Manchester was a very important ally to Abraham Lincoln’s Union during the American Civil War. As the largest processor of cotton in the world, Manchester took a strong moral and political stance by choosing to boycott Southern Cotton in protest against the use of slave labour.
This was not an easy decision to make and led to the Lancashire Cotton Famine, which saw many cotton workers lose their jobs and struggle to feed their families. Lincoln wrote a letter to thank the people of Manchester for their support. Later an American couple donated the statue as a reminder of the link between Manchester and the United States.

Abraham Lincoln Statue: Jon & Chris in DC - Season 3 Episode 2
Abraham Lincoln Statue at the District of Columbia Court of Appeals - Washington, D.C.
Within days of Lincoln's assassination on April 15,1865, Washington residents began a subscription to raise money for a memorial to the president. John T. Ford, manager of Ford's Theatre, raised the largest amount, $1,800 from a benefit performance at his theater.
Sculpted by Lott Flannery, the Abraham Lincoln Statue was originally set atop a marble column over 30 feet high. in front of the Old D.C. Courthouse. The statue, the first public monument to Lincoln, was dedicated on the third anniversary of his assassination. Over twenty percent of Washington's residents attended that unveiling, as well as President Andrew Johnson and General William T. Sherman.
In 1919, when the courthouse (formerly the District of Columbia City Hall) underwent a renovation, the statue and column were dismantled and put into storage. The statue was then re-erected on April 15, 1923, this time on a low pedestal.
In 2006, the oldest Lincoln statue in the District was removed in preparation for the expansion and renovation of the courthouse in Judiciary Square. With construction finished and the statue newly restored, it was rededicated April 15, 2009, 141 years after the original dedication and in the bicentennial year of Lincoln's birth.
President Lincoln signed the DC Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862, freeing all those held as slaves in Washington, D.C. Thus his statue is being re-dedicated on April 15, 2009, one hundred and forty-one years to the day after it was originally installed and just one day before DC Emancipation Day.

Shocking video of men who turned into zombies by Spice drug
These shocking scenes show zombies on Spice slumped around a daytime city centre. Dad-of-four Ray McKenzie, 49, found one 'possessed 'man hunched over and wobbling in the street as he went shopping. Minutes later he came across two more slumped near a bin in Nottingham screaming and groaning with their eyes shut. His video shows bypassers trying to drag one man top his feet as he stares blankly at the sky but they struggle to keep his limp body upright. Despite being in a heavy stupor, one of the men manages to stay on his feet for a time albeit hunched over.
