Malaysia and Singapore Trip 2013 - KL, Georgetown, Cameron Highlands, Perhentian GoPro / Nex
My recent video from our trip to Asia; time for Malaysia and Singapore!
Shots taken with GoPro 2 and Sony Nex 5.
Music: OVERWERK - The Nth Degree - Odyssey
We started from Kuala Lumpur - city of contrasts - on the hand with modern skyscrapers, amazing Petronas Twin Towers, and air-conditioned shopping malls, on the other with traditional colonial architecture, Chinese and Hindu temples, Muslim mosques and vivid bazaars (our favourite - Petaling street).
After KL we moved to Penang island - Georgetown - offering probably the best food in the whole Malaysia on multiple (and enormous!) hawker stalls, with the city center covered with interesting street art and with easily accessible by bike its historical buildings influenced by eastern and western properties.
Cameron Highlands was the next stop with its picturesque tea plantations, world's biggest flower - Rafflesia, multiple jungle tracks and the very Mossy Forest. We also tried the king... DURIAN, my wife says... the stinker!
Final stop in Malaysia was a week on the Perhentian Islands - enjoyable Besar. Nevertheless, not the beaches were the most astonishing, but the underwater world and hours of diving (with best instructor and coolest Japanese ladies!) and snorkeling - watching magnificent coral reefs with its habitants - sting rays, turtles, parrot -, lion- and stone fish. It's really time to buy new GoPro!
Having gained SSI open water license, we were ready to discover Singapore -- incredible place, which simply must be visited! Clean, developed city with impressive ultramodern city center, with well-maintained, lively Chinatown and Little India. We loved Marina Bay Sands with cosmic Helix Bridge, the ArtScience Museum and Gardens by the Bay, enjoyed delicious cuisine and spent a great day in amazing Singapore zoo (never seen zoo like that!).

Penang Island - Pearl of the Orient
Penang Island Malaysia
Also known as the Pearl of the Orient
Pearl of the Orient
By Choong Kwee Kim
Food, the beach, more food, more stretches of golden sand -- that's what the Pearl of the Orient has become famous for and still is. Penang, comprising a tropical island and mainland Province Wellesley (or Seberang Prai) in the north-west of Peninsular Malaysia, is a former Straits Settlement that still exudes an old world charm in the inner city of George Town.
Old world charm
The narrow streets of old George Town are flanked by pre-war houses that feature interesting architectural remnants of the past. The Malay community centred around the
Acheen Street mosque and Kapitan Keling Mosque area, thrive in close proximity to the Chinatown areas of Campbell Street, Kimberly Street and Carnarvon Street. A totally different experience is in store a few streets away where colourful sarees, the smell of exotic spices and loud radio broadcasts of Indian songs characterise the Little India enclave.
Apart from heritage, tourism is another strong point of Penang with its hawker food and beaches among its assets.
Hawker food central
The famous Penang laksa, rojak, char koay teow, nasi kandar, pasembur, chendol and muar chee are among the cheap and delicious local dishes that attract food lovers from far and near to savour them at roadside stalls.
Along the Batu Feringghi tourism belt are hotels, resorts and service apartments that generate a lively atmosphere full of touristy goings-on. The sun and surf on the north of the idyllic island is contrasted with the factories at the industrial zone on the south-eastern tip that contribute significantly to the state's revenue.
Northern industrial zone
Many multinational corporations have their bases here and provide employment opportunities to locals, precipitating the growth of new townships in the suburban areas outside of the state capital.
Penang, despite being a small state that is home to a population of only 1.3 million, is a thriving place that offers an interesting blend of the old and new.
