Acheron River
Steeped in ancient mythology and drenched in natural beauty, the Acheron River is a must-visit on your holiday to Parga. With a source over 50 kilometres from Parga, the river flows into Ionian Sea in Ammoudia.
This little seaside village is less than 20 kilometres away from Parga by road, a journey that takes around 25 minutes. There are a number of places you can head to where you can enjoy the waters of the Acheron River though, and there are tours that take you to some of the best bits.
In ancient Greek mythology, the Acheron was one of the underworld’s five rivers, and it had to be crossed by the newly dead. It was known for its healing properties, where sins could be washed away, rather than as a place of punishment like the Cocytus, which means the ‘river of wailing’.
Try to visit on a warm day, when the refreshing water’s a real treat. It’s not hard to conjure up thoughts of the river’s healing powers as you splash your way through the shallow current. You’ll wade through the crystal clear water surrounded by rocky slopes, steep cliffs, and lush vegetation.
If you have a waterproof camera then you’ll get some great photos to take home with you. Keep your eye out for birds of prey circling above too, as you amble past striking rock formations and pretty waterfalls.
For something a bit different, you can ride a horse through the river, or go rafting instead. After
paddling down rapids, stop for a picnic beside the water as you take in the beautiful scenery. When you return to Parga, head to Sugar Bar and raise a toast to your day at the Acheron River.

The Necromanteion of Ephyra
Near the village of Mesopotamos is one of the most exceptional surviving oracles of the ancient world. A must see attraction in the area.
The Nekromanteion (Greek: Νεκρομαντεῖον) was an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. According to tradition, it was located on the banks of the Acheron river in Epirus. This site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. The site is at the meeting point of the Acheron, Pyriphlegethon and Cocytus rivers, believed to flow through and water the kingdom of Hades. The meaning of the names of the rivers has been interpreted to be joyless, burning coals and lament.
The word Necromanteion means Oracle of the Dead, and the faithful came here to talk with their dead ancestors. Ritual use of the Necromanteion involved elaborate ceremonies wherein celebrants seeking to speak to the dead would start by gathering in the ziggurat-like temple and consuming a meal of broad beans, pork, barley bread, oysters, and a narcotic compound. Following a cleansing ceremony and the sacrifice of sheep, the faithful would descend through a chthonic series of meandric corridors leaving offerings as they passed through a number of iron gates. The nekromanteia would pose a series of questions and chant prayers and the celebrants would then witness the priest arise from the floor and begin to fly about the temple through the use of Aeorema-like theatrical cranes.
Countless beaches, countless choices
Sixty kilometres of sandy beaches and fine swimming await you from Preveza to Parga; Loutsa, Valtos, Lychnos, Ammouthia, Lygia, Kastrosykia…the list continues with a typical mixture; some secluded and practically untouched, some organised with busy beach bars.

The Acheron is a river in north-west of Greece in the Epirus region.
In Greek mythology, Acheron was one of the five rivers of the underworld. Charon, the ferryman of Hades had ferried the souls of the dead across the Acheron to hell. Near the village of Glyki, crystal clear and ice-cold water bubbles out of the soil and rocks of both sides of the narrow canyon. This area is called Springs of Acheron.
Our dog was not concerned about the souls of the dead and enjoyed the surprising coolness in the heat of late Greek summer. It's very refreshing to walk through the river at this point; however, waterproof shoes are recommended.

please read more:
