Het wordt steeds moeilijker alle inwoners van steden dagelijks te voorzien van de door hen benodigde energie, water, voedsel en materialen – en ook om al het afval dat ze produceren weer te verwijderen en verwerken. Het PBL organiseerde op 19 juni 2014 een internationaal debat rondom deze wereldwijd geldende uitdaging voor de toekomst van de steden.
