XP Grind ICELAND 2017 - Dettifoss & Mývatn
Day 5 of our 10 days Iceland tour.
Spending the previous night in the whirlpool of the awesome camground of Á Hreindýraslóðum, we were eager to experience the Dettifoss NP and its waterfall, which is said to be the most powerfull in Europe. Having stood beside it definitely proves this statement, rendering every spectator to freeze on the sight of this immense waterfall. Some kilometers north, following the gravel road through Dettifoss NP, Asbygri Canyon offered a most pleasant picnic site surrounded by the horseshoe shaped cliffs of the canyon. Although we skipped the Húsavík Whale Museum, the tiny village with its harbour radiates a certain flair of calmity. Accidentally stumbling across the Blue Lake in Mývatn offered great opportunities to caputre some dramatic footage and inhale delicious sulfur vapour without limits, before commencing to Námaskard, where these habits could just be continued at will. Despite the stunning landscape, the odour pushed us onwards to the Grótjagá Cave, famous for being the location of a love scene in Game of Thrones. While the cave could not quite meet our expectations (it is beautiful anyway), a not so distant crater caught our attention. Following the (gravel) road carefully, we could spot the turn off to get to the foot of Hverfjall, a tuff ring volcano accessible by foot, which was a unexpectedly frolicking way to call it a day. Suitable for such a day, the Lifsmótun campsite offered a cosy stay in a wind-protected area with free hot showers and a small kitchen.

Myvatn lake : north Iceland ( famous lake of fies ) - Drone Iceland
One of the main attractions of the north is famous lake Myvatn, located at a distance of about 55 kilometers south of the town of Husavik. It is also the fourth largest lake in Iceland, a place that you must see.
Its name (isl. my - the mosquito or fly + Vatn - lake) means lake flies which almost perfectly reflects the character of this place. Ubiquitous near the lake insects can drive a man to despair. If you're going to admire these beautiful lands you must obtain a special protective nets worn over the head. It can be purchased on nearby petrol stations.
The lake was created about 35,000 years ago, it covers its surface area thirty-seven kilometers square. The average depth of the lake is 2.5 meters and the deepest point reaches up to four and a half meters. The water in the lake is rich in minerals and algae, which means that it takes blue-green hues. The transparency of the water allows you to see the rich vegetation and fish among the seaweed. Surface of a lake is filled with dozens of small islands and the coast grow pseudo-craters called Skútustaðagígar formed during the explosion gases. In 1974. The area around the lake has been strictly protected, and these pseudo-craters were considered monuments.
Interestingly is that, the water in the lake never freezes completely, despite the fact that it is located just 100 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. This is due to the nearby active volcanoes, geothermal and lava fields.
Myvatn is an ideal place for bird watching, Shores of the lake is home to many species of waterfowl. In summer you can meetings largest population of ducks, more than 16 different species, whose numbers even exceeds 150,000 individuals. In addition to ducks you can meet geese, białozory, whooper swans, curlews, snipe, golden plover and białorzytki and 76 other species that are turning out to be spot on. While migratory birds are represented here by nearly 240 different species. In winter you can see the whooper swans (Cygnus Cygnus)
From May 20 to July 20 on part of the land within the lake entry is prohibited, due to the breeding season of birds.

Orkugangan 60 km Ski Race from Myvatn to Husavik, Iceland.
Orkugangan is a 60 km long cross country ski race from Krafla in the Mývatn area to the town of Húsavík by Skjálfandi bay.
Orkugangan is the longest ski race in Iceland and a point earning part of the Iceland race series Íslandsgangan. The trail is groomed and tracked.
The race derives its name from the abundant natural energy in this region. It runs through the active rift zone of Northeast Iceland where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are separating. The terrain along the trail is mostly untouched wilderness with volcanic landscape; mountain ranges, fissures, hot springs and vast open lava fields, some thousands of years old and others barely 30 years old, with variously shaped lava sculptures. Geothermal energy is abundant in the earth below and in some places its force is visible above the surface.
The view from the trail is incomparable, offering a changing variety of scenic delights as you make your way from Mount Leirhnjúkur in Krafla caldera, trekking across the resent lava past Þeistareykir geothermal area and overlooking Skjálfandi bay and the mountains across it on your final descend to the coastal village of Húsavík.

