ABUKUMADO LIMESTONE CAVE || TAMURA || JAPAN
Naturally formed beauty created over the course of 80 million years. Lining 600m of the cave is what is said to be the greatest number and variety of stalactites in Asia. There’s a lot to see in Takine Goten, the largest hall in the cave, including the Tsuki no Sekai, which features the first light control system for stage productions ever introduced in a Japanese limestone cave.
Enjoy watching and hope you can visit this wonderful place too.

A stroll through Irimizu limestone cave (入水鍾乳洞) - Fukushima, Japan
This is a video I took inside Irimizu Cave in Tamura City, Fukushima during a day trip from Tochigi. The video is quite long as it includes most of the trek to the end and back.
Irimizu limestone cave is not very well know, but is a pretty neat little spot for those willing to try something a bit more adventurous. The cave is located about 15 minutes from beautiful Abukuma cave (a pretty well known cave in Japan).
As there isn't so much online about the cave, here's a bit of info from me.
There are three courses—A (beginner friendly), B (quite a bit harder), and C (about the same difficulty as B, but without hanging lights). The C course is also limited to 5 visitors at a time. We did the B course as the C course requires a guide who starts working at the end of April.
The A course is pretty short. To the end of the B course and back took us over an hour. The C course apparently takes about an hour and a half.
The cave has water flowing through it (like an underground river) so be prepared to get pretty wet. A couple of us got water shoes before hand which was a great idea. I'd also recommend a pair of shorts as it's not really possible to get out of crawling on your hands and knees. You can rent a rain poncho, shorts, and sandals from a little old lady near the cave. For next time, I'd probably bring some knee pads and a helmet as well. A flashlight (preferably a headlamp) is also a necessity.
This is definitely a cool place that I'd like to go visit again and I hope you will check it out too. Just please remember to respect nature (don't leave trash, carve things into the walls, etc). Have fun(k).

ISHIGAKI Eerie Limestone Caves, OKINAWA, JAPAN // JP14 - ep.8
Hi everyone! In this episode, I'll show you the Limestone Caves on Ishigaki-jima. They were a really cool and unexpected thing to find on Japanese tropical islands!
If you're going island-hopping around the Yaeyama islands, I'd recommend setting 2 hours aside to check these caves out. You can get a taxi there for less than 1000 yen from Ishigaki's ferry port.
I'll also show you around the very small but bustling city centre of Ishigaki a little bit!

Limestone cave adventure in Japan (風連鍾乳洞) | Here in Japan
Hands down the coolest cave I have ever seen, and I know my caves.
I'm a geologist.
Hi everyone, today I want to take you to the Furen Limestone Cave in a tiny town in Eastern Kyushu called Notsu, part of the city of Usuki. In 1926, a limestone cave, one of the most beautiful of caves in Japan, was discovered by a local youth group. A year later, it was designated by the Japanese government as a natural treasure of Japan.
I was invited to go see this cave twice within about two weeks, and took some video footage each time I went.
The first time, I went with my wife, a couple of friends, and a Japanese lady I know that invited us. I was blown away at how stunning the cave was. And, having a degree in geology, it was one of the very few chances I've had to have an interested audience listening to me talking about rocks. ;)
Also, there were bats in the cave, and let's just be honest with each other here, bats are cool.
The second time, I was invited by a school that I teach at to come and see the 6th grade students give guided tours through the cave. This time, I rode the bus and then walked a ways to get to the cave.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of geology seems to be mainly confined to the English language, as my knowledge of geology words in Japanese is pretty limited. However, still a great time and I was so excited to go explore it again.
If you want to go straight to the entrance of the cave, start at 2:45
If you want to skip to the main room of the cave, it is at 6:55
However, you'll probably regret skipping the rest of it, so just start at the beginning ;)
If you are ever in the Eastern Kyushu region, I highly recommend a visit. I'll stick a map down here in case you ever get the chance.

Abukuma Cave | Caving or Ghost Hunting?
Abukuma-do (阿武隈洞 - Abukuma Cave) is a limestone cave located in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The cave was discovered on August 15, 1969, northeast of the city of Tamura and was originally named Kamayama Shonyu-do (釜山鍾乳洞). It was designated a natural heritage of the town on February 7, 1971, and renamed Abukuma-do on June 1, 1973.Visitors can traverse a 600-metre-long path inside the cave as well as a 120-metre-long exploration course to view the stalactites and stalagmites. Each stalactite has taken more than eighty million years to form. Beyond the public areas lie about 2,500 metres of cave that are not open to the public. Nearby Abukuma Cave is the smaller Irimizu Shonyu-do (入水鍾乳洞 - Irimizu Limestone Cave), discovered in 1927. Irimizu Limestone Cave was designated a National Natural Treasure on December 28, 1934.The temperature inside Abukuma-do is around 15 °C and the humidity is above 90%.
Abubukuma-dong was discovered in September 1969 from the present Busan quarry site in an area called Abukuma Highlands (阿武隈高地), or Harachitai highlands(原地帯), in the middle of a plateau of geologic formation of irregular limestone deposits, on the west side slope of Mt. Otakine. Since ancient times mining for marble and limestone has been popular in that area. Limestone was also discovered at Abukuma-do. At the year of Abukuma-do's discovery mining in that area was suspended, and a limestone outcrop remains to this day near it's parking lot.
The initial discovery of an entrance to the cave is now near the exit of the modern day tourist destination. The cave itself consists of a 12m deep hole, a tunnel running 60m north, and a tunnel running 15m southwest. In March 1970 the Japanese university 's expedition team explored the inside of the cave, and found a main cave ahead of the air hole in the northern end that was regarded as the end point until then. In 1973, four years after the discovery, the inside of the cave was developed for observation and it was opened to the public.

Golden Week 1: Abukuma Caves
Golden Week is a series of four consecutive national holidays in Japan at the start of May. It is one of the busiest weeks of the year for travel. This year during Golden Week I visited three spots that are relatively local to me that I'd never been to before:
1. Abukuma Caves in Tamura, Fukushima- Beautiful limestone caves
2. Matsushima Bay in Matsushima, Miyagi- One of the top three scenic views of Japan
3. Goshikinuma, the Five-Colored Lakes, in Urabandai, Fukushima- Volcanic lakes formed when Mt. Bandai erupted. The minerals in the water cause the lakes to be different colors.
