Aoi Matsuri: Saiō-Dai Lady Arriving at Kamigamo Shrine.
Today the annual Aoi Matsuri (葵祭) was held here in Kyoto, the old heir capital of Japan. The Saiō-Dai Lady (斎王代) and her entourage is seen here entering the Kamigamo shrine (上賀茂神社) in Kyoto. This is the final destination of this exquisite matsuri and the end of a long day for the participants. This year the role of the Saiō-Dai Lady (斎王代) is presented by miss Shirai Yū Tasuku (白井 優佐). She is be dressed in the traditional style of the Heian court. Traditional Heian court dress for women would be wearing several layers of exquisitely coloured silk robes. The Saiō-Dai wears twelve layers of the traditional style robes (jūnihitoe).

9th October 2011 - while on holiday in Japan, I went to Minato ward in Tokyo to see the Tokyo Tower, and found a festival being run in the area to the east of the tower (this was the weekend that leads into the Health and Sports Day public holiday on the Monday).
As part of the celebrations, they had closed one side of Hibiya-Dori where it runs past the minato ward office building, which is the twin tower block you can see between the trees in the video, and a parade was being run along the northbound side of the road.
Strawberry picking in Munakata, Fukuoka
After washing the car, we got some gas and drove about an hour from Kitakyushu to the Fukuoka Berry Farm in Munakata. Spotted a cool Suzuki Cappuccino along the way! Got a ton of strawberries with the kids and had a great time. One cool thing that is different from back home is the fields are inside of vinyl enclosures, so that even if it is raining or otherwise miserable outside, you can still come inside to pick strawberries. In America, you are exposed to the elements. At least with my experience as a kid in Northern California it was all outdoor fields. Never in the States have I seen an enclosure like they run in Japan.
Also, those strawberries at the end were the nastiest strawberries I have ever tasted in my life.

Martial arts mostly originated on the island of Okinawa.
In its current form, karate is less than 200 years old.
Its early form was heavily influenced by ancient Chinese martial arts, such as kung fu.
Before starting the history of Karate-Do, we are going to introduced with the island of Okinawa.
Okinawa is sandwiched between mainland Japan and the continent of Asia.
It is made up of a number of islands scattered around the southeastern part of Japan.
Okinawa consists of 160 islands of various size scattered across a vast area of ocean.
The discovery of human bone has confirmed that humans have lived on Okinawa for many thousands of years.
Some suggest that China is their origin while others speculate that their origin is Indonesia or Australia.
Minatogawa people have lived in Okinawa 22,000 years ago.
They traded with China and embraced the rich culture from that continent.
In the Gusuku era, in the 13th century, conflict erupted among regional chiefs.
In 1429, the Ryukyu Kingdom was established.
It actively conducted trades with Japan and China as well as other nearby countries.
In order to entertain the envoys of the Chinese emperor the king of Ryukyu changed its performing arts, crafts, and food.
Life was centered on hunting and fishing.
Later on life started to revolve around farming.
The population grew rapidly during this era.
This period of history for Okinawa is known as the Golden Age Of Trading.
However, the invasion of Satsuma began in 1591.
The Ryukyu Kingdom was placed under the control of Satsuma in 1606.
But in 1875 Ryukyu Kingdom was abolished and Okinawa was established.
After the establishment of Okinawa the Japanese central government appointed the first governor in 1879.
Okinawa underwent modernization during that period.
World War II broke out in the Pacific in 1941.
Okinawa was the tragic scene of the only ground battle in Japan.
A fierce ground battle unfolded during World War II that involved the general population.
This battle caused to death one-fourth of the island’s population.
In 1945, Okinawa was placed under US administration for 27 years.
Okinawa went through a heavy influence from the United States.
US has its influential naval base in Okinawa since then.
Later on Okinawa reverted to Japanese control in 1972.
With its warm weather and unique culture, the island is rapidly growing its popularity as a tourist destination from mainland Japan and abroad.
Crystal blue seas, white sand beaches and colorful marine life attract vacationers.
Today, Okinawa places a particular emphasis on tourism.
Okinawa still preserves its traditional entertainment, many dances expressing different emotions and feelings.

Spring has arrived early in the Eastern Japanese town of Kawazu. The small town, located just outside of Tokyo, is famous for their 8000 cherry blossom trees that bloom early every year. The lush landscapes that greet millions of visitors each February are supremely romantic.
