Beaches Toronto Chiropractor - Hip Flexor - Health and Wellness tips
Some tips on care for the hip flexor - very important to the low back mechanics from Dr. Kelly Robazza of the Beaches Helth Group In Toronto.
With prolonged sitting or driving these muscles are often chronically contracted and shortened.
Hip Flexor issues are one of the most common complaints we see in our office, as it is very important to the low back mechanics.
The reason they are called the hip flexors is because when that muscle contracts it will either bend your trunk or it will flex your hip forward. The biggest problem with these muscles is being overworked or prolonged sitting and prolonged driving.
So many people have contracted and shortened those muscles over time making the hip flexor muscles chronically tight and short.
We treat by releasing some of the tension by trapping the muscle in a shortened position and then dragging the muscle underneath a contact point through a range of motion. Each time we make a pass over the hip flexor it gets a little bit longer and a little bit easier to stretch. We will also fatigue the muscle by doing a P & F stretch resetting the tension on the muscle by having the patient fatigue the muscle and then we stretch it again.
There are many home care stretches that can help the hip flexor muscle. For example, lunge forward straightening your back leg and bring your arm forward and up, turn and bend back as demonstrated in the video. In this stretch you are pushing your hip through the muscle and stretching to lengthening that hip flexor.
If you are a siting person at work or a driver this will be a great stretch to lengthen that hip flexor muscle.
Benefit of scar tissue massage therapy
Scar Massage therapy
Scarring can occur for a variety of reasons -- through surgery, injury, accidents, burns and so on. Some scars are practically unnoticeable while others can stand out quite a bit, causing discomfort or even pain and potentially making the owner of the scar self conscious. If you've ever wished your scars were less obvious or less painful, one great option that you can turn to is scar massage.
What is Scar Massage?
Scar massage is a form of scar reduction that can be used after surgery, on existing scars, on burn scars, and so on. It can be used on just about any type of scar anywhere on the body but it is important that the scar is fully healed. Never massage open wounds or wounds that have only healed superficially (on the top layer). Scar massage will generally operate on the scar itself as well as the healthy tissue that surrounds it. A variety of techniques can be used but you should always go slowly and gradually increase the pressure so as not to cause further damage.
Benefits of Scar Massage
There are several benefits to massaging your scars. Massage will help to rebuild the collagen in the skin, breaking down the overly tough fibres. New tissue growth will also be stimulated. Massage will also help to increase the sensitivity in the tissue and also reduce pain and tightness in the scar. Scar massage will also increase circulation in the area and neurological function.
From a cosmetic point of view, massage will help to improve the healing process in the scar and also help it to fade. Your scar will look better, and there will be less redness and swelling.

Outline from Dr. Kris Dorken in Video:
As a chiropractor my focus, primarily, is looking at how the body heals and the bones that make up the spine, the vertibre. What their job is ultimately, to protect the spinal cord and nerves. So when we look at it, as a whole, we want to be able to have it moving and working in a certain way.
What we do when people come in is we do a really detailed comprehensive history looking at their posture, looking at their weight distribution, doing some orthopedic tests, doing different ranges of motion, doing different neurological tests.
I graduated in 2007, at that time I felt like even though I had all that school, what I did was moved to different cities across Canada and I worked at offices that were quite busy so I was able to see literally thousands of different patients and thousands of different problems that people presented with and gained a lifetime of experience over a couple of years before I started my own practice.
When you come in to the office you'll see that it's really a community environment and we've set it up that way and we've made it so that it's an open space where people can do these different exercises before their adjustment and after their adjustment.
We offer a very gentle effective technique based on getting motion within the spine. It works in conjunction with all the other aspects of the rehabilitation that we offer through the office.
So when people come in we have a detailed wellness program for them that focuses on exercises before and after the adjustment as well as different aspects of nutrition that literally revitalizes our patients.
What I focus on is being able to release interferences creating pressure at different areas of the body and ultimately your body is going to heal itself.
Because what controls the healing is how your nerves are going to feed and heal different areas of your body. And so when we take pressure off, your body is going to heal, it's that simple.
