HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as Correspondent Academician of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa
The Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Academy of Sciences of Lisbon) facebook.com/academia.das.ciencias.de.lisboa is one of the oldest European scientific institutions, founded on 24th December 1779, under the Royal patronage of Queen D. Maria I, under the motto Nisio Utile Est Quod Facimus Stulta Est Gloria. (Glory is in vain if what we do is of no use)
Following the tradition of the 18th century Academies formed at the Age of Enlightenment, the 'Academia das Ciências' was founded to dedicate itself to the Glory and Public Happiness, for the progress of National Instruction, for the perfection of the Sciences and the Arts and the enhancement of the Popular Industry. It gathers the most renowned personalities in the domains of Sciences and Letters with the goal of promoting progress and knowledge.
The Academy is organized in two Classes, Sciences and Letters, and in each Class there are Sitting Members (only 35 members), national Correspondents, and foreign Correspondents. Members are chosen by their merit in academic or scientific activities. The election process is very meticulous and involves a formal proposal; the discussion of the curriculum; a vote in a plenary meeting of the sitting members especially convened for that purpose; and the approval of the vote by the President of the Academy.
The Lisbon Academy of Sciences had been aware that HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was intended to visit Portugal in the context of the Celebrations of the 500 Years of the Diplomatic Relations between Portugal and Thailand and, as a symbolic homage to that Friendship, a process for the designation of HRH as an Academician was set in motion. On March 6th 2012 the Plenary of the Sitting Members of the Class of Letters unanimously elected HRH as Correspondent and thereafter the election was properly approved by the President of the Academia das Ciências, Professor Adriano Moreira.
Not being able to deliver it in person, in the magnificent Palace in Lisbon, a former convent, where the 'Academia das Ciências' is based, the President has asked H.E. the Ambassador of Portugal to the Kingdom of Thailand to hand over, on his behalf, to Her Royal Highness, the Diploma formalizing the newly acquired status as 'Académica-Correspondente'.
Very kindly HRH Princess Sirindhorn has accepted an invitation to visit the Embassy of Portugal on 17th July 2012, when the Ambassador of Portugal, H.E. Dr Jorge Torres-Pereira expressed his utmost honour for the gracious Visit and, on behalf of the President of the Academy, presented HRH with the Diploma.

ESTADO DE EXCEPÇÃO. CITAC: um projecto etnohistórico (english subtitles)
SEE ENGLISH ABSTRACT BELOW
SINOPSE
STATE OF EXCEPTION.
CITAC: an ethnohistorical project (1956-1978)
by Ricardo Seiça Salgado
© 2007
STATE OF EXCEPTION is a documentary about CITAC (Coimbra’s Academy Theatrical Initiation Circle), revealing History from its beginnings in 1956 until 1974’s revolution aftermath. It is the history of this university theatre group, and through it, of the history of theatre in Portugal, revealing two outstanding decades in the History of Portugal. Taking Coimbra’s Academy as a starting point, the documentary reproduces student life, women’s role in society and the changing being-in-the-world mentalities. It also reproduces the then existent censorship, the fight against the dictatorship, and the resistance to a regime which had worn itself out, as well as the resultant contradictions of the democratic revolution.
CITAC has a heritage of 50 years of experiences in Coimbra. It carries with it the possibility of theatrically and civically training thinking bodies, spinning its own yarn of a possible model, from generation to generation, somewhere in between studies, with theatre and social drama always present. Before the democratic revolution, and through theatre, they managed to resist, escaping the government’s attempts to eradicate the democratic principles present in the various groups of the Academic Association. After the revolution, this ethos is made evident through criticism and radicalism, through the confrontation of the democratic possibilities and the State under construction, and the questioning of it through performance.
CITAC carries with it the history of a country which, to this day, seeks to define itself, and whose people seem unable to inscribe themselves. It carries with it that void in our consciousness which works in the fog, the same fog José Gil has spoken of. But because this history demands to be inscribed, it acts as an exception to the common paralysis prevalent in Portuguese life, an ethos which to this day remains intact. For that reason, CITAC acts as an open window to the world.
Project carried out as part of a PhD research at ISCTE-IUL, Lisbon, sponsored by a grant from FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, Portugal.
