Abrolhos Islands - Western Australia Paradise Islands in 4K
Having an opportunity to visit somewhere you’ve never heard of, is exciting in itself, but when the place in question is described as a chain on atolls with white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, of course makes this makes it even more exciting. The place a question is The Abrolhos Islands which lay 60km off the coast of Western Australia.
We had a fantastic opportunity to take our girls to a real desert island with its very own ship wreck story. We flew by light aircraft with Kalbarri scenic flights. On our return journey we also got to check out the famous pink lake, which looked like a painting from above.
So check out our out latest Vlog and see what our girls thought, of flying in such a small plane and landing on desert island.

Remote Sailing, Western Australia's Houtman Abrolhos Islands
Soundtrack video to a recent trip from Port Geographe to the Abrolhos Islands group, the historic site of the Batavia Mutiny.
What this film doesn't show is the level of human impact we found. Large swathes of coral flattened by careless anchoring, massive amounts of rubbish washed up on the beaches, mostly plastic dumped from foreign ships and crayfishing junk from local industries, also dead birdlife and even a sheep rotting on the shoreline.
The living arrangements of fishermen on the islands leaves much to be desired, the ablutions for each shack ( and there are many ) consist of a toilet and a short pipe emptying directly into the sea. The surrounding landscape is marked with fireplaces of half burnt glass and rusted metal.
But the sea will prevail and this is still a remarkably beautiful place despite the human impact..

Cruising the shallow waters of the Abrolhos Islands in Western Australia
Baited underwater video from the continental slope, Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia
Recorded as part of a scientific research project conducted by the Department of Fisheries in collaboration with the University of Western Australia and CSIRO, this project aimed to describe and compare fish assemblages of the upper slope (100-600 m) along the west and north coasts of Western Australia. The footage was collected from a research survey in November 2010, onboard the Research Vessel Naturaliste. A total of 50 stereo-Baited Remote Underwater Videos were deployed, recording approximately 453 fish from 51 different species.
Western Australia's newest National Park - the Houtman Abrolhos Islands
Footage with thanks to Eco Abrolhos - ecoabrolhos.com.au
400 years after the first European sighting of the islands by Dutch explorer Frederik de Houtman in 1619, the Western Australian Government has officially gazetted the Houtman Abrolhos Islands as a National Park.
Located approximately 60km off the coast of Geraldton, the Islands are often referred to as Australia’s own Galápagos Islands. Unique in its biodiversity, the famed Western rock lobster, Noddy Sea Birds, Tammar Wallabies and endangered Australian sea lions all make a home here.

'CrayVox', Nigel Helyer, Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia
Project Title:CrayVox
Artists: Nigel Helyer
Community: Houtman Abrolhos Islands
Partner: City of Greater Geraldton
Residency Dates: March-May 2011 (Abrolhos Islands)
Exhibition Dates: September 2011 (Taiwan and Hong Kong)
CrayVox is the outcome of Sydney-based artist Nigel Helyer's two-month residency in the Abrolhos Islands, a remote configuration of land internationally known as the home of the rock lobster and promoted as the world's first sustainable fishery site.
Growing up in a small Sussex fishing village where the fisherfolk used open wooden boats and tarred wicker lobster pots to make their living, Helyer has long been interested in the future viability and sustainability of our marine economies.
In this installation, the suspended form of a cray boat becomes a vessel to present an audio-portrait of fishing communities in both the Abrolhos Islands and locations in southeast Asia that the artist visited to follow the export trail of rock lobsters to seafood importers and restaurants. CrayVox is presented as both functional and resonant object, projecting the energy and complexity of the Abrolhos, its people and working activities.

The Abrolhos Islands made me: The Jay Cox story
Jay Cox carried a laminated picture of the boat he needed to start his eco-tourism business in the Abrolhos Islands for 12 months before taking the plunge and purchasing it. People thought the idea of bringing tourists to the islands was crazy. “It’ll never work,” they said. But for Jay, this negative talk went in one ear and out the other: “You don’t know the Abrolhos I know,” he told them.
“When you’re talking about the Abrolhos, it just evokes emotion and you just want to get it out, you just want to tell people.”
Finding himself in the Abrolhos after chasing the islands’ legendary surf, Jay quit his apprenticeship and started crayfishing – and he still sees this as one of the best decisions he’s made. It was during this time that he met and married Sonia, then a barmaid at the local pub in Geraldton. These days, son Bronson is also part of the family business.
“The Abrolhos has been recognised as a world ‘hope spot’. The more exposure it gets, the more we can protect it as a community,” Bronson says. “The experience is very unique. No disruptions whatsoever, no distractions, you can recharge, switch off.” The history of the shipwrecked Batavia adding yet another layer to these fascinating islands.
Discover the beauty of the Abrolhos Islands, plus other extraordinary natural wonders such as World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, with a road trip along the Coral Coast Highway.
