University of Pennsylvania Ivy League UPENN Philadelphia WHARTON School Penn Quakers
The University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia. Penn is one of 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities and one of the nine original Colonial Colleges.
Benjamin Franklin, Penn's founder, advocated an educational program that focused as much on practical education for commerce and public service as on the classics and theology. The university coat of arms adopted features directly from the Franklin family's own coat of arms. Penn was one of the first academic institutions to follow a multidisciplinary model pioneered by several European universities. The first school of medicine in North America, the first collegiate business school and the first student union building and organization, were all born at Penn. Penn is among the top research universities in the world, for both quality and quantity of research. The University is associated with several important innovations and discoveries in many fields of science and the humanities.
Over its long history, Penn has produced many distinguished alumni and Nobel laureates. These include heads of state, supreme court justices of the U.S. & other countries, university presidents, founders of technology companies, international law firms and global financial institutions, and many athletes, artists and celebrities.
Prominent alumni include the ninth President of the United States William Henry Harrison, Donald Trump, John Legend, Warren Buffet, and Sharon Stone.
The first school of medicine in North America (Perelman School of Medicine, 1765), the first collegiate business school (Wharton School of Business, 1881) and the first student union building and organization (Houston Hall, 1896) were all born at Penn.

Pennsylvania
The Keystone state -- key to America's independence. Check out the history and culture of Pennsylvania, where many German-speaking immigrants settled, with Christopher Hoh. #50states #PA
Transcript:
Hello, my name is Christopher Hoh. I work in the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, and I was born and brought up in the the Keystone State.
Pennsylvania was one of the original 13 colonies. It was called the Keystone State in the 18th century because of its central location and role in U.S. history. The first capital of the United States was in Philadelphia.
Before it was colonized, the area was home to Native American tribes, including the Lenape and the Susquehannok.
The name Pennsylvania means, Penn's Woods. In 1681, England's King Charles II gave the land to William Penn as payment for a debt of 16,000 pounds. This was one of the largest land grants to an individual in history.
William Penn was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, who were persecuted in England. So Penn established the colony for any people persecuted for their faith.
Many religious exiles from Europe settled in Pennsylvania, including the Amish, an Anabaptist sect. Today, the Amish live much as they did in the 17th century, without modern conveniences such as electricity and cars.
In the 18th and 19th centuries Germans migrated to Pennsylvania in large numbers. English‐speakers mispronounced the German word, Deutsch, as Dutch, and these immigrants became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch.
In many Pennsylvania communities, German was spoken as the language of everyday life into the early 1900's. You can still hear German dialects in the farmers' markets of Lancaster and Reading, my home town.
The language is similar to Germany's Palatinate dialect. For example, the man's dog -- der Hund des Mannes -- is this in PA Dutch -- em Mann sei Hund.
Today, 12.7 million people live in Pennsylvania, the sixth most populous state in the U.S. It covers over 46,000 square miles (more than 119,000 km2 ).
Pennsylvania has several large cities. Philadelphia was known in the 1700's as the Athens of America because of its rich cultural life.
Part of that is attributed to Pennsylvania's most famous citizen, Benjamin Franklin -- author, inventor, philosopher, businessman, diplomat and revolutionary leader.
Philadelphia is also home to the Liberty Bell, the icon of American freedom. It remains on view, cracked, on Independence Mall, where the Continental Congress met and in 1776 declared independence from Britain.
Here are some other firsts from Pennsylvania:
The first medical school, hospital, library and insurance company were established in there.
The first commercially drilled oil well near Titusville produced the first U.S. oil boom in 1859.
The first U.S. Envoy to Austria in 1838 was Henry A.P. Muhlenberg, from Lancaster.
And the Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in America.
My hometown, Reading, is located in southeastern Pennsylvania. Formerly a textile and manufacturing center, Reading became known as The Factory Outlet Capital of the World.
The surrounding area has been called the Snack Food Capital of the World, leading all other states in the production of pretzels, chips and candy.
The state has some other interesting food facts.
The Yuengling Brewery, in Pottsville, is the oldest operating brewery in America, established in 1829.
A little further west is Hershey, the birthplace of Hershey chocolate bars. The town smells of chocolate and the street lights are shaped like Hershey kisses.
And don't forget Philly cheese steaks.
Pennsylvania gave birth to one US President -- James Buchanan in the 1800s.
Vice President Joe Biden was born in Scranton.
Many actors also come from Pennsylvania including Kevin Bacon, Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Sharon Stone, to name a few.
Pennsylvania has always had a creative music scene. Each religious sect that settled in Pennsylvania brought with it a unique style of music. The Moravians, in Bethlehem, introduced organs and trombones into their worship. The Mennonites and Lutherans sang heartily, from German hymnbooks. And the Ephrata Cloister was known for beautiful harmony.
Popular singers today include Taylor Swift, from Wyomissing, and Christina Aguilera and George Benson, from Pittsburgh.
Philadelphia is also the birthplace of the famous TV program, American Bandstand, which introduced singers and bands to teenagers for more than 20 years.
I travel the world but I still have a strong connection to my home state: I'm a career diplomat -- like Benjamin Franklin, our country's first envoy. I'm also a composer who benefited from my home state's musical milieu.
I'm proud to come from Pennsylvania, the land of the Liberty Bell, which helped inspire the cause of freedom for all humanity.