Started our third day in Iceland at HAMRAR Campsite, a short drive from downtown Akureyri where we first made it into the city and spent an hour at multiple fuel stations looking for a windshield wiper replacement for our van since one of them flew off in a snowstorm on our way into Akureyri the night before which we couldn’t locate on the road afterwards, but ended up getting directed to the “BIG HOUSE” (Dealership I guess ????) by the local service shops after gas stations didn’t have the right type. Campeasy offered to reimburse us although I’m sure these sort of charges are up to their discretion... then went into the city and stopped by a camera shop to possibly pick up a ND filter for our camera, and went into 66 degrees north to scope that out, as it was the first of many we’d seen throughout the vacation.
Grabbed a coffee and took some video of the city and the church atop the hill, before grabbing a quick sub and hitting the ring road on the way to Goðafoss, the drive to many places is crazy with how quick the landscape changes from green grass and lava rock to snow in the snap of a finger. Then a short drive over the mountain pass to Lake Mývatn, Hverarönd sulfur springs (geothermal spot notes for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas), Grjótagjá Cave where some game of thrones was shot, finally making our way into Húsavík through nothing but snow covered mountains on the way up, once we got there, made a quick stop at Vínbúðin liquor store for some Viking beer and headed to GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths, arriving around 4, 4:30ish at least an hour and a half before sunset. Although I didn’t have the camera out, we got to see the northern lights dancing above the pools and mountains after dark!
Awesome experience. ✅ geosea.is ✅

for your trip, this video is not sponsored/paid in any way, we just had an amazing experience with their van, service and ultimately our entire trip with it! They provide you with a tablet for your navigation, useful info such as points of interest, weather, messaging to CampEasy for any troubleshooting as well as being your personal hotspot which allowed us to be active through text and social media our entire stay not worrying about extra cost with our carrier or need for a local SIM card during our rental with the van. We often carried the tablet with us into cafe’s etc so we would have WiFi even away from the vehicle. ????????

Flying around Lake Mývatn in Iceland
Part-7 Ingólfshöfði Puffin island
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters). The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for Brown Trout and Atlantic Salmon.
The name of the lake (Icelandic mý = midge, vatn = lake; the lake of midges) comes from the huge numbers of flies (midges) to be found there in the summer.
The name Mývatn is sometimes used not only for the lake but the whole surrounding inhabited area. The River Laxá, Lake Mývatn and the surrounding wetlands are protected as a nature reserve (The Mývatn-Laxá Nature Conservation Area).

Finally! Abam gigihkan diri mengEdit video ring road adventure in Iceland ini. The greatest trip so far. I can confirm, it was awesome. Especially when driving past blue icebergs, active volcanoes, roaring waterfalls and northern lights.
SubhanAllah. Allahuakhbar.
Freaking cold nights, unpredictable weather, wet feet, the 'Initial D' scene on black ice road, the '8km walk in blizzard', the 'every day kruk-kruk empty stomach and the sleepless nights-casing northern lights. I could only have prepared myself mentally for such things.

Northern Iceland: THE WORLD AT THE END OF THE WORLD
NORTH ICELAND
The World at the End of the World (pt. 1)
00:45 Jökulsárgljúfur is a colossal canyon created by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
The river rises beneath the Vatnajökull icecap and enters the sea at Öxarfjörður bay. From its source the river flows across a high plateau dotted with isolated palagonite peaks and scarred with lava flows. At the edge of the highlands the land drops and the river becomes more turbulent and forms several huge waterfalls, tumbling into the canyon which bears its name. The most impressive of them are Selfoss, Dettifoss (01:52), and Hafragilsfoss (09:24).
The Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is one of the largest and most impressive river canyon in Iceland. It is 25 km long, ½ km wide and in many places more than 100 metres deep. Jökulsárgljúfur is located in the palagonite belt of northern Iceland, in one of the most volcanically active areas in the country.
10:39 Ásbyrgi canyon is a huge horseshoe-shaped depression (3.5 km in length and 1.1 km across). For more than half of its length, the canyon is divided through the middle by a distinctive rock formation 25 meters high called Eyjan (the Island). The canyon's steep sides are formed by cliffs up to 100 metres in height. In the canyon there's a vast woodland of birch and willow.
Nicknamed Sleipnir's footprint, it is said that the canyon was formed when Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, touched one of its feet to the ground here. Legend also relates that the canyon is the capital city of the hidden people (huldufólk), who live in cracks within the surrounding cliffs.
12:05 Skjálfandi is a vast bay located in the north-eastern part of Iceland. The Icelandic word Skjálfandi literally translates as trembling, refering to earthquakes in the area.
The bay, originally created by glacial activity, has two major streams flowing into it: Skjálfandafljót, which is a glacier river, and Laxá, which is a freshwater river.
The only town in Skjálfandi Bay is Húsavík, facing the snow-covered Víknafjöll and Kinnarfjöll mountain ranges on the other side of the bay. The highest point reaches around 1200 metres.
The bay is known for its many different whale, dolphins and bird species.
The Swede Garðar Svavarsson was one the first Scandinavian to settle in Iceland around 860. He built a house in Skjálfandi, but spent only the following winter months there before leaving Iceland.
