Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery - Memorial Day 2013
The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois covers 982 acres. When fully completed, it will provide 400,000 burial spaces. The cemetery was dedicated in 1999 by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. The cemetery is on the grounds of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant site, which was formerly known as the Joliet Arsenal.

The cemetery as of right now has only 3 famous interments and they are Theodore Hyatt, Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. John Edward Johnny Carter, Vocalist member of the Rhythm and Blues groups The Flamingos and The Dells. And George Edward Sangmeister, US Congressman. Elected to represent Illinois' 4th and 11th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1989 to 1995. He was also a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives from 1973 to 1977, the Illinois State Senate from 1977 to 1987, and was an unsuccessful candidate in the primary for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois in 1986. Veteran of US Army Korean War. Note: He was instrumental in the acquisition of 982 acres from the former Joliet Arsenal and its redevelopment as the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America is a nationwide event in the U.S., honoring its Veterans by placing wreaths on their graves during the second week in December. In its 9 years it has grown to placing 19,000 wreaths on the graves of Veterans in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood IL.

Memorial Day, 2013
The Malcolm J. Mayo VFW Post 5422, Wilmington, observed Memorial Day with parade and ceremony on Saturday, May 25, and then members of its honor guard participated in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery's Memorial Day event on Monday, May 27. Highlights of the Wilmington presentation included an appearance by the Grillin' for Freedom volunteers who provided a picnic; the National Anthem rendered by Don Parrish; patriotic music by the Wilmington Community Band; a few words by veteran Roger Hileman and a performance by re-enactor Walt Homan, a Civil War soldier who spoke about his friend Enoch P. Smith, who was a member of the Illinois 100th. Visitors to the national cemetery were treated to performances by the Joliet American Legion Band; Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln as portrayed by Max and Donna Daniels; and a representation of the American military through the ages by the American Military Timeline and Sons and Daughters in the Service.

RONALD A. KIRK LAS VEGAS, NV
Ronald A. Kirk, age 46, of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Valparaiso, IN and South Chicago Heights, IL, passed away on March 10, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV. He will be joining his Grandma and Grandpa Ross, various aunts and uncles, and friends. He was the dearest son to Glenna Hartford (Kirk) of Chicago, IL and Darrell Sr. and Mary Kirk of Portage, IN. Ronald was the loving brother to Darrell Jr. (Beth Devereaux) Kirk of Seattle, WA, Susan (Pete) Dres of Valparaiso, IN and Garnett (Jennifer Palmer) Kirk of Cedar Lake, IN. He was also a brother to Dawn Stover, Kim (Steve) Corley, Debbie (Stover) Hiland, Emma (Kirk) Kopek, James Kirk; and a beloved nephew to his dear aunt Blanche. He was also the fond uncle to various nieces and nephews. The visitation has been set for Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2:00-8:00 PM at the Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt.30 and Pleasant Springs Lane) Dyer, IN. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Smits Funeral Home. A funeral procession will follow immediately to the final resting place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery - Elwood, IL. Mr. Kirk served as a United States Marine, was a former Ford Motor Company employee at the Ford Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, IL, and was a history major at UNLV. He was an eccentric runner and a proud member of the international running club, Hash House Harriers. He laid many trails and took part in many hashes across the country. He was an avid runner, outdoorsman, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and hasher, who etched a lasting effect on everyone he met. A 2012 Tour of Oakwood Cemetery!
Oakwood Cemetery just across the woods from the Ellwood House in DeKalb, Illinois is said to have a burial that if you sit on top of it......you get pushed off. I have heard this rumor about other cemeteries with similar burials......you make the call.
