Places to see in ( Accrington - UK )
Accrington is a town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, England. Accrington lies about 4 miles east of Blackburn, 6 miles west of Burnley, 13 miles east of Preston, 20 miles north of Manchester city centre and is situated on the mostly culverted River Hyndburn. Commonly abbreviated by locals to Accy.
Accrington is a former centre of the cotton and textile machinery industries. The town is famed for manufacturing the hardest and densest building bricks in the world, The Accrington NORI (iron), which were used in the construction of the Empire State Building and for the foundations of Blackpool Tower; famous for Accrington Stanley F.C. and the Haworth Art Gallery which holds Europe's largest collection of Tiffany glass.
Accrington is a hill town located at the western edge of the Pennines within a bowl and largely encircled by surrounding hills to heights of 300-400m. The Hyndburn or Accrington Brook flows through the centre of the town. Hill settlements origins were as the economic foci of the district engaging in the spinning and weaving of woolen cloth. Wool, lead and coal were other local industries.
The town has strong local travel links as Accrington railway station lies on the East Lancashire Line serving trains running locally and trains running from Blackpool to York. However, recent changes to the train timetables have been a disservice to Accrington, increasing the journey time to Preston (a vital link to London or Scotland) by up to 1.5 hours. However, there are still buses to Manchester every thirty minutes as well as more frequent services to other towns in east Lancashire.
Accrington Library, on St James Street, is a Carnegie library that opened in 1908. It is noted for its stained glass window designed by Gustav Hiller and as a place of inspiration for the young Jeanette Winterson. Near the Tesco supermarket, there is Accrington Skate Park which is popular during the school holidays. On Broadway, Accrington Police Station serves the Borough of Hyndburn.

A Potted History of Accrington's Market Hall 2014
The Lancashire town of Accrington has what is known as the 'Acorn Trail'. It's a short walk around the town that stops off at 17 points of historical interest. Accrington's Market Hall is the last stop in the trail and looking in to its history has prompted me to make this video on what I believe is a building that is worthy of individual attention. Cramming 145 years of history in to 12 minutes isn't easy but I kept it this short in order to present to the Accrington Camera club. If you love Accrington and its history I'm sure you'll find this of interest. Hope you enjoy it. Feedback always welcome at the email address given at the end of the video.

Accrington Remembers
Created for the Centenary Remembrance Day 2018, this project represented a coming together of Accrington to commemorate the Accrington Pals and their legacy, all specifically made to be projection mapped to the unique architecture of the Market Hall, the site from which the Pals made their heroic farewells 100 years ago.
Working with the public and Hyndburn Council, supported by Heritage Lottery, the project was an investigation into the story of those turbulent few months, and the resonances they hold today. Key moments played out across the architecture - from the Edwardian era of Accrington through the call for battalions, to the triumphant leaving of the troops. From the tragic moments on the front line to the candles being lit across the town, through to the present day and its connection to those moments through young people reflecting the young who gave their lives. The Market Hall brought to life this tale of individual valour, the pride of a town and the pride of a nation in what that represents.
