Active Lapland

This wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous night but it was still a nice active aurora. This timelapse is made up of mainly 2.5s exposures on a Canon EOS550D at ISO1600 with a 16mm, f/2.8 lens.

A very active display of the Northern Lights seen from Kiruna in northern Sweden. I was guiding the Explorers Astronomy Tours (astronomytours.co.uk/) trip and we were very lucky to see an aurora of this beauty. Chad Blakley, who lives up here, says that this was one of the best displays for years. His timelapses (lightsoverlapland.com/) are far better than mine but I was very happy with this. The frames are taken with an EOS 550D and a Russian 16mm, f/2.8 lens. Most of the exposures are around 3s at ISO 1600 but I should have gone shorter, particularly for the corona.

Northern Lights - Kiruna

The elusive northern lights. Everyday life for some, a distant dream for others.

Since the first time I witnessed the northern lights I've been somewhat obsessed about capturing it on camera. After my move to the south of Sweden it's been harder to do that. To be able to see the green dance so far south it needs to be a really strong display of northern lights. The lack of northern lights in the south made me to book a trip to Kiruna in hope of some action in the sky.

I spent a week in Kiruna but neither the weather nor the aurora activity were on my side. The forecast for Monday 8 February said it would be overcast all night long, but despite that I went out in hope of capturing some stars. The clouds showed up a lot later than the forecast had said and after just a short time out in the dark I saw how the green light started to dance on the sky above. The joy knew no boundaries and I just stood there, with my arms up in the air, enjoying the show. No matter how many times I will see the northern lights - it will always be a special and magical moment!

Real time pulsating northern lights above Kiruna, Sweden

This video shows a rare display of rapidly pulsating aurora which appeared after an incredibly intense sub storm. We filmed this clip back in February 2017 in Kiruna, Sweden.

These pulsating aurorae aren't as bright as the ribbons you'd normally see but it is nonetheless a fascinating sight that you do not see so often.

This video was filmed in real time and in full HD with a Sony A7s. The video footage is unedited and resembles what you would see with the naked eye. The ambient audio has been replaced with music, as it was very windy that night.

Kiruna Landing - A Snowy Approach to ESNQ

Another short 16 minute flying video from me, this time attempting a low visibility landing into the small airport of Kiruna in northern Sweden. This flight was flown online with VATSIM, using the PMDG 737NGX in Norwegian livery, operating NorShuttle 4063, a one hour thirty five minute flight service from Stockholm. Scenery is the ever popular Kiruna Airport package from Orbx Simulations, this in FSX-SE. The weather is live and is provided by Active Sky 2016 with Cloud Art and REX Enhanced. Music in the video is Royalty free and used with kind permission and courtesy of fesliyanstudios.com. The landing was in snowy conditions and low light and even though the winds were light, it was a struggle to maintain a stable approach. In the end, I landed slightly to the right of the centreline. I must do better! The latter part of the video shows you something of the wonderful scenery and moving people and features to be found in the work of Orbx Simulations.
