famous among photographers.

Rocky to Nordegg, Alberta - Timelapse
Rocky Mountain House to Nordegg, Alberta on highway 11. Gateway to the Rocky Mountains from central Alberta.
Nordegg is a hamlet in west-central Alberta, Canada within Clearwater County. It is located in the North Saskatchewan River valley in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, just east of the intersection of the David Thompson Highway and the Highway 734 spur of the Bighorn Highway (the Forestry Trunk Road). A former coal-mining town, it was named after Martin Nordegg and the name probably means North Corner in a German dialect.
Rocky Mountain House is a town in west-central Alberta, Canada located approximately 77 km (48 mi) west of the City of Red Deer at the confluence of the Clearwater and North Saskatchewan Rivers, and at the crossroads of Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) and Highway 11 (David Thompson Highway). The surrounding Clearwater County's administration office is located in Rocky Mountain House.
Alberta Provincial Highway No. 11, commonly referred to as Highway 11 and officially named the David Thompson Highway, is a 318-kilometre-long (198 mi) long highway in central Alberta, Canada that connects Red Deer and Sylvan Lake to Highway 93 near Mount Sarbach. It runs from Saskatchewan River Crossing in Banff National Park east through Nordegg, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer until it connects with Highway 12 near Nevis. The highway is named after David Thompson, a British-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and map-maker who explored the area between Rocky Mountain House and Kootenae House (near present-day Invermere, British Columbia) through Howse Pass.
Crescent Falls with Pursuit Adventures in DTCountry
Stephen and Angelina visit Crescent Falls in David Thompson Country on a tour with Pursuit Adventures. Here is part two of the tour at Abraham Lake.
Crescent Falls is on the Bighorn River which flows into the North Saskatchewan River.
The Drive on the David Thompson Highway through Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg to Abraham Lake is very scenic and you can often take pictures of bighorn sheep or feral horses.
People looking for services in the area can find them in Nordegg or Rocky Mountain House. In the winter Nordegg has 2 gas stations, a restaurant, hotel and many cabins or lodges to rent. In the summer there are even more services.
