UKRAINE: RUSSIAN WARSHIPS IN SEVASTOPOL HARBOUR

Russia is heating up tensions with NATO by announcing plans to deploy more ships into the Adriatic Sea near the Balkans.

Russian defence Minster Marshal Igor Sergeev announced the move after the Russian delegation to Yugoslavia returned from its peace mission on Wednesday.

Russian press speculated that Sergeev and Russian generals had made the decision after talks with Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic and his military chiefs.

Russia's navy was preparing to send a reconnaissance ship from its Black Sea fleet into the Adriatic Sea on a mission western analysts claim amounts to a spying mission for the Serbs on NATO's forces.

In Sevastopol, the home of the Black Sea Fleet, sailors were carrying out last minute checks and repairs on a navy ship destined for the Adriatic.

The reconnaissance ship, called Liman, is due to leave the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Saturday.

But the Black Sea Fleet has first to receive permission from the Turkish government for its ships to pass through the Bosphorus and into the Mediterranean.

However, a senior Russian navy officer said the fleet already has permission for another group of seven ships to pass through the Bosphorus at a later date.

The press service of the Black Sea Fleet confirms that the reconnaissance ship Liman will move out into the Mediterranean Sea for a closer examination of the situation in the region of the Kosovo conflict.

Moscow newspapers said the next batch of ships could include vessels capable of carrying the feared S-300 anti-aircraft rocket complex and one assault ship designed to transport a battalion of marines and their armour.

As far as information about another seven ships of the fleet based in Sevastopol goes, the press service confirms at present preparations are under way to get the ships ready for planned exercises in the Mediterranean Sea from April 19-29.

The presence of Russian ships so close to the theatre of war have added to the tensions in the Balkans.

It is expected the Russian ships will be under constant surveillance from NATO ships as soon as they near the Balkan conflict zone.

Putin has burnished his action man image by diving in a mini submarine

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin burnished his action man persona by diving down in a mini-submarine to explore a shipwreck off the coast of the Crimea peninsula that Moscow seized from Ukraine last year.
Dressed in a beige pants suit, Putin plunged down to a depth of 83 metres seated alongside the pilot in the glass-bubble cabin of the Dutch-made vessel.
“83 metres is a pretty substantial depth,” said a proud Putin.
“It was interesting.”

The Kremlin strongman went underwater to view the Byzantine-era wreckage in the Black Sea off Crimea that included a trove of 10th century pottery. The remains were discovered off the coast of Sevastopol by Russian divers earlier this year.
“It is a galleon that was transporting civilian cargo through the bay of Balaclava,” Putin said.
“It is still to be investigated by experts. I have to say that there are not that many similar remains like this in the north of the Black Sea.”
Putin has become known for his eye-catching stunts during his 15 years in charge of Russia, that have included flying with cranes, riding topless on horseback and darting an endangered tiger.
