STORYLINE:
The frailty of the tsunami relief chain was exposed Tuesday when flights carrying vital supplies into Banda Aceh, the provincial capital of Indonesia''s devastated Aceh province, were suspended for most of the day after a cargo plane hit a herd of cattle and skidded to a halt, blocking the runway.
No one was injured, but the Boeing 737 had to be towed off the runway with damage visible to its left engine.
The airport reopened Tuesday evening.
It was not immediately clear exactly how many aid flights to the airport were blocked; helicopters were still able to use the airport.
Meanwhile in Jakarta, a plane charted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) arrived at the airport on Tuesday morning carrying 92 tons of blankets.
The UNHCR plans to distribute the blankets to some 100,000 people in the northwestern province of Aceh who were displaced by the December 26 tsunami.
Another plane, also chartered by the UNHCR and carrying about 2,000 tents, was also expected to arrive in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon.
The UN refugee agency says it is planning a six-month, multi-million-dollar emergency relief operation for tsunami victims in Aceh and Sri Lanka.
In northern Sumatra, the American military relief effort continued at full pace, and for the first time used SH-60 helicopters to deliver aid and evacuate refugees in addition to the smaller Seahawk choppers that have been buzzing up and down the coast in recent days.
Medical facilities and helicopters were the main needs in the region, a US military spokesman in Banda Aceh said.
Flying in and out of flattened Sumatran villages, American helicopters are carrying water, biscuits and other bare necessities to ravaged Indonesian communities, some of which had been impossible to reach in the nine days since an earthquake and tsunami hit coastlines in Asia and Africa, killing an estimated 150,000 people.
The disaster has sparked the biggest outpouring of aid in history, with the United Nations saying governments and global organisations have pledged about US $2 billion dollars, a quarter of it from Japan - the single largest donor so far.
The World Health Organization warned that disease continues to threaten areas around the Indian Ocean, even though no outbreaks have been reported so far.

STORYLINE
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan arrived in Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged Aceh province on Friday to witness the devastation and the UN relief effort that's channelling relief to up to a million survivors left homeless by the disaster.
Annan was scheduled to take a ride in a Singaporean helicopter over the devastated west coast of Sumatra island and then drive through the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.
Up to 100,000 people are feared dead on Sumatra island, killed by the December 26 quake and tsunami that flattened vast areas of Aceh, a restive province on the island's northern tip.
The total killed in 11 nations is expected to far exceed 150,000, the United Nations says.
Annan's visit came the day after he urged donor nations to quickly transform billions of dollars in aid pledges into cash to help bankroll the relief effort.
It also came as Indonesia's government raised its death toll by nearly 20,000 people to 113,306.
After touching down in Banda Aceh, Annan spoke to Indonesia's Welfare Minister Alwi Shihad about the situation in the shattered region.
World Bank President James Wolfensohn is also travelling with Annan and separately, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi flew into Banda Aceh to survey the damage.

STORYLINE:
The United States is eager to end its military tsunami relief operation as soon as Indonesia and other stricken nations are ready to take over, US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said in Banda Aceh on Saturday.
As relief and clean-up operations continued, the United Nations began paying survivors in Indonesia to clear rubble.
The US military wants to try as quickly as we can to hand over responsibility to others, and especially to the Indonesian government, as they're ready to take that on, Wolfowitz said after taking a helicopter tour of Aceh province's ravaged coast and meeting the country's welfare minister and military chief, General Endriartono Sutarto.
A huge earthquake and the tsunami it spawned killed more than 157,000 people across 11 countries, triggering an unprecedented global response.
The United States was quick to deploy thousands of troops to help in the relief effort, and American helicopter pilots have made hundreds of flights to deliver aid to Sumatra's coastal communities.
Still, Indonesia has expressed unease with the number of foreign troops on its territory as part of the relief effort and wants them out before the end
of March.
Wolfowitz said the US military role would wind down by that deadline.
A one-time ambassador to Indonesia, Wolfowitz said cooperation with Jakarta has been very good. When asked if it's possible the tsunami disaster
will help bring reconciliation between the military and rebels in Aceh, he said that if the reconstruction is a success, people in Aceh will see the
benefit of being part of Indonesia.
The rebels, who want an independent homeland, have declared a ceasefire, and the government has said it is pursuing a permanent truce. But there has been no word on actual peace talks.

Boat on the Roof, Banda Aceh (13/11/2018)
Story of Boat on the Roof
A 30-meter-long fishing boat remains stuck on the roof of a house in Lampulo village, in Banda Aceh’s KutaAlam sub-district, almost two kilometers away from the coast.
A plaque below the boat states that the 59 people who sought shelter aboard it that survived in the December 26, 2004 tsunami disaster.
Among them are Syamsuddin, his wife Basyariah and their three children. The family still lives in the house next to the boat, which cushioned it from the force of the water.
When the tsunami struck their village on Sunday morning, the family and 22 of their neighbors climbed up to the second story of their house.
Amazingly, the drifting boat landed on the roof, and all 25 people climbed into the boat. Another 34 people soon followed, climbing up to the roofs of their houses and then into the vessel. Dozens of others who tried to run further inland were never seen again.
“From the boat, we could see houses and other buildings leveled by the tsunami, which came in three waves. We could only pray to Allah to be saved from this massive calamity. We even made apologies to each other as we thought it was the end of the world,” Syamsuddin said.
“I thought it was Armageddon. The boat was sent by angels to pick us up. When we decided to set sail to save others, I realized that there was no one left to save, and everyone on the boat knew each other.”
Among the survivors was a 3-month-old baby, several children and an 85-year-old woman. After several hours, Basyariah recalled, they were struck by hunger. But another miracle awaited them, as a cluster of green coconuts drifted by.
Today, local children play in the boat. Visitors stop by to climb aboard and see the view of distant Lampulo fish market. There are some pictures of malignancy of disasterdisplayed in the house that now set as tsunami heritage. For tourists who visit Banda Aceh, don’t miss to visit this overawe site.
What was the Aceh Sultanate?
The Inca Empire, or Inka Empire (Quechua: Tawantinsuyu), was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The administrative, political and military center of the empire was located in Cusco in modern-day Peru. The Inca civilization arose from the highlands of Peru sometime in the early 13th century.
From 1438 to 1533, the Incas used a variety of methods, from conquest to peaceful assimilation, to incorporate a large portion of western South America.
