Achyutaraya Temple - Hampi.
Believed to have been built during King Achyuta Deva Raya (1530-1542) by an officer Salakaraju Tirumaladeva, this temple, though not as large or beautiful as Vitthala Temple, is still a beautiful and sizeable monument. Though dedicated to Thiruvengalanatha or Lord Venkateshwara, the temple is known by the King under whose reign it was built.
Unlike the other temple complexes, this temple complex has two enclosures, each marked by an entrance Gopura. The main temple is situated within the second enclosure. Opposite to the temple is the shrine for Garuda, the celestial bird and the vehicle of Vishnu. To the south west of the temple is a shrine for Devi. Running around the inner courtyard is the pillared cloister. The Kalyana Mantapa is located in the northwestern corner of the outer enclosure. Like all major temple complexes, this temple complex was also provided with a Kalyana Mantapa where the annual marriage ceremony of the deity was conducted. The slender pillars of this Mantapa bear dexterously carved bas relief. The basement of the Kalyana Mantapa is richly decorated with the relief of elephants.
The main deity in the temple is missing and the Garbha Griha (sanctum) of the temple is standing on pillars put in place in the recent past by Archaeology Department to support the dilapidated structure from further deterioration. Very typical of the Vijayanagara Architecture, the temple and the Kalyana Mantapa pillars pose as if being supported by mythical Yalis. The temple pillars also have carvings of tales and episodes from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Like Virupaksha Temple and Vitthala Temple, Achyuta Raya Temple also has a bazaar starting right at the doorstep of the temple all the way to the Varaha Temple on the northern end. This street is known as Courtesan Street and it is believed that this street was once a very flourishing centre of trade.
How to reach there: Achyuta Raya Temple can be reached either from Kodanda Rama Temple through the Courtesan Street or by crossing the Matanga Hill using the steps beside the Monolithic Nandi (Bull) statue at the opposite end of the Virupaksha Bazaar.
Hampi Utsav 2020 | Achyutaraya temple, Matanga Hill and Hampi bazar
In this 8th episode, we explore popular places to visit in Hampi, Achyutaraya Temple, Underground Shiva temple, Monolithic Bull and also foothills of Matanga Hill.
Achyutaraya Temple:
Achyutaraya Temple is one of the important places to visit in Hampi and is a major attraction in Hampi tourism.
Built during 1534 AD by Achyuta Deva Raya (Younger brother of Krishna Deva Raya) devoted to Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Vishnu.
Achyutaraya Temple is an example of Vijayanagara style temple architecture in its most advanced form than any other temples in Hampi. This was one of the last grand temple projects executed in the capital, before the fall of the empire.
Achyutaraya Temple is in ruins as a consequence of the attacks by the monarchs of the Bahamani kingdom and by the forces of nature over several centuries.
At the northwest corner of the outer compound, Kalyana Mandapa (marriage hall for the annual wedding ceremony of the God and the Goddess)
Underground Shiva Temple:
Also known as the Prasanna Virupaksha temple, this structure dates back to the 14th century AD.
This temple dedicated to Lord Siva was built many meters below the ground level.
The roof of the temple is at par with the present ground level while the main structure of the temple stands on a low lying area.
Almost all the time the inner sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas.
The temple has remained buried for over four hundred years before it was discovered in the 1980’s decade. It is believed that this is one of the oldest temples in Hampi.
Monolithic Bull:
Carved out of a single gigantic boulder, it is also known locally as Yeduru Basavanna. Located at the east end of the Virupaksha Bazaar or Hampi Bazar

ACHYUTARAYA TEMPLE HAMPI
Achyuta Raya Temple in Hampi dates back to the 16th century. This grand temple is a superb example of the Vijayanagara style of temple architecture in its most advanced form – illustrating this far more than any other temple in Hampi. Achyuta Raya Temple was one of the last flamboyant temple projects executed in the historic city before the fall of the Vijaynagara Empire.
Music pillars of Hampi – Travel Karnataka
Hampi is purely magical. My four day trip to Hampi was amazing, four days are not enough to explore it's beauty, they say there are several numbers of Musical pillars in Hampi, the main ones are in the Vitthala temple complex. The guide shown me few of them, then I started discovering more Musical pillars by myself. I spent almost a day finding pillars that produce music. This pillar is from the Achyutaraya Temple complex, I found this particular pillar produce best tonal variations.
**This video was featured in Ancient Aliens show on History Channel**
Update:
*This is not Alien technology*
According to 'Shilpa Rathna Ajithagamana' – a Kannada language literature of Vijayanagara period, these pillars are made by Casting method.
1. Rocks were melted into liquid form.
2. Sand and other minerals were mixed into the molten rock.
3. Molten rock poured into the shape of the pillars, then cut and carved carefully.
4. These pillars were installed meticulously in presence of musicians during night, in absolute silence.
these pillars are mainly categorized into two different types:
1. 'Sthri Shile' which resonates like Veena and other string instruments.
2. 'Poon Shile' resonates like percussion instruments such as Tabala, Mrudanga etc.
The book also mentioned how Rangamantapa at Vijaya Vittala Temple, Viroopaksha temple and various other temples were built. Definitely not aliens, but epic craftsmanship of ancient Hindus.

