Exploring Abuko Nature Reserve, The Gambia
Day 15 takes me into one of the most accessible wildlife reserves in Western Africa. The Abuko Nature reserve in The Gambia is home to a variety of monkey species, crocodiles, and a number of other mammals. On my day hiking through the reserve I spot two species of monkeys, a huge monitor lizard and some other creepy crawlers. The Abuko Nature reserve was fantastic, and one of the best things was that I had it all to myself.

THE GAMBIA / ABUKO NATURE RESERVE / TANJI BIRD / 2018
Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve are located in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region in the southwest coastal area of The Gambia in West Africa.
Abuko is rare among African wildlife reserves: it's tiny, it's easy to reach and you don't need a car to go in. With amazing diversity of vegetation and animals, this well-managed reserve is one of the region's best bird-watching haunts. There are more than 250 bird species that have been recorded, but you we only saw a few. There are 5km of paths through the 106-hectare reserve. There you can watch the Nile crocodile.
Best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many animals and birds.
The Tanji River Bird Reserve is an area of dunes, lagoons and woodland, and contains Bijol Island, a protected breeding ground for Caspian terns. True to name, the reserve is home to many bird species – over 300 at last count. Even if you see few birds, the place and its landscape are worth visiting.
Like Abuko, best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many birds,

BIJILO FOREST PARK
Bijilo Forest Park & Nature Trail (Monkey Park) lies in the coastal zone, next to the beach, about 11km west of Banjul capital, in the Kombo Saint Mary District, of The Gambia in West Africa. The species rich, fenced woodland was gazetted in 1952 and covers an area of 51.3 hectares (126 acres / about half a square km), and is on the Atlantic Ocean beach at the southern end of the Senegambia area of Kololi. It has a total length of 1,500 meters parallel to the coast and width of 350 meters, and the soils are deep and well drained. The protected nature reserve is comprised primarily of a closed canopy forest with a significant number of rhun palms, and with a relatively thin strip of herbaceous dune vegetation.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

The Gambia (3) - Trip with Guide/Driver Muhammed Sisawo to Animal Market at Abuko / 2018
The Animal Market in Abuko has many animals inside. Goats, sheeps and cows. The people who sell the animals, are in the center of the area. They are sitting in a tent, where they do there business and also can sit in the shadow. There are lots of children around, and when they saw us, they all come to us. We put them in line for the gifts we brought. A big 'thank you' was there gift to us!