Our visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Philly The city of brotherly love!
Philadelphia, which is Greek for brotherly love (from Philos, love or friendship, and Delphos, brother) Founded by William Penn, Penn As a Quaker, Penn had experienced religious persecution and wanted his colony to be a place where anyone could worship freely.
With centuries of culture and personality built up, the breathing city of Philadelphia exemplifies “brotherly or sisterly love” in its own fashion. Its sports fans are known to be the most loyal and passionate in the business, while it’s often a tough love, it’s a love for sure. The music in Philadelphia is one of a kind, and it’s developed historically standout sounds in the hip-hop and indie rock spaces. On top of it all, Philly is a city that shares its cheesesteaks, art museums, festivals, and personalities with all of its visitors, just like a sibling you grew up alongside.
Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and, at the time of the American Revolution, was the largest and most important city in America. Founded by William Penn as a place of religious tolerance, its spirit infused the early steps towards independence.
The first European settlers on the site were Swedes, who established a community at the mouth of the Schuykill not later than 1643. England, however, established its control over the entire region, and in 1681, King Charles II made William Penn a grant of land that became Pennsylvania.
An advance group was sent that year, and Penn followed in 1682. They established Philadelphia in the southeast corner of the colony, following a plan for the town's development. Philadephia's guiding principle was tolerance towards all faiths. Philadelphia attracted people from all over Europe, with such Quakers as Penn especially well represented. The city developed a thriving trade with the West Indies and soon became the largest and most important city in the colonies. It received its city charter in 1701.
Philadelphia's most famous citizen in the 18th century was Benjamin Franklin, widely considered to be one of that century's foremost scientists, in addition to one of the guiding lights of the Revolution. The First and Second Continental congresses were held in Philadelphia, and the city served as the nation's unofficial capital throughout the War of Independence, except for the period between September 26, 1777, and June 18, 1778, when it was held by the British. Following the war, the convention that produced the Constitution (text) was held in Philadelphia.
By the time of the first census in 1790, New York had passed Philadelphia in size. During the first half of the 19th century, important suburbs grew up around Philadelphia, including Kensington, Moyamensing, Northern Liberties, Southwark, and Spring Garden, which ranked among the country's top 100 places in the national census.
By mid-century, Philadelphia had dropped to fourth place in population. In 1854, the Pennsylvania legislature redrew the boundaries of Philadelphia to include the entire county, which boosted the city's population back to second. It held that position until overtaken by Chicago in the census of 1890.
In 1876, Philadelphia hosted one of the country's first international expositions, to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence. Held at Fairmont Park from May 10 to November 10, the exposition displayed industries from 50 countries.
Philadelphia, cradle of America's dream of freedom, is home to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution (narrative), great documents that cried out, “Let Freedom Ring, like the Liberty Bell. Amidst the ordinary citizens of Philadelphia, gathered in the humble Carpenter's Hall on Chestnut Street, the Colonial Fathers gave voice and life to those freedoms at the First Continental Congress.
Many historic sites in Philadelphia have been restored or rebuilt to help preserve the nation’s heritage as a free people. Providing fitting homage to these places, a place of hallowed ground was sanctified, the Independence National Historical Park. On these grounds is Independence Hall, where the Declaration and the Constitution reside. The home of Betsy Ross still stands on Arch Street.
Philadelphia also is one of America's leading cultural centers. The University of Philadelphia, established in 1740, occupies a 120-acre campus in West Philadelphia. The Academy of Natural Science, the oldest institution of its kind in America, was founded in 1805. The Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest zoological garden in the nation, houses 1,600 rare and exotic animals. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, founded in 1876, displays some of the world's finest Impressionist art. Philadelphia's own Washington Monument stands in front of the art museum as if to guard the collections within.

Penn Law celebrates the Class of 2019
On Monday, May 20, the University of Pennsylvania Law School hosted its graduation ceremony at the American Academy of Music in Philadelphia. This year, 250 students received the JD degree, 116 students from 29 countries received the LLM degree, 5 students received an SJD, and 24 students received a Master in Law (ML) degree. The Class of 2019 Commencement Address was delivered by Kalpana Kotagal L’05.
As a partner at Cohen Milstein, Kotagal works to address issues of employment and civil rights law, class actions, mandatory arbitration, and diversity in the workplace as a member of the firm’s Civil Rights & Employment practice group. She has represented clients in a range of significant cases under Title VII, the Equal Pay Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and more. Kotagal also played a central role in working to transform film and television industry hiring practices by creating the Inclusion Rider, a contract provision that actors, directors, and producers can use to negotiate for more diverse and inclusive hiring on set. Earlier this year, she discussed the Inclusion Rider and efforts to remedy workplace inequities in a TEDx talk in Austria.
Kotagal has repeatedly been recognized for her efforts to champion equity, diversity, and inclusion through her practice of law. Most recently, Law360 named her a “2018 MVP – Employment,” an award recognizing the top five most influential employment lawyers in the United States from both the Defense and Plaintiffs bars. Chambers Women in Law: USA awarded her the prestigious “Outstanding Contribution to the Community in Advancing Diversity” Award, and she was selected as a 2018-19 Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard Law School.
Addressing Penn Law graduates, Kotagal encouraged them do the hard work of learning the skills, substantive law, and rules that guide the legal profession, but not to be afraid to carve out their own paths. She described how she and her colleagues did just that in the process of developing the Inclusion Rider.
Other speakers from the event included Dean and Bernard G. Segal Professor of Law Ted Ruger, Interim Dean of Students Felicia Lin L’08, and class speakers Nakul Nayak LLM’19, Zachary Dunn L’19, Khari Cyrus L’19, Bryan McIntyre L’19, Paulina Flores LLM’19, and Jean Gabat L’19.
