On the hill overlooking the historical area of Kurashiki city is Achi Shrine, which dates back to the time of the legendary Emperor Ojin. In 1990 the shrine celebrated its 1700th anniversary. In other words, it’s ancient and the origins lost in the mists of time.
The shrine’s origins lay with the Achi clan who settled in the area and were immigrants from the continent. The main deities worshipped are the Munekata Sisters, who were the daughters of Susanoo and had strong links with Kyushu. Perhaps the Achi clan adopted them while stopping off on their migration from Korea along the Inland Sea.
Among the interesting features in the shrine’s grounds is an iwasaka group of sacred rocks. These are supposed to be the origins of the shrine, and speak of Korean shamanistic roots. The shrine pamphlet ascribes them a yin~yang presence and suggests they speak to the Chinese legendary paradise of Horai.
Elsewhere there’s an unusual mikuji (fortune slip) arrangement centred around a mokkoku tree and split into the twelve Chinese zodiac signs. A notice board says the tree is the longest-living in the shrine grounds and associated with making good relationships. You thereby get good luck plus Chinese zodiac fortune.
from the hill are god views over Kurashiki – the reason of course the site was chosen in the first place. One of the words for shrine is miya, the same word used formerly for palaces and the residences of august princes. Perhaps here on the hill was once the palace of an Achi leader, made into a shrine after his death to honor his memory.

The first of the year I was lucky to experience a very rare ceremony called Junihitoe or the twelve layers robe in Achi-jinja in Kurashiki. The ceremony is quite slow and beautiful to the eyes of everyone.

Our travel continues to KURASHIKI a famous gem, stunningly beautiful city in Okayama prefecture that is the neighbor of Hiroshima prefecture. It is said that their Merchants Quarter is the most beautiful in whole Japan, with buildings from Edo Era (1603-1867) preserved till today and a lovely inner canal lined up with willow trees and Sakura Cherry Blossom and patrolled by a Swan and kept clean by fishes. Let's discover it little by little on a stunning spring warm sunny day in bloom.
Kurashiki is a city on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. It’s known for the centuries-old buildings and shops of the Bikan Historical Quarter. The city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name Kurashiki can be roughly translated as town of storehouses in reference to the rice storehouses.
Many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been converted into museums, boutiques and cafes. The Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki's museums, exhibiting a large collection of works by famous Western artists. The canal area is a ten minute walk from Kurashiki Station.
The Ohara Museum of Art has works by European masters such as El Greco and Monet. Nearby, Japan Rural Toy Museum displays toys from the 1600s to the 1980s. The Archaeological Museum has artifacts from the region’s ancient cultures. Boats cruise the district’s narrow central canal.

Gokusui no En ( Winding Stream Festival ) ( Hiraizumi Town )
An elegant poetry contest from the Heian period ( from about the 8th to the 12th century ) is reenacted in this festival at the Pure Land Garden of Motsuji, held on the 4th Sunday of May. Following the opening and announcement of the poetry topic, the Young Woman Dance ( Jakujo ) of the Ennen no Mai longevity rites is performed. Sitting by the feeder stream for the temple garden's pond, participants clad in Heian-style costumes compose poetry before a floating cup of sake reaches them, after which they take a sip from the cup. During the contest, there are elegant entertainments such as a traditional musical performance on a boat. Finally, the master of ceremonies reads the poems aloud, and this graceful event comes to a close. Like the floating sake cups, time seems to flow slowly and gracefully in this festival.
Adeyto ????️ Kurashiki OHARA Art MUSEUM Edo Era ???? OKAYAMA ????️ Huawei P20 PRO
Ohara Cotton producers and merchants became very rich in Kurashiki and could afford to purchase an amazing collection of Western Art and then dedicate museums to it. We will not have time to enter the museum because they don't allow filming inside and on top of it, it closes at 5pm and at that time EVERYTHING ELSE is also shutting down in this rich resort town city center, but at least we will get the feel of it from what the architecture and gardens have to say!
Here their official info: In 1930, to commemorate Kojima Torajiro, a Western-style painter who died the previous year, Kurashiki entrepreneur, Ohara Magosaburo, founded the Ohara Museum of Art. This private museum, featuring Western art, is the oldest in Japan.
Magosaburo, well-known as a collector of Japanese art, highly respected Torajiro’s talent and his humble attitude towards art, and sent Torajiro to Europe three times. Torajiro studied art in Europe and, at the same time, with Magosaburo’s superb European artwork, choosing pieces through the sense of beauty that he possessed as a Japanese artist.
Torajiro, who had a spirit typical of Meiji Era, felt there was a struggle between the highlights of Western art and his Japanese aesthetic sense, when he carefully chose artwork. He prudently chose masterpieces by El Greco, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse and other artists and brought them to Kurashiki, which are now the main features of the Ohara Museum of Art. His collection of Chinese and Egyptian art reveals the conflict of beauty between Western and Oriental art that he faced, where he tried to seek the essence of art.
The Ohara Museum of Art plays an active role in Kurashiki, expanding the collection to include both modern and contemporary art from the West and Japan, as well as pieces by artists who served Mingei Movement (Japanese Folk Art Movement). Now the museum is well known to the world as a private museum with its own character, reflecting Japanese culture.
The Ohara Museum of Art, in addition to opening the eyes of children and adults on site, spends time and energy on distance learning programs through the information communication technology (IT). As an art museum that will actively live through the 21st century, it also serves for broad activities cultivating the frontier of art. Art Lectures are held every summer, and Gallery Concerts, inviting world-class musicians, are part of its activities.

Junihitoe Kimono - The Dressing Process
The Junihitoe is a 12-Layered ceremonial kimono from the Heian era! It is very heavy, and SUPER expensive. One Japanese person told me that each layer can cost up to about $10K, so, 12 layers adds up fast! This type of kimono used to be worn by noble women, high class society and royalty in the Heian era for special occasions. It is rare for them to be used anymore, but occasionally they are still worn for special occasions by people of noble blood or the ruling class.
If you'd like to see what it's like to walk in one, check out the video of us exiting the stage after modeling at a culture event!
I am so privileged to be able to wear one once! I feel so honored! The occasion for this honor is that they needed volunteers to model these kimonos for the J-Culture Fest being held in Tokyo. I jumped at the opportunity! Not many Japanese people get to wear these kimonos, much less foreigners like me! I have heard that the experience is so rare that there is a business in Kyoto that charges upwards of about $2,000 just to have the experience of wearing one for a while and getting some professional photos taken with it. I'm thrilled that I didn't have to pay that much. I am not sure that this opportunity will ever come again, so I will treasure this experience!