Virupaksha Temple and wall paintings | Glimpse of Hampi Bazar | Hampi Tourism E2 | Hampi Temple
All about Virupaksha temple of Hampi, quick look into unique wall paintings, Hampi Bazar, short glimpse of Vijayanagara dynasty history and what not to miss when your are in Hampi.
In this 2nd episode of Hampi roadtrip we explore the famous Virupaksha Temple of Hampi and the Hampi Bazar.
Located on the south bank of the river Tungabhadra, Virupaksha temple of Hampi is one of the oldest functioning temples in India where worship is being performed ever since its inception in the 7th century AD.
Temple is noted for its architecture and has been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Temple is also known as Pampapati Temple and it is constructed in Dravidian architecture style.
Vijayanagara rulers were responsible for building this preexisted small shrine of Virupaksha & Pampa into a large temple complex.
Once you enter the temple complex, the little naughty elephant Laxmi welcomes you with her blessings.
The central pillared hall is the most ornate structure. Known as the Ranga Mandapa this pillared hall was added to the temple complex in 1510 AD by Krishadeva Raya.
This hall with 38 pillars is used for temple rituals including the marriage ceremonies. The mural panel on the central portion of the hall is one of the few remains of this form of Vijayanagara art. Most of it is based on godly themes.
The most important of the sub shrines is that of Goddess Pampa and Bhuvaneswari, consorts of Lord Shiva, towards the north of the main shrine. These shrines are in fact much older than the rest of the grandiose structures in the compound.
Located in font of the Virupaksha temple, The chariot street is popularly known as Hampi Bazaar.
Both sides of the street are lined with a series of old pavilions, some of them are two storied. These structures were once part of a thriving market and residence of the nobles.
Legend says this was the street where Gold, diamond, jewels and other expensive items used to be sold openly like how vegetables are sold at present.

WEAR GOOD SHOES - EXPLORE HAMPI | MONKEY TEMPLE INDIA
VLOG #007 | Its my last day in Hampi.
I will go to the elephant and monkey temple, places I didn’t explore the first day. Remember to trek in good shoes not in rubber swim shoes. My feet ended in a bloody mess.
I walked off the day with a 575-step up to see a magical sunset overlooking the sweet village of Hampi… Still wearing those rubbish shoes.

Pushkarni Achyutaraya Temple
The Achyutaraya temple, also called the Tiruvengalanatha temple, is about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) east of Virupaksha temple and a part of its sacred centre is close to the Tungabhadra River. It is referred to be in Achyutapura in inscriptions and is dated to 1534 CE. It is one of the four largest complexes in Hampi. The temple is unusual because it faced north. It is dedicated to Vishnu.
In Vijayanagara times, the temple was traditionally approached from the river, first past a ceremonial tank then along the market street with a broad road. The temple had an outer gopuram leading into a courtyard with a 100-column hall and an inner gopuram leading to the Vishnu temple.
On each side of each pillar in the 100-column hall are reliefs of avatars of Vishnu; other deities such as Shiva, Surya, Durga; scenes of daily life—rishi, amorous couples, jokers; people in yoga asanas; people in namaste poses; and Vijayanagara emblems.
The temple gateway shows the Vijayanagara dynastic emblems; a boar from Varaha, a sword, the sun and the moon. The temple and the market street are ruined but their layout suggests it was a major market with streets provided for chariot traffic.
Achyuta Temple complex in Hampi
Achyuta Raya Temple is one of the magnificent and major temples of Hampi. Built in 1534 AD, this temple stands as an exemplary example of Vijayanagara style of architecture. The temple is located between the Gandhamadana and Matanga hills. It is one of the last grand creations of the Vijayanagara dynasty before the fall of the great empire.
The Achyuta Raya temple was built during the reign of Achyuta Deva Raya (1529-1542), one of the kings of the Vijayanagara Empire. He was the younger brother of Krishna Deva Raya, whom he succeeded in 1529. The temple was built by a high officer in the court of King Achyuta Deva Raya.
The beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Lord Vishnu. Hence, the temple was originally named as Tiruvengalanatha Temple. However, gradually the temple came to be known after the king in whose period it was built. So, it became well known as the Achyuta Raya temple rather than the Tiruvengalanatha temple.
